The reason why I can’t use magic is because my Magic Energy is not favored by spirits, the source of magic. In other words, it’s because of an inborn trait. I can’t use magic through the spirits because I don’t have the magic energy that they like.

Nonetheless, I still have magic energy. It’s still possible for me to use magic, the magical tools that I’ve developed for various reasons allowed me to use some kind of pseudo-magic. I’ve made this never-before-seen kind of magic using concepts based on the knowledge of my previous life.

Will I ever be able to use magic normally? From my research so far, I’ve determined that using magic normally might not be possible.

Then how about changing my magic energy to suit the spirits’ tastes? …That might be worth investigating.

「What else do you think I can do? I’ve already come to the conclusion that spirits doesn’t like me right from the Soul Phase」

「According to Anise-sama’s theory, magic energy is like the blood that spills from the soul. If magic cannot be used, then that means the energy is not compatible with the spirits, is that correct?」

「In theory, I suppose. I’m not sure if there’s any other way around that.」

「Yes, I think so too as far as I know.」

Myself, Euphie, and Illya were in agreement. If I can’t deal with this major fundamental problem, then I have no business using magic through the spirits.

「There is something I would like to confirm, Princess.」

「What is it?」

「Your Highness can perform magic, but only through magic tools right?」

「That’s right. I don’t mind even if you call it an imitation, but the end-results are still the same aren’t they?」

Being able to use magic is very important to me. I wanted to use it right from the get go, but I wasn’t even qualified to step through the entrance. So I made a magic tool and forced my way through it.

Besides, magic and magic tools are two sides of the same coin. There are magic tools that help use magic too. Just like Euphie’s Arc en Ciel.

「So far, the Princess has produced several successful innovations. There are two kinds. First are the magic tools and second is your tattoo that used monsters as a catalyst to channel magic.」

「You dare differentiate them?」

「I do. And I was wondering, Princess.」

「Yeah?」

「Was engraving it directly onto your skin really necessary?」

Ah— Right. It’s definitely not because I didn’t even think about it.

The tattoo used ink imbued with crushed magic stones and other materials. Drawing it on myself was a way to help my body accept the engravings as a part of myself.

「It’s not that I had to do it, but depending on the magic stone’s properties, I can only use them for a limited number of times. More importantly, if I used it on inorganic equipment, I wouldn’t know what materials are compatible to be used as a vessel. I was afraid to mess it up so I didn’t even try. If I failed, I would lose it all, it was too risky.」

「So instead of risking the materials, you risked your own body and used the dragon’s magic stone directly on yourself?」

「Ah~ Ah~ I can’t hear you. Can’t hear you~」

Looking back, it was a bit of a gamble, but I was just desperate. I wanted to be able to use magic. Though, I was confident that I would succeed—because of the curse for killing a dragon.

One who slays a dragon
is also a dragon
Be a dragon
Be strong

From time to time, I seem to catch these residual thoughts. I think this is the reason why I get so excited when I’m fighting; because of this curse, the lingering sentiments of the dragon resonates within me. I haven’t told anyone about it though, because if I did, I’m afraid they’ll just have another thing to worry about.

「I see. So it wouldn’t be very efficient to use a magic tool for it.」

「Also, I’m not even sure if I want to make one, since it will have to be custom made and there’s no telling whether or not it’ll work. Materials are scarce after all. It would be fun to give it a try though.」

「Then let’s set aside that idea for now…But before I continue, Anise-sama. Magic stones are found inside the bodies of monsters, it’s created when they accumulate power by feeding on spirits; and magic stones are a subcategory of spirit stones, am I right so far?」

「Hm? Yeah, that’s right.」

「Then, can humans create magic stones?」

……I froze. Man-made magic stones?

「…It’s theoretically possible isn’t it? Yeah, it is.」

「Then wouldn’t that be a better a catalyst than a monster’s magic stone?」

「I think that depends on the nature of the person, but I honestly don’t want to try it. Are you telling me to be like a named monster? What’s wrong with you?」

Magical Energy is like the incorporeal blood that overflows from the soul, but to create a magic stone, you’d have to absorb excessive amounts of spirits. I don’t think a human soul can withstand that much magic energy; and even if the soul survived the process, it would be too optimistic to assume that there will be no side effects.

