Though words had clearly explained, punishment was still indispensable. The whole afternoon, Chu Jinglan almost tossed Ye Huaiyang to death. Yue’ya, who was keeping watch downstairs, had her complexion alternate several rounds listening to her family young miss crying one moment then calling out the next yet she dared not leave half a step, lest some servants who were inattentive barge in and leave Ye Huaiyang with a bad reputation of being wanton during broad daylight.

After all that’s said, it is still Wangye’s fault. He never cared about the timing and location each time. Usually, it’s still fine but how could two people who were quarreling ended up in bed?

Yue’ya simply could not fathom it and soon realized this was not the first time. Young Miss has many mischievous ideas and always acted on her own. Every once in a while, she would enrage Wangye and this seems to be the only method that Wangye would often use to settle the score with her and the efficacy of trying repeatedly is the immediate acquiesce of Young Miss who no longer dared act recklessly by herself. Thinking of this, Yue’ya somewhat admired Wangye again.

There’s a saying that everything has its nemesis and on the whole, is this precisely what it meant?

The two people finally came out before nightfall. Ye Huaiyang seemed to have napped a little but was still steeped with lethargy. After all the soft couch in Lingyun Pavilion is too small and lying prone on him, she could not sleep comfortably. Besides, she also felt extremely uncomfortable drenched in sweat. So, they came downstairs after she recuperated moments later. Chu Jinglan took her back to the room for a bath where she made up for her sleep again until the hour of xushi (7 pm-9 pm) before having their meals.

There were a lot of tender affections but someone could not sit still on the other side.

“Elder Brother, could you bear to see me suffer this kind of grievances?”

Sitting in her own room, the rim of Meng Chen’s eyes were slightly red while the pair of slender fair hands clutched a silk handkerchief tightly as if trying to restrain herself over something. Her elder brother, Meng Xuan was by her side and took a long sigh looking at her appearance. Even though he felt very much distressed, he could merely dissuade her tactfully.

“Chen’er, it’s not that I don’t want to stand up for you but a forcible picked melon is not sweet!* There are many handsome talented young men in Northern Land, why do you insist on marrying someone who doesn’t love you?”

[T/N: 强扭的瓜不甜 (Qiáng niǔ de guā bù tián) – metaphors for nothing forcibly done is going to be agreeable and often ended with unsatisfactory result]

“No! He has feelings for me! We have been together for many years in Northern Land in which he has always doted and protected me, so how could there possibly be no place for me in his heart?”

Large teardrops trickled down from the corners of Meng Chen’s eyes and soon soaked the lapels of her clothes. Taking out a handkerchief, Meng Xuan wiped her tears but she unbendingly dodged away. Looking at this situation, Meng Xuan was extremely helpless and his speech became more direct.

“If Jinglan likes you, how come he never mentioned the matter of marrying you these past six years?”

“That’s because he was wholeheartedly set on revenge!”

“Then how did Ye Huaiyang make Jinglan marry her? Even if it was in the name of bestowment but based on my understanding of Jinglan, no one could force him to do what he does not want.” Meng Xuan stared profoundly at her and spat out a few words in a low voice, “Eventually, Jinglan is fond of her.”

Hearing what was said, Meng Chen’s tears trickled down more ferociously and the corners of her eyes became red through and through while her heart felt unbearable pain and flowing of blood as if slashed repeatedly by a knife.

“You are talking nonsense! I don’t want to hear it! You get out!”

In spite of her pushing and shoving, Meng Xuan forcefully hugged her and patted her just like coaxing a child, appearing wholeheartedly distressed.

“Chen’er, as a matter of fact, you have long known about this, isn’t it? The betrothal letter that you asked from our parents when you went back is just merely forcing Jinglan to marry you, right? Listen to me and let it go. You will only cause more harm to yourself if you go on like this. Do tell, how could I condone this?”

“Then you can just help me!” Meng Chen grasped his hands firmly with an almost demented look. “Elder Brother, you go back and tell father that Ye Huaiyang bullied me then ask father to personally write a letter to Cousin. As Cousin has always respected father, he will definitely agree to marry me!”

