Chapter 6 – The long awaited sword is now complete!

When I got back to the city, I headed to the general store where I had been helped yesterday to make tamahagane¹.

At the general store, there were quite a few people who were players, just like yesterday.

I’m looking for beginner alchemy kits and beginner woodworking kits. I thought they would have these as well, since they also sell pickaxes, and I’m glad they do.

There are also a variety of other beginner kits, including blacksmithing kits from the Blacksmith’s Guild and potion kits for making potions.

【Name】 Beginner’s Alchemy Kit: Quality 3 ・・・ 500G

【Description】 A kit for beginners to do their favorite alchemy. It contains a piece of cloth with red, blue, and large black magic circles on it that can be used to make almost anything, but not very large items.

【Name】 Beginner Woodworking Kit: Quality 3 ・・・ 500G

【Description】 A kit for beginners to do their favorite woodworking. It contains the bare necessities for woodworking, such as a saw. Most things can be made with this if you spend enough time.

Now, the reason why I bought these is because I decided that I couldn’t make tamahagane in the hearth of that Blacksmith’s Guild.

Originally, to make tamahagane, iron and coal carbon had to be mixed. An Alloy, if you will. Maybe the hearth is not powerful enough. Someday I’ll buy a house better equipped than this one!

……. I’m off topic, but wouldn’t it be possible to mix iron and coal using alchemy… ? That is why I came up with this idea!

I’ll be back later with the woodworking kit!

Without bothering to explain it to anyone, I put the alchemy kit in my inventory and returned to the Blacksmith’s Guild in a happy mood.

「I’m back!」

「Oh! Welcome back!」

「Can I borrow the hearth for a moment?」

「Feel free to use it!」

「Thank you very much!」

Well, I won’t use the hearth just yet, I added in my mind.

I entered the guild and sat down in front of the hearth on the far right and spread out my alchemy kit.

I laid out a black cloth with a large magic circle on it, about 50 cm in length and width each, and then laid out another cloth with another magic circle on each side, about 2 sizes smaller, in red and blue.

Then, I placed 1 coal to 1 iron ingot on the red and blue cloths each.

I wish I could do this in real life too…

I put my hand on the magic circle rather than on the black cloth, and when I consumed 200 MP, the magic circle that I was putting my hand on began to glow gold.

The magic circles on the red and blue cloths shone as well.

Within a few seconds after they started to glow, the ingots and coal began to float and mix into a ball of light a few dozen centimeters off the spot.

The light was quite bright and also very cold, as if it was absorbing the heat from the surroundings. I’m freezing…

And that’s how it was done…

【Name】 Tamahagane: Quality 3

【Description】 Steel produced by alchemy. The quality is inferior to that of a real Tamahagane, and it is more brittle in comparison.

◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆

I wonder if the quality goes down when made with alchemy…

But it’s not as fragile as it looks.

It may be more brittle than a sword made with a real tamahagane, but as long as you swing it consciously to prevent it from breaking, it won’t break!

The resulting tamahagane was a large lump, so I broke it into pieces of about 5 cm in size.

This is where the hearth finally comes in!

Let’s burn the steel and strike it! That’s when I realized.

Somehow the whole thing glows when I strike on it. Why is that?

It’s not difficult to see or anything, but… I’m a little concerned.

――Ka~a~an~! Ka~a~an~!

―Ka~a~an~!!

I finally finished it by striking the steel exactly where it should be struck, which was softer and easier than the real thing. That took a lot of time…

The lack of STR is resonating to me…

【Name】 Sword (Blade): Quality 5

Durability: 300

STR:100

AGI:35

O~h! Quality increased by 2!! Did it go up because I did it properly and diligently?

But still, the description…

Who would equip it in this state?

And the name is… I don’t know if I can make it yet. I’ll do it when I have the right tools.

Next is the handle and scabbard.

I stored the alchemy kit in my inventory and took out the woodworking kit.

First, I placed the sword on the wood and framed it with coal.

Then saw away the unnecessary parts accordingly.

The scabbard should not be too tight or too loose, so I carefully carved it with the chisel, while the handle was shaped to fit the blade perfectly.

This took a while too…

The lack of DEX is a problem… Maybe it’s a good thing I raised it a little?

I was able to save some time by raising my STR and DEX a bit, but it still took me 7 hours in real world time to make the sword.

I started at 6:00 p.m., and including everything… It’s 1 a.m.! That makes me sleepy.

But I’m very happy that I was able to get the sword to fit properly!

【Name】 Sword: Quality 5

【Description】 A sword in a form not found in this land. Pure white handle and scabbard. When the sword is sheathed, it appears to be nothing more than a stick with iron parts attached to the end of the wood.

I’ll name it tomorrow… No, let’s do it this evening.

Already… Sleepy…

Footnote.

Tamahagane –  (玉鋼) is a type of steel made in the Japanese tradition. The word tama means “round and precious”, like a gem. The word hagane means “steel”. Tamahagane is used to make Japanese swords, knives, and other kinds of tools.
