The Darkness is Deep

The Adventure Lover’s backyard was piled high with items that couldn’t be displayed out front. The items were piled so high that even the slightest, accidental touch could cause an avalanche.

“Sorry about the air quality. Have a seat.”

Motioning towards a stool for me to sit on, Ijūin also sat on a similar, uneven stool.

“Chaos Saga is one of the so-called Dark Clans.”

“Dark Clan?”

“Yeah. You know about regular clans, right? Normally, a clan is a group of explorers who have applied for, and received, approval from the Association. If the clan is strong enough, the Association will give them commissions. In return, they get preferential treatment from the Association and Association-approved stores.”

“Hmm.”

“On the other hand, the Dark Clan is a group of explorers who are considered to be involved in criminal activities. If an Explorer is deemed to be a member of the Dark Clan, they’ll become unable to use the Association or Association-approved stores. Of course, they won’t even have access to dungeons through normal routes.”

“Is there a route other than the normal one to enter the dungeon?”

“Unfortunately, yes. One route is the unauthorized use of the app, ‘Let’s Go for An Adventure!’. The other is if you go to a dungeon that isn’t managed by the Association in the first place.”

“Is there such a dungeon?”

“Yes, two thirds of Japan’s land is forest. A dungeon built in the mountains can be hidden as much as the landowner wants to hide it.”

“I see.”

“Dungeons that are not controlled by the Association are called Dark Dungeons. Dark Dungeons and Dark Clans are a set. They are said to be the source of funds for criminal organizations.”

“So, the executive of the Dark Clan came to invite me.”

“A lot of people with chaos-type blessings are crazy. It’s easy for them to invite others.”

“That’s annoying.”

“Don’t take them up on their offer. You are still making more than enough money, so there’s no need for you to go to the dark side.”

“I know, I’m not that stupid. I’ve already identified him as an enemy in my mind. I’d rather crush him.”

“Hahaha! That’s a promising sentiment.”

Ijūin looked up exaggeratedly and laughed.

“Well, we’ll see. I’ll do whatever it takes. I’m gonna make him sorry for ever messing with me.”

“If you’re gonna do this, do it in the dungeon.”

“I know. I’m a law-abiding citizen. I’m a good citizen out there.”

“Well said.”

Ijūin took out a smouldering cigarette and started smoking. I guess he had nothing more to say.

“I’ll be working hard to raise funds for a while, so stay tuned. I’m going to be selling a lot of rare drops.”

“That would be nice, especially the cobalt. It’s a strategic commodity.”

“All right. In return, I want you to stock up on rare skill orbs.”

“I’ll take care of it.”

The stern shopkeeper, Ijūin, smiled wryly. I probably had the same look on my face.