Sighing deeply, Meng Xuan responded, “Father will not do such a thing. In his heart, the Meng family and Jinglan ought to concentrate on getting vengeance. So how could he allow matters of love to plague Jinglan?”

“Vengeance, vengeance, vengeance, all of you only know about that! But why should my happiness be sacrificed? I’ve never even met that so-called aunt, what’s so great about her? Why are all of you dwelling on a person who has long been dead?”

“Chen’er!” Seeing her speech getting more and more outrageous, Meng Xuan couldn’t help his expression from sinking and reprimanded sternly, “Do you know what you are saying? Aunt was not only our family, she also saved father’s life by testing the poison herself and without her, you and I would not have existed in this world at all! So how could you utter such heartless words!”

The corner of Meng Chen’s mouth revealed a little sneer and she soon released the grips of his hands then staggered two steps back before falling on the stool, no longer looking at Meng Xuan.

After all, Meng Xuan still loves his younger sister dearly and realized he might have been a little too harsh, he could not help but lean over and gently gather her shoulders then coaxed patiently, “Chen’er, I didn’t mean to reprove you. You can say those words in front of me but don’t ever mention it in front of father, understand?”

No one answered him.

Having a spell of headache, he could not think of a better argument to dissuade Meng Chen for the time being, so he decided to take a step back and said, “I’ll go back to my room first. Do think about it calmly and once you have figured it out, we will go back to Northern Land together in a few days.”

Saying that, Meng Xuan shook his head and left the room. Looking at the gradual distance of his back, Meng Chen clenched her hands into tight fists all of a sudden and rushed out of King Lan mansion with bitter hatred.

She wanted to face Chu Jinglan and ask clearly if he truly has not even the least bit of affection for her.

The moon transverse while the Big Dipper crisscrossed over the sky and the sparse shadows slanted under the plum trees, quietly gathering the silvery light.

The color of the sky was not early anymore as small night lanterns were hung up in front of the Ye manor’s door. A young page boy turned around and was about to enter the door with a long bamboo pole when a dark shadow stretched out silently under his feet and scared him witless. Looking back, his expression became all the more unsightly when he found it was Miss Meng from next door.

What is she doing here at this late hour?

Like a female rakshasa (demon), Meng Chen stood still at the door and asked coldly, “Which courtyard is Wangye in?”

The page boy replied bluntly with three words, “I don’t know.”

Seemingly having expected he would not cooperate, Meng Chen lifted her foot and rushed in. At once, the page boy panicked. Throwing away the obstructive bamboo pole, he chased after her and kept saying, “Miss Meng, you can’t do this” as he followed behind her but would Meng Chen pay him any heed? She merely went wherever there was light, overbearing and without the slightest care of the etiquette. Due to the distinction between men and women, the page boy dared not use any force on her and instantly felt anxious that he sweated profusely.

“Stop right there!”

A female voice unexpectedly resounded in the courtyard. Looking up and realizing it was Yue’ya, the page boy’s eyes instantly glowed as if catching sight of a rescuer and did not neglect to explain, “Miss Yue’ya, I was just hanging the lanterns at the door a moment ago when Miss Meng she…”

“I got it. You may retreat.”

Yue’ya beckoned for him to withdraw then stood alone on the trestle bridge right in front of Meng Chen. Her shapely body was not too wide nor too slender but just enough to block the pathway that Meng Chen halted her steps. Anger was dimly visible on her pretty face and her gaze was like an arrow that shot straight at Yue’ya.

“Get out of the way!”

Yue’ya merely pretended not to hear her and spoke with a hypocritical smile, “Miss Meng, Wangye and Wangfei have already rested. If there’s anything, it’s better for you to come again tomorrow.”

“Who do you think you are to even dare block my way?”

Raising her hand, Meng Chen ruthlessly flung Yue’ya who fell onto the edge of the bridge pillar. Fortunately, the ground was paved with rounded cobblestones which did not graze her arm. The page boy who had not gone far immediately turned and ran back. Carefully, he supported Yue’ya up then went to chase after Meng Chen who had already crossed the bridge but was stopped by Yue’ya.

