50 – Left First

It wasn’t her intention to fall asleep in this house, but her strength to get up left her. In the end she let the fatigue catch her.

By the time she rose, Scarlett knew she had been asleep for a while; the sun was beaming light into the room and it was late morning.

Still unable to move, she rang the bell and soon came in Candice, her maid

“Yes, Miss. Do you want me to bring you breakfast?”

“What about Viktor?”

“He’s at work.”

“Then I’ll eat it.”

Candice smiled faintly at her words.

After a while, she brought breakfast on a silver tray. There were croissants, lemon butter cream, cherry Danish, and fresh milk.

Scarlett looked at the tray, recalling her early marriage. The cherry Danish she ate here was so immaculate, that she wanted to bring it to her brother. She used to store away some secretly.

Most of the time, her schedule as Viktor Dumfelt’s was party-like social events; except for that, shopping was all she had to do.

Viktor usually wore what Blight gave him, and he wasn’t easily dissatisfied or picky. So Scarlett went shopping and picked out fancy suits of her taste. He wore them without complaint.

As she thought about it, there was not much affection. If others didn’t want to receive his love, it was an ideal life for them.

Scarlett tore her favourite Danish wide open and put it in her mouth. As she ate, Candice opened her mouth.

“Do you remember Polly, Miss?”

“Well, I fixed her watch. Cherry Danish is the best.”

Candice said, smiling, pleased at her words.

“Polly baked all the bread today. Her pride is Cherry Danish, but the Master doesn’t eat it which saddens her.”

“How come? It’s delicious.”

“We don’t understand either. When you told us to bake Danish, we made a mountainful and ate it together. Polly’s Danish is the best.”

“That’s for sure. And it was really fun to eat together.”

“I know. It was so much fun….”

When Candice began to talk about what had happened among the others while Scarlett was away, Polly, peeking from behind the door, abruptly entered.

Polly had requested Candice to ask her first, saying that Scarlett might not remember her because she was a kitchen maid.

“Miss, it’s baked well today, right?” Polly asked confidently.

“Of course. It’s been a while since I ate it, so it tastes even better! Oh, let’s eat together.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Candice’s story was amusing. It’s been a while since I’ve been here, so tell me everything. It’ll be fun.”

As Scarlett spoke, she pushed the Danish and croissants towards them and the girls laughed and giggled, for the first time in a long time.

At first, Scarlett, from a humble family and an orphan, was not welcomed, but at some point, she thought that there was no employer like Scarlett who understood the minds of working people.

//humble family LOL. If the servants think she’s from a humble family everyone else must be beggars TOT

Just as friends of her age gathered, Scarlett, the five maids who served her, and Polly, the kitchen maid, gathered to talk about how they were doing after almost a year. They continued their chatter and laughter until the afternoon.

Then the door opened carefully. When Scarlett turned around, surprisingly, Andrei stood there.

“Mr Andrei?”

The maids all recognised and looked pleased. He was also one of the servants of the Dumfelt family.

“How did you get here?” Scarlett asked, rising.

“What are you asking? You know why I’m here.”

“You want me to work?”

“If you can’t come, let me know. I’ll keep the store closed. But you seem to have recovered.”

“I will go.”

Scarlett got up before Andrei nagged.

She stumbled, and Andrei held out his arm. Scarlett grabbed his arm and walked on.

“Even if you rest, rest at home. We have to succeed.”

“I don’t think I will be that successful...”

“You shouldn’t think like that. People should be ambitious.”

“I told you to give up.”

“Wait and see; you’ll be the boss of a big business.”

He was a difficult employee to keep up with.

It was a mystery as to why Scarlett asked Andrei to go with her. It was spontaneous but to her at the moment she thought wouldn’t regret that decision.

When she tried to leave the Dumfelt family with Andrei, the maids spoke anxiously.

“Why don’t you greet the Master before you leave?”

“He’s not a person who concerns himself over greetings.”

Scarlett said and grabbed the handle of a large leather suitcase that the maids had taken care of. But she couldn’t lift it from the ground, and eventually, Andrei lifted it with one hand.
