Shepherding Humanity

Chapter 30: A Pitiful Position

The Babylonian Tribe.

In the time it took Xu Zhi to have lunch, another ten years have passed.

The tribe has grown more prosperous.

The three witches were far, far weaker than Gilgamesh, but they had still been able to defend their homes against the giant beasts.

Humans now occupied a position in the middle of the food chain.

While they couldn't fight off some of the more terrifying beasts, not just any kind of beast would be able to treat them as food. Even the powerful ones would have to pay a terrible price when attacking the tribe.

There were women planting crops on the field.

In the distance, people in animal skins were dismantling the carcass of a giant beast.

After they’ve ensured their own safety, they began to frantically expand their population so that more people who could assimilate the blood of the Evil Eye would appear. Having more witches was the best way for them to protect themselves.

In a verdant glen deep in the mountains outside the tribe.

The mountain spring Ameya had the dreamy beauty of a realm of fantasy. The ground was covered by a lush green carpet of grass, and flowers were in full bloom. Within the foggy white mist, three beautiful women were bathing. Their skin was as white as snow, their bodies were slender and beautiful; they were like sublime goddesses out of ancient myths.

More than ten years have passed, and the three witches were already in their thirties.

The Bugapes only had a lifespan of forty years. Most of their peers had either left this world or were about to die of old age, but the years have left almost no mark on them.

The three women who were bathing in the Ameya spring were still as youthful and fit as teenage girls.

Back then, Gilgamesh had lived for more than two hundred years after taking in a second gene. The three witches were only in their thirties, for them, their long life has just begun.

Medea was the decisive and deadly witch who was in charge of warfare and glory. Soaking herself in the clear spring water, she languidly stretched her perfectly smooth legs. "Melissa has also passed away last night. Our sister who grew up beside us, who explored the world with us as children, and eagerly searched for a way to vanquish the giant beasts at our side… she is already a graying old woman."

Cassandra gently flicked the water. She was the gentle witch in charge of caring for livestock and herbs. She spoke quietly, with emotion: "She had countless children and grandchildren by her bedside to see her off. That is already the most satisfying ending possible… Over the long years, I have come to realize that only the bond between us three sisters is eternal. The world around us keeps changing, but we are the only ones who do not age."

Circe smiled seductively, her eyes flashing: "Oh? Although my eminent elder sisters are the exalted guardian goddesses of Babylon, you live alone. Are you envious of ordinary girls with loving husbands and children?"

Circe swam over. Her pale fingertips gently stroked her sisters’ snow-white backs as she playfully teased them: "Sisters, you've never been with a man, you just don't know how good it feels. That’s why you’re so cold and aloof. If you want, I can take the place of a man and let you experience a woman's pleasure…"

Medea and Cassandra both took a few steps backward as they warily looked at her, and calmly replied: "Circe, show us some respect! The two of us will have nothing to do with your debauchery."

"What does it matter?"

Circe smiled faintly. Her smile was flirtatious and coy. "I can let you experience the pleasures of being a woman, without having to deprive a man of his life. I'm not one of those weak men, even if you lose control of your mental powers, you won't kill me."

However, the two other women remained wary of her.

They knew what Circe wanted to do. Circe was trying to corrupt them little by little and make them like her. Once they’ve given in to their lust, they wouldn’t be able to stop themselves and would join Circe in harming the men of the tribe.

Back then, after the two of them had seen Circe’s fall, they made a silent vow and set down three iron laws for witches.

1. Before being tested by the blood of the Evil Eye, a witch must be a chaste woman who has sworn before God that she will not love a man for as long as she lives

2. After becoming a witch, carnal acts are strictly forbidden! It is forbidden for a witch to approach males. Once she has lost her chastity, she would surely fall. The Lord would turn his back on her and she will turn into an evil witch.

3. Witches are not allowed to abuse their power and attack other people.

Circe is a classic example of this.

She previously had a husband and her lust was so strong that she couldn’t resist going after men.

Therefore, it was necessary to deny all contact with the opposite sex in order to prevent the appearance of a second Circe.

A witch’s mental power was too strong, and they’d kill their partner if they lost themselves in pleasure. Spending their lives without a lover was the price they had to pay for their power.

Over the past ten years, four new witches have been born after hundreds of deaths. They strictly abided by the "Three Iron Laws of Witches", and became the guardian goddesses of the tribe. Thanks to that, the Babylonian tribe now had four subtribes.

It wasn't that there hadn’t been any males who tried to take in the blood of the Evil Eye over the years, the tribe was never short of brave men. But the blood of the evil eye was unique, and the probability of success for females was much higher than that of males.

That said, not all of the men had failed.

Over the past decade, there have actually been four females and one male who successfully received the Evil Eye’s power. The first male wizard was born from among them, and Circe was ecstatic.

Circe had become synonymous with death and fear in the tribe over the years. Every man she has charmed into her tent had died in satisfaction after a night of pleasure.

Men trembled in fear.

Although Circe tried to control herself, she couldn’t bear her loneliness, and a few men in the tribe inexplicably died each month.

When the wizard appeared, Circe thought she had finally found a partner who could serve her without dying.

Unfortunately, Circe's mind has grown too strong over the years. Ordinary men died after a single night of pleasure. The wizard lasted through an entire week of debauchery, but he also died in the end, his mind broken.

The death of the only male wizard left the tribe’s men in despair. They understood that they could no longer escape their fate. Their civilization would be dominated by women, and they could no longer protect their tribe. On that day, the valiant warriors of Babylon knew…