Although it might be possible to create a magic stone using the same process that creates a named monster, I feel like this is a realm that humans should not step in. I’m not that much of a mad scientist. Oh, but if I had a human guinea pig, I might just try it.

「How about making a magic stone using a different method?」

「If only there’s another way… Any ideas?」

「Wouldn’t it be possible for Euphilia-sama to make a contract with the Great Spirits?」

「…Spirit Contractors!」

I sprang up excitedly. Spirit Contractors! The beginning of this country, kings, and aristocrats! Would it be possible to use that method? …No, there is too little information to jump to conclusions. Calm down. I took a deep breath and sat back down on my chair.

Illya’s suggestion might be right on the money. I can’t use magic through the spirits, but Euphilia has the magic energy that they really like. She can make a contract with the spirits, and it might be possible to have them create a special spirit stone.

「That could work…」

「I’ve had many encounters with spirits, but I’ve never had an encounter with a Great Spirit, much less a God.」

Euphie said with a worried look on her face. She’s a rare genius when it comes to magic, but it seems like she’s hesitant to do things she doesn’t have experience in.

Nations protect their own Spirit Contractors and keep them under wraps, so they rarely appear in public. They themselves don’t want to, because there’s always the risk of kidnappings. For their own safety, they avoid bringing attention to themselves unless necessary. That’s what my Father said and I completely agree.

「Hmmm, but if I want to research Spirit Contracts… I’ll have to ask the Ministry of Magic.」

「If I’m being honest, I don’t think they’ll tell you anything unless Your Highness changes her beliefs.」

「I will NEVER accept their religion!」

It’s because I can’t use magic in the first place. Not even prayers can help me with that, so I have nothing to do with beliefs and devotion. I don’t have a shred of faith in me and also, I don’t feel like going to church. This is exactly why I’m shunned by the Ministry of Magic.

I actually don’t care much about what their beliefs are, but the Ministry of Magic does care about mine. So they raise up a fuss, “that’s blasphemy against Gods, Spirits, and Magic!” they say. Ha~ What a drag.

「Well at least we found a way, but we’re stuck at a dead end for now. Guess I’ll just go collect materials for a while.」

「Is it not possible to talk with the Spirit Contractors of the Kingdom of Palletia? If you wish to know more about them, you may as well just ask them directly.」

「You really think my Father will let me meet them?」

「………」

「………」

「That’s definitely going to cause problems.」

「Even I wouldn’t let you meet them.」

「The two of you getting along so well brings a tear to my eye.」

I’ve heard that in our country, there are indeed Spirit Contractors contracted with Great Spirits. Though I have no idea whoever they are, wherever they are. Father told me nothing about them. He probably thinks I’ll just cause him a stomach ache if I figure out their whereabouts.

So for the time being, I’ll be researching known materials, legends, and folklores. Also, going to places closely related to the spirits isn’t such a bad idea. No wait, that’s a terrific idea. The more I think about it the more I realize there are things I can do, I am so looking forward to this!

「But that is another story and shall be told another time, Princess.」

「Come again? Illya?」

「Please bear with me, Your Highness. Hereafter, your classes on—manners and etiquette of a royalty—will begin shortly.」

My reaction was instant. Kicking away the chair, I sprang up and hurled myself through the window. My body flies through the air and the crashing sound echoes throughout the mansion.

「Freedoooooooom~!!」

Who’s gonna attend what???

Just as I was about to book it, Illya jumped through the broken window and dropped on top of me.

「Where is my Democracy?!」

「Whatever do you mean, Royal Princess? Everyone in the Knight Order! This is not a drill. PLEASE, capture the Princess!」

When I look around our crash site, I see the knights have already gathered, they were waiting for me.

It’s oh so easy to imagine. As soon as I get caught, my freedom-loving self will be hog-tied and dragged down to the pits of hell.

「Nobody can drag me down!」

I’ll get away… As far as possible!

A few minutes later… I was rolled up in carpet, dragged around by Illya, and thrown into a study room.

I don’t wanna. Don’t wannaaaa~
