Everyone within Wanzhu knew that He Jianshan was someone who kept his word. Once he had his mind set on something, it was very hard to change it. Usually, Assistant Lin was the only one who could convince him otherwise. However, over the past couple of days, they came to realize that even he had been driven out. Within a week, Zhao Xiaoxiao was transferred to the twelfth floor as Lin Hui’s secretary. She moved into Lin Hui’s original office. Meanwhile, Lin Hui finally moved into an office of his own. He Jianshan had furnished the room next door with office furniture and given it to him.

He Jianshan’s actions confused everyone. When they had just moved into this new office building a few years ago, the administrative department had proposed a separate office for Lin Hui. However, both of them had declined. They said that it would be more convenient for them if they worked out of the same office. Just when everyone thought that the two of them would be together to the end, He Jianshan suddenly started transferring people around. It was hard not to overthink it. Even An Ni seemed to be tiptoeing around Lin Hui. It made him incredibly irritable.

Lin Hui and He Jianshan fell into a delicate sort of balance. It was as if nothing had happened. They clocked in as usual, clocked out as usual, discussed business as usual. Yet, at the same time, it seemed as though something had shifted. Lin Hui’s attitude was far too dull. Now, apart from discussing work, he hardly said a word to He Jianshan. He would avoid his gaze, and he would return to his new office as soon as they were done speaking.

Compared to his indifference towards He Jianshan, Lin Hui’s attitude towards Zhao Xiaoxiao was like a spring breeze. Whenever he handed work over to Zhao Xiaoxiao, he always did so with a warm smile and a gentle voice. Whenever he was offering pointers, he would make sure to give her a few words of encouragement. Towards Zhao Xiaoxiao, he was unbelievably patient. Within two days, Lin Hui had completely conquered Zhao Xiaoxiao. She would tell anyone who’d listen about how amazing he was. Almost overnight, Lin Hui seemed to have learned how to switch between faces. He could seamlessly switch from one face to another.

Lin Hui thought that, after working at this company for so many years, he would have acquired the ability to remain calm. However, it seemed that he was actually a very childish person.

Lin Hui stood by the window and looked out at the city. The view from this office was pretty similar to that of He Jianshan’s. However, they were now separated by two walls. It was like two different worlds. He turned his head to look at the phone on his desk. There was a post-it note stuck to the upper right hand corner of the landline. It had three numbers written on it, 822. This was his intercom number. From the day he entered Wanzhu, he’d been assigned this number, and it had been with him until now. This phone rang frequently. People often came looking for him. However, He Jianshan was rarely among them. Back when they were still at the old office building, He Jianshan would call on him to discuss work whenever he walked by him. Once they moved into the new office building, the two of them shared an office. Even though there was a door between them, He Jianshan would often call out to him, “Lin Hui!”

Lin Hui often thought that it would be nice to continue on like that.

However, even a trivial wish such as this was difficult to achieve.

Lin Hui had always thought that he understood He Jianshan. They had a lot of rapport when it came to a lot of things, especially when it came to work. However, He Jianshan clearly saw his opposition, but he still went ahead with his decision without even communicating with him. It made him feel very aggrieved. It was rather laughable. Many people had commented in front of him about the favoritism that the company’s highest authority had for him. He was the only one who refused to believe it. A false hope could also be hurtful. He hid his feelings away at the bottom of his heart so that they wouldn’t drag him down.

He had been lost in thought. He was startled back into reality when Li Fenghai burst through the door. Li Fenghai just so happened to have returned with business matters. He hadn’t expected to run into such a big piece of gossip. After finishing up his work, he excitedly rushed over to check out Lin Hui’s new office. As he looked around the room, he nudged the other with his elbow and teased, “Everyone’s been saying that you’ve fallen out of favor. However, it doesn’t really look like that to me.”

Lin Hui was incredibly dumbfounded. “What is he, the emperor? You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“Who can you blame but Old Pan? He had a little too much to drink that one year. Remember what he said? ‘Assistant Lin, you’re second only to one.’ Hahahahaha!”

