Chapter 20: Two Years Later (Part 2 – End)

Lute suddenly realized that Sylphia was the only one around him. The villagers who had been guiding them seemed to be afraid to enter the temple. Valtis and Titia, who were supposed to be flying around the temple, were now quiet, and I did not know where they were.

The sun was setting.

“Should we go back now? It would be troublesome if we stayed too long.”

Sylphia took his hand.

But when he tries to pull her hand away, Sylphia pulls it back. Sylphia’s hands are placed on top of him as if to wrap them around his.

“Sylphia…?”

“Please answer me, Lute-sama.”

Lute’s gaze, wondering as she calls his name, meets Sylphia’s serious gaze.

Sylphia looks straight up at Lute, blushing not because of the setting sun.

I will answer you.”

“…”

Lute’s mind had gone blank for a moment.

He had no intention of rushing Sylphia, so for the past two years he had told her he loved her, but he had never asked for a reply. First of all, he wanted to respect her will as the Saint who wants to tour the country, and also because he knew that Sylphia was confused by the position that was suddenly given to her.

It was also because of his trust that Sylphia would give him an answer, even if it took some time.

So,he knew that the time would come, but when it did,Ihe was surprisingly unprepared.

“Lute-sama, I-I… love Lute-sama… But I’ve never been confident… Because I was just a decoration, so I never thought I’d be able to be with you.”

“Sylphia…””

“But as I traveled around the country and became friends with Valtis-sama and Titia-sama, I became more confident in my role as the “Saint”. I think I saw what I had to do in the future. So now…”

Sylphia’s cheeks turn red as if they were boiling water. Not just her cheeks, but from her forehead to the tips of her ears.

In spite of her blushing redness, Sylphia spun her words hard.

“I want to be with you, Lute-sama. I want to protect this country with you…”

Realizing that her hand was shaking, Lute involuntarily embraced Sylphia.

“Thank you, Sylphia… Sylphia… will you marry me?”

“Yes, Lute-sama. I’m glad.”

Sylphia smiled back at him with moist eyes, and Lute tightened his arms around her.

The two overlapping shadows—curious spirits may or may not have been watching from the shadows of the temple’s pillars.

***

Back in the capital, Lute is officially appointed as the Crown Prince.

The wedding of Lute and Sylphia was a grand affair and was celebrated throughout the country.

Sylphia then rebuilt the abandoned temples and traveled herself from the capital to different areas whenever she had the opportunity.

When her children were born, she prayed with them, invoking the blessings of the spirits, but politely refused requests from the nobility and people to make Sylphia’s daughter, the princess, a saint.”

“We don’t need a saint anymore.”

That was her reason.

Even with a Saint, the spirits are forgotten and prayers cease. The opposite is also true: the spirits will remain here even if Saint is not here. If everyone remembers to be grateful.

There is no need to limit the power of the spirits to the Saint.

The lineage and qualifications of the Saint are decided by the human side. Even the method of Sylphia’s prayer was accepted.

Surprisingly, however, it was Valtis who was the most opposed to this.

[But we want to help and care for the people we love.]

Sylphia gave him a gentle smile.

“Yes. But I don’t think it should be limited to just one person, and I want to be more than Saint.”

[What else do you want to be…?]

[To be friends with Valtis-sama and Titia-sama.”

[Friends…]

[Don’t you know that too, Valtis?]

Valtis turned to Titia, who had a subtle expression on her face.

[I know! I was just surprised… Because we’re already friends, right?]

[Yes, I know, I know…]

Sylphia giggles at the sight of Valtis and Titia.

“Sharing experiences, traveling together, meeting people… Wouldn’t it be nice to be friends? And if the two of you become friends with people from all over the country, there is nothing more wonderful than that.”

[Sylphia…]

His red eyes widen, and then they start to twinkle.

[Yeah—I’ll do that. I like that]

[Sylphia is good at putting Valtis in a good mood. She knows exactly what Valtis would want. I have no objection to that.]

Titia smiled and nodded.

[So, from now on we and Sylphia will be friends!]

“And the children, everyone in the castle, everyone in the Royal Capital, and everyone in the countryside.”

[Yeah… We may fight sometimes, but as friends we can get along again. Yes, yes, that’s a good idea].

The two of them jumped in the air, and Valtis was excited. Titia seemed to be looking at him with a calm gaze and her ears were also twitching happily.

Sylphia’s thoughts were long-lasting, and the spirits remained in the land without the “Saint”

Sylphia had fulfilled her own goal of being a bridge between the spirits and humans.

The country continued to prosper, thanks to the good government of Lute, who ascended to the throne.

Eventually, the land of Sylphia and her people became famous as a land of people who loved flowers and good food, protected by spirits and attracted people from other countries as well.

The last saint who carried out great reforms. The only people who know that she used to be known as a “decorated saint” are now only the spirits, Sylphia and Lute.

The End.
