Announcement To those wondering, I messed up in the numbering of chapters. So, I numbered chapter 80 as 79, so it caused a domino effect and it led to chapter 81 being called chapter 80, and chapter 82 being called chapter 81. Don't worry, I fixed it. However, I'm sorry if it made any of you confused. I didn't get any comments about it, but hey... Anyways, this is Chapter EIGHTY-THREE (83) and NOT Chapter EIGHTY-TWO (82). Just wanted to make that clear. Sorry for the interruption. Please continue reading.

Chapter 83 - Circumstances of the Fontana Family

"Ars, it seems you're still keeping the group together despite being a child. You must be having a hard time."

"Huh? Yes, I do. I'm sometimes underestimated because of my appearance."

"I'm sure they underestimate you. Let me tell you a little about myself. Ars, do you know how old I was when I became the next likely successor of the Fontana family?"

"No, I don't. ......"

"I was three. I was three years old when my father died and I became the most likely successor of the Fontana family. But you know, how can a three-year-old manage a fiefdom?"

 Three years old, huh?

Three years old, around the time I started plowing the fields.

Even if he had memories of his previous life like I do, he would not be able to organize a territory.

I've been told this and that before.

I was told that what I said was just shit that children say, and few people took me seriously.

As a result, I could do little more than tinker in the fields behind the house.

"Raymond took over for me and took charge of the estate. He used his position as my guardian to run the estate, and he continued to do so even after I grew up."

"I don't think that's a problem. It doesn't seem like a problem to me."

"You don't think it's a problem. He took advantage of the fact that I was the only male child in the Fontana family and ran the whole estate. With me as his puppet."

Seeing that Carlos had to almost become the head at around 3 years old, there probably wasn't another older person with the bloodline... and there probably still isn't.

I see, if you have a child at the top, you can practically make the territory your own.

If I think back, when I went to present the Valkyrie to the Fontana family, I think Raymond had decided on the permission to buy them at his own discretion.

But the permit had the Fontana family's coat of arms on it.

Maybe Raymond, the guardian of the family, had used the important stamp without permission.

"I've been waiting for the right moment," he said. "I've been waiting for the right moment to see Raymond fail. And now it's happened."

"Hmm? You mean you were expecting me to take him down?"

"No way. I didn't think so. But just the fact that a fort is being built in the northern forest settlement that he has authorized, without the knowledge of the Fontana family, is enough to cause his downfall. That's why, when you started the riot, I held Raymond himself responsible and sent him to put it down."

"Oh, so you're saying that Raymond made a mistake by granting me the land permit?"

"That's right. Even a small loss can be used as an opportunity to cut down his power. But then he suddenly disappeared. I had a hard time. After Raymond died, it was hard for me to control the power in the Fontana ranks."

 I see.

After I defeated the Fontana army led by Raymond in a field battle, the Fontana family was slow to move on.

They needed time to organize the chaos in their house.

The fact that I was concentrating on building the castle rather than attacking the walled city gave them the time they needed.

I wonder what would have happened if I had attacked then.

Well, let's not think about what ifs.

If it had turned into a siege, the number of our casualties would have definitely increased.

"Does that mean that Carlos-sama already has the power of the Fontana family in one hand? .... if that's the case, there's no point in making peace with us. ......"

"No, there is. Raymond's relatives and subordinates have been living off of his sweet nectar. If I were to take over power, they would lose that benefit. In other words, there will be a backlash. On the surface, they're obeying me now. I'll suppress that with you."

"Me?"

"Yes. Even though I have gathered the whole family, my own pawns are few in number. But with the new power of Barca, I will be able to keep it in check. That's why I'm telling you this. Ars, I'll give you a territory as a knight. You will be under my command."

Hmmm, being a nobleman must be tough.

I hadn't expected that the land I lived in was a whirlwind of power and chaos in a House of nobles.

I wondered what Carlos' proposal would do for me this time.

It seems that Carlos, the head of the family, has taken control of the Fontana territory, but is in a delicate position in terms of power relations with his retainers.

But even so, there's no doubt that he holds this land together as a nobleman.

The head of the family himself came to me and said that if I became his subordinate, he would let bygones be bygones and leave me in charge of the land, albeit a small one.

I don't know what he will say to me after becoming his subordinate, but I think it's not a bad idea.

At the very least, I'm grateful that he's not going to charge me with any crime for this incident.

And more importantly, the fact that I'm going to talk about this will affect my relationship with Bishop Paul, the man who organized the meeting.

To be honest, I'm more afraid of the possibility that the church might keep scrutinizing me.

 Okay, I've decided.

The reason I started fighting was because they said they were going to take away my land, and I couldn't back down now that I had soldiers in my hands.

It was not that I wanted to steal the land from the nobles.

However, if the conditions remained the same, we would be in trouble.

I'm going to ask them to treat me a little better in terms of conditions.

This is how the secret meeting between Carlos-sama and I unfolded until well past midnight.