Lin Hui poured a cup of tea for Li Fenghai. Li Fenghai accepted it. Then, he continued speaking, “Although, I don’t really understand. An Ni said that the girl is your secretary, so why’s she over there? Is she your secretary or the boss’ secretary?”

In terms of location, Zhao Xiaoxiao could be considered to be positioned in the middle between Lin Hui and He Jianshan. However, her office was a side room. Forget Li Fenghai. Even Lin Hui himself felt baffled by He Jianshan’s actions. Now that it was mentioned, he was starting to get annoyed again. He couldn’t help but pour himself a glass of water and take a sip. “She’s my secretary. I’ve been training her for the past couple of days. Once she gets more familiar with the work, I’ll be stepping back for a lot of things. I’m just too busy.”

That being said, Lin Hui still couldn’t help but feel a little sour about handing some of the work that he had been accustomed to doing over to Zhao Xiaoxiao. A hidden crush was really far too bitter, so much so that tidying up his crush’s desk felt as sweet as candy. However, this candy was now gone.

In fact, He Jianshan himself had been the one to confiscate it.

“Stop joking. An Ni and the others might not understand. All of them think that the two of you are fighting, but I think you might actually be promoted soon,” Li Fenghai joked.

Lin Hui didn’t say a word.

“Right now, your position is ranked a little bit lower than Sun Qing. Hmm… President He is probably going to promote you…”

After noticing Lin Hui’s unenthusiastic appearance, Li Fenghai laughed. “Come on, you’re getting promoted. Why don’t you seem happy about it? Do you really plan on being an assistant for the rest of your life?”

Lin Hui thought to himself, “Yes, I want to be an assistant for the rest of my life.”

If Li Fenghai knew what he was thinking, his first reaction would be to make fun of him for being a “good-for-nothing”. Lin Hui, however, was an ordinary person from a small town. He didn’t really have any ambitions. He only worked as hard as he did so that he would be able to stand by He Jianshan.

“Besides, it’s not like anything’s set in stone. Maybe he’s gotten tired of seeing me. Maybe he finds me annoying.” Lin Hui poked fun at himself.

Li Fenghai laughed when he heard this. He was about to say something when his expression suddenly changed. He quickly stood up straight. “President He…”

Lin Hui turned his head. As expected, He Jianshan was standing at the door. Lin Hui wasn’t sure how much he had heard.

Lin Hui didn’t care anymore, so he abandoned himself to the situation. He brazenly took the initiative to ask, “President He, are you looking for me?”

He Jianshan nodded. “Come here. I have something to tell you.”

Lin Hui gestured to Li Fenghai. Then, he followed He Jianshan to his office.

As soon as he walked in the door, He Jianshan said, “Next Tuesday, you’ll be going on a business trip with me to Changning. It’ll probably take two or three days.”

Lin Hui was stunned for a moment. “Is it just the two of us?”

“Mn. President Feng from Ruitao has invited me to meet up.”

Lin Hui didn’t know what this meetup would entail. “Have you had someone book the tickets yet? Actually, you could’ve just told Xiaoxiao let me know.”

He Jianshan paused for a moment. “Lin Hui, my assistant is you.”

As if afraid Lin Hui hadn’t heard him, He Jianshan repeated, “Only you.”

While he was saying this, he looked solemnly at Lin Hui. Surprisingly, Lin Hui didn’t avoid his gaze. The two of them were very close to each other. Lin Hui could almost see himself standing foolishly within the other’s deep eyes.

No one spoke for a while. The air was rather quiet.

In the end, Lin Hui was the one to retreat. He took a step back and imperceptibly shifted his gaze. He figured that He Jianshan had probably heard what he’d just said to Li Fenghai. Thus, He Jianshan was now explaining himself to him.

All because of a private remark sparked by his resentment.

Lin Hui suddenly woke up.

He wasn’t in any position to demand for anything. Furthermore, he shouldn’t have been bringing his personal emotions into his work. This kind of behavior was highly unprofessional. Still, He Jianshan hadn’t even criticized him for it. Lin Hui felt a little pathetic.

He surrendered to the gentleness that He Jianshan occasionally revealed.

Lin Hui raised his head. He turned his gaze to He Jianshan once more. “Yes, I’m Wanzhu’s chief assistant.”