“There’s no need to run after her.”

“Why?” He asked puzzledly.

Yue’ya smiled disdainfully, “If you don’t let her cross, she would still be immersed in her own fantasy. Just let her hit the wall so she would realize that our family Young Miss is not someone who can easily be bullied.”

Meng Chen had reached the door of the bedroom moments later.

The hook-like radiance of the moon was like white silk and the lamp in the room was just the size of a bean. Two closely interlocking black shadows were reflected on the window paper. With attentive hearing, the sound of soft chats could be heard transmitted through the window gap.

“I think you are born in the year of the dog. A few days ago, you bit my left shoulder and this afternoon, you bit my right arm. I’m afraid there will be no place that can be looked upon on my body after a few more times.”

The shadow on the right moved slightly followed closely by a female voice that sounded cloyingly soft with a hint of chagrin, “How can you blame me? I’ve told you not to touch me there but you insisted on touching it!”

“Where?” The man laughed softly when the shadow somewhat slanted, seemingly pressing down on the girl, “Here?”

The girl did not spit out any more words, instead it was replaced with a string of delicate moans that were sweet and charming along with the ambiguous breathings coming out of the room and went straight into Meng Chen’s ears that her face immediately turned ghastly pale.

Throughout the whole afternoon, the shadow of Chu Jinglan could not be seen at all. She merely thought he went to appease Ye Huaiyang but did not expect this was how he comforted ……

There was a sudden blurriness before her eyes as intense pain began squeezing her chest. Grabbing the railing on the side abruptly, Meng Chen almost fell onto the flower beds under the porch. Amidst her rapid breathings, the sound of both people fooling and bantering in flirtation resounded again.

“One more round … my legs will be really limp … King Uncle waits … hmm … are you going to carry me back to Fuyu Xuan?”

Breathing heavily, Chu Jinglan said, “Just sleep here. Why go back?”

“Aren’t there guests in the mansion…”

Ye Huaiyang’s words sounded very sensible and complied with the etiquette but this half-spoken sentence was worth a little pondering. So with his eyebrows tilted, Chu Jinglan looked at her for a moment and deliberately said, “Then I will go back now.”

Saying that, the two shadows separated abruptly. Thinking that Chu Jinglan was about to come out, Meng Chen quickly wiped the tears on her face away but who knew, Ye Huaiyang’s legs would suddenly clamped onto Chu Jinglan’s waist. With her lower belly tightened and inner contraction, Chu Jinglan’s expression changed on the spot.

“King Uncle still wants to leave?”

The exhale of Ye Huaiyang’s breath was like the orchid imparting wisps of intrigue that placated the listener when a burst of wildfire rushed through his bloodstream and seethed Chu Jinglan’s whole body with excitement. In the next second, his sinewy arm wrapped around her body tightly as he bent over and dived into the depths.

“You’ve really advanced to even master this move!”

Panting heavily, Chu Jinglan moved swiftly in and out of Ye Huaiyang like a cheetah that each thrust brought out a frenzied experience. Ye Huaiyang’s cries were faintly soft at first but later turned extremely brief and high-pitched as if she was about to run out of breath but even so, she didn’t weep nor beg for mercy like usual which utterly surprised Chu Jinglan.

“Didn’t you say you’re dying earlier, eh?”

Ye Huaiyang’s fair forehead was already covered with beads of sweat but the leisurely lifted glance from her phoenix eyes enticed him with boundless charms.

“I’d rather expire in this bed beside you … than allow you to go back…”

Chu Jinglan laughed, “A little temptress who says one thing and means another.”

He then continued burying his head and worked diligently without mentioning the matter of leaving anymore while Ye Huaiyang composedly took a quick glance out the window before closing her eyes and joining him drift relentlessly over cloud seven amidst their mingled moans and gasps.

The shadow outside the window disappeared at some point of time.
