Chapter 79 - The Flow of Mana

"Um, but I have a question for you ....... Nobles are able to use magic and bestow it on their subordinates, right? To put them in the position of knights, of course."

 Yes.

My head was a bit foggy, but I'll be back soon.

I was naming people, but I'm sure the nobles do it too.

Whether they can use magic or not, the naming itself should be something that other people do as well.

Nobles can use their own magic.

And there should be a system in place to take people who have been active in battle, etc., as squires to be assigned to work under knights, and then promote them to knights if their actions are found to be problem-free and meritorious to the nobles they work for.

In that case, that person will be named as a knight and given the same magic that can be used by nobles.

If that's the case, there may be some room for extenuating circumstances in my actions.

"Of course, the nobles are able to name and give magic. I'm sure you'll be able to understand why." (Father Paul)

"Well, does that mean that church officials like Father Paul will do the rituals and the nobles will do the naming?" (Ars)

"Yes, that's right, that's how it would be." (Father Paul)

"If that's the case, what about the spiritual connection you mentioned earlier? The knight's mana is sent to the higher parent, right? That is ..." (Ars)

"That's what you're talking about? The ritual is only a mediator. The transfer of magic power will be given to the naming parent, that is, the nobleman." (Father Paul)

TLN: Ars was asking if the priests get the spiritual connection, and therefore a free mana-enhancer to the priests performing it.

 I see.

In other words, aristocrats increase their mana as the number of knights increases?

Basically, people who can play an active role on the battlefield have a lot of magic power, and many of them, like nii-san and Vargas, use mana to strengthen their bodies without using spells.

They make such people with a lot of mana into squires and educate them not to misuse magic before taking them as knights.

The noblemen give those new knights their own offensive magic.

It would not be possible without a degree of trust.

But even if there is some risk, the benefits of giving mana are great for the nobleman.

In addition to simply increasing their own family's strength, the nobleman who named the knight will receive a supply of magic power from the knight, which will lead to an increase in his own magic power.

"I don't know. If that's the case, why don't they just give more and more magic to the knights and people? The more magic we have, the stronger the nobles will be."

"Ars, that power can be dangerous if not used properly. It is not something that can be increased uncontrollably. The Church prevents that."

"Prevent? You mean you're stopping the nobles from naming lots of people?"

"Well, not exactly. The Church prevents uncontrolled and unrestricted naming."

"How? Does it mean that the church puts conditions on the naming rituals?"

"Yes, we ask them to give a certain amount of donations for the ceremony."

"A donation? Is that your plan...?! To make money?" (Ars)

"No, the namegivers are just receiving the feeling that they are offering some money to the Lord in gratitude of Him." (Father Paul)

It's just a matter of how you say it.

I guess it's not so wrong to take money for something that only the Church can do.

 It's actually quite effective.

 But, well, .......

Not only was I using the church's secret method without permission, but I was also interfering with their business.

This is a serious matter, and there is no way to explain it.

"By the way, I have one more question for you..." (Ars)

"What is it?" (Father Paul)

"You said that mana flows from the child to the parent, but what happens if the parent has another parent?" (Ars)

"A parent having more parents. I see, that would be natural. It's the same in that case. The magic power will still move from the child to the parent. It flows to the superior. However, it will be in the form of a portion of the parent's mana." (Father Paul)

 What does this mean?

Suppose a portion of the child's magical power, say 10%, is always flowing to the parent.

If the parent is also a child, does that mean that 10% of the parent's magical power will flow to the parent above him?

In this case, there is a possibility that the person in the middle will not have much mana

 So, what would one do?

I would probably try to increase the number of my own children.

In other words, this is a pyramid scheme/MLM, isn't it?

It's a type of scam, sometimes called a pyramid scheme or an MLM.

If you want to increase your share, you have to have more children, and then you have to entice them to have more grandchildren.

However, there is a critical problem with this method.

The problem with this method is that there is not an infinite number of people.

There will always be a limit to the number of children.

In other words, only those at the top can enjoy the benefits without needing to do too much.

"... Hmm? Maybe my mana is flowing to Father Paul?"

After hearing that much, I finally understood.

I finally understood how the church works.

I'm sure you've heard of the church's clever way of naming children to give them Life Magic when they reach a certain age.

It was only then that I realized that I had more than just my biological parents who were my parents.

TLN: And so we enter the dark side of the Church of the Holy Light. New plot incoming. I think.  Well, just a heads up, but we will start a new arc in 5 chapters. I'll give you the name at that time. It seems a bit special.
