Chapter 62: Are You Still Lying At A Time Like This?

“That female corpse….can talk….”

Hearing this, Wen Heyin was so startled that he jumped backwards while shuddering, which caused him to end up banging his head against the small window of the carriage: “AH!!!! What?!!! The female corpse can talk?!!!”

“Oh damn, why did you hit your head? Be more careful.” The evil Mu Zhiming couldn’t help, but laugh in spite of this. But then Mu Zhiming moved forward to take Wen Heyin’s head in his hands and examine it: “Did you hit your head very hard?”

“It wasn’t too bad, Young Master. But, why would a corpse talk, huh?” Wen Heyin asked.

Mu Zhiming reached out his hand and rubbed the sore spot on Wen Heyin’s head as he said: “What I meant was that that female corpse should have some kind of clue that wasn’t previously destroyed. This clue should have been very obvious, so obvious that the murderer didn’t hesitate to break into the Capital Prefecture at night to steal that woman’s corpse.”

“So that’s what it was.” Wen Heyin nodded thoughtfully.

Mu Zhiming quietly muttered: “But what kind of clue could it be…..?”

“Darn it.” Wen Heyin anxiously said. “Young Master, don’t bother thinking about it. That female corpse has already been stolen. Even if the clue were so obvious, we have no way of knowing. It’s no use racking your brain over it.”

“No…..” Mu Zhiming muttered. “The thing I can’t understand has nothing to do with that.”

“Then what else could be going on?” Wen Heyin asked.

At that instant, Mu Zhiming’s eyes suddenly brightened. As he looked at Wen Heyin, Mu Zhiming asked: “A-Yin, do you know where the Coroners from the Capital Prefecture live?”

""

Wen Heyin, who had helped Pei Hantang solve a case before, really knew where the Coroners lived: “Yes, I know.”

“Quick, let’s go find the Coroner now! Point the way to the coachman!” Mu Zhiming hastened to say.

Wen Heyin was very confused: “Eh?”

Mu Zhiming said urgently: “It’s too late to explain. Let’s go, quickly.”

“Oh, oh! Hmm.” Wen Heyin immediately lifted the curtain of the carriage and went out to show the coachman the way.

Mu Zhiming took several deep breaths, until his eyes gradually calmed down.

‘If the clue was really so obvious, why didn’t the Coroner discover it?’

‘Did he really not see it?’

‘Or…. did he see it and just didn’t want to say anything….?’

The Coroner of the Capital Prefecture was living on the outskirts of the Capital, in a remote town. Due to his bad luck, he had no wife or children, so he lived alone. Even his house was a dilapidated wooden house, with no neighbors around.

Mu Zhiming and Wen Heyin simply walked to the front of the wooden house, when all of a sudden, they heard the sound of fighting and shouting for help coming from inside the house.

Mu Zhiming shouted: “A-Yin!”

Wen Heyin immediately stepped forward and kicked open the wooden door. At that moment, he saw the old table and chairs scattered all over the floor. A man dressed in black was pinning the Coroner against the floor, who was crying and screaming for help. In his right hand, the black-clad man held a dagger against the Coroner’s neck, threatening him to shut up.

At the most critical moment, Wen Heyin ran and grabbed the wrist of the man dressed in black, blocking his stabbing motion. Right after, Wen Heyin twisted the man’s arm in order to pull him away from the Coroner.

The man dressed in black and Wen Heyin threw a few punches at each other, but when the man noticed that he couldn’t subdue Wen Heyin, he decided not to bother with him anymore. After kicking Wen Heyin to get him off him, the man broke the window and ran away. Wen Heyin wanted to go after him, but just at that instant, Mu Zhiming shouted at him: “A-Yin! Don’t chase after him, it’s too dangerous!”

Wen Heyin stopped immediately, and ran back to Mu Zhiming’s side.

Mu Zhiming raised his arm and grabbed Wen Heyin’s shoulders, moving him back and forth to observe him in detail: “Are you hurt anywhere?”

“No!” Wen Heyin held his head high, looking quite proud.

“Alright.” Mu Zhiming breathed out lightly.

Then, both of them turned their heads to look at the Coroner, who had curled up in a corner, trembling with fright.

Mu Zhiming originally came with the intention of intimidating the Coroner and asking him questions. But how could he have thought that he would inadvertently end up saving the Coroner’s life?

However, the assassin dared to commit another crime and kill a person abruptly on the outskirts of the Capital. His boldness and savageness against human life made Mu Zhiming filled with anger as well as resentment.

Both men stepped forward to help the Coroner, looking for a cup among the ruined house to give him some water to drink. The Coroner drank the water as he continued to tremble. Only then did the Coroner recover from his shock and sobbed: “I haven’t offended anyone, why would anyone want to kill me? What should I do from now on?”

Mu Zhiming asked: “Coroner, do you remember the female corpse you examined yesterday?”

The Coroner’s voice trembled as he intermittently said: “Ans-answering th-the Lord, lowly me re-remembers it.”

Mu Zhiming continued to ask: “Have you hidden anything?”

At that instant, the Coroner hesitated in his movements, and even lowered his gaze with a frown: “Low-lowly me doesn’t know what, what the Lord is talking about. How, how could lowly me withhold information about a corpse?”

Wen Heyin ferociously stated: “Do you have a guilty conscience?! Why are you still lying at a time like this?!”

The Coroner stammered and shook his head.

Mu Zhiming pondered for a moment and asked: “Was it gold and silver, or jewelry?”

The Coroner suddenly raised his eyes and looked at Mu Zhiming.

Mu Zhiming kindly advised him: “Take it out, why hide it when you were almost killed for it? Even though you’re guilty of hiding the corpse’s belongings, I will intercede for you with Lord Pei at the Capital Prefecture.”

The Coroner hesitated for a moment, but in the end he shakily walked over to a large wooden box with missing corners. He reached out to open the wooden box, took out a brocade pouch with money inside, and handed it to Mu Zhiming.

Mu Zhiming took the brocade pouch with the money inside, opened it and saw some silver and gold inside. There was also a jade ring that had the word ‘Yuan’ engraved on it. When Mu Zhiming was about to take out the jade ring for a closer look, Wen Heyin suddenly came up to him and said in surprise: “Eh? That money pouch looks familiar. I think I’ve seen it somewhere before…..”
