Chapter 29.3 - So-Called Humanity (3/3)

Even after the entire gang had been killed and the air was filled with a strong smell of blood, the tortured women and old people in the back hadn’t come back to their senses yet. They couldn’t believe that the demons who had been lording over them had just died.

It wasn’t until Zhao Sihui untied the ropes on them that they finally recovered from their trance. They started crying and screaming, rushing towards the men lying on the ground, biting their flesh and smashing their heads with stones.

Some of them simply stood on the same spot and cried, while others went to hug their bruised daughters, and their entire family huddled together in tears.

It was the same for the exceptionally beautiful girl. Her soulless eyes finally had some light in them when her mother hugged her tightly and covered her body with her clothes.

She tugged at the corner of her mouth numbly and felt relieved.

Ah, it’s great that my mother has been saved. I don’t have to live for anyone anymore.

The girl smiled, revealing a strangely beautiful expression on her face. She looked at the hard walls and shelves around her, and then ran into the shelf without hesitation. The sharp iron frame deeply dented her forehead, which showed how determined she was to die.

The middle-aged woman cried even louder. She frantically hugged her daughter as the girl’s beautiful eyes gradually dimmed until her breathing stopped.

The woman screamed, cursing the men who did this to them as well as the hopeless world.

""

She had been captured since the beginning of the apocalypse. She couldn’t do anything as her daughter was brutally violated. And now as she once again helplessly watched as her daughter sought death in this cold supermarket, she completely fell apart in hopeless despair.

The mutated animals in the apocalypse might not have been enough to make her lose hope, but this place was the real hell.

The Zhao siblings’ hearts ached as they witnessed the scene. They even thought that killing the scums wasn’t sufficient to calm their anger. How should ordinary people survive in this world? Did they even have any hope of survival?

Once the thought was formed, it weighed heavily in their hearts. The siblings took deep breaths and walked out of the supermarket.

The black wolf was happily tearing the corpse apart with its claws. The corpse was its ‘trophy’. Despite the fact that the corpse was extremely smelly, it didn’t prevent the wolf from playing with it.

Yin Yiliu didn’t participate in the battle. In fact, she didn’t even see much of the tragic scenes because she was shielded by Jin Yang the entire time. Her ears, however, could hear the crying of the men and women. When they cried, her heart was filled with panic and bewilderment.

She jumped down and stuffed her space with whatever usable supplies she could find in the supermarket, including bottled water, beverages, and various vacuum-packed food and snacks.

After The Second Fog, the space in her cheeks had also grown in size, allowing her to store more things. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to fit in all the supplies from the supermarket.

After she finished scavenging, with the help of the Zhao siblings, she left enough food and water for the rescuees before following Jin Yang out of the supermarket.

Jin Yang and the others knew that the evolved people in the supermarket weren’t very strong, and that even Qin Fuhai’s team could defeat them. They believed that there were many more such groups in the apocalypse, and it was impossible that no one was aware of their evildoings.

The surviving evolved people in the city knew about this, but no one came to rescue these tortured ordinary people. If any one of them even had a little kindness in their hearts, they wouldn’t be in this situation now.

Perhaps they thought that it was not worth offending a group of evolved people for a group of old and weak ordinary people, or perhaps similar things were happening in their territories, or perhaps they had long since separated themselves from ordinary people…

No matter what the situation was, Jin Yang and his teammates had been forced to catch a glimpse of the cruelest sides of the apocalypse.

That was human nature.

When they were about to continue their journey, the mood in the car was very depressing. Zhao Sihui pursed her lips tightly, Zhao Qiyang shrank into the front passenger seat with a tired expression, and Yin Yiliu was also heavy-hearted.

Only Jin Yang maintained a cold face the entire time. It was as if he was completely unaffected by the incident.

Yin Yiliu understood that Jin Yang’s strong mentality was what they should be having in the apocalypse. Instead of being a saint who sympathized with the world, they should be focusing on their own survival, but she couldn’t be indifferent, nor could the Zhao siblings.

As if Jin Yang could sense what the little rabbit was thinking, he gently stroked her back to comfort her.

Before the car started, the black wolf at the back wagged its tail and rubbed the blood from his paws onto the ground.

It had played so much that there were bloodstains all over its paws. Its feelings were hurt when it saw the disdain in Jin Yang’s eyes, so it had been licking its grievances alone behind the car.

At that moment, it heard movements approaching them and cast a cautious glance in the direction of the supermarket entrance.

It was a young woman who was running towards them, one of the people who was rescued by the Zhao siblings.

“Wait! Wait a minute!” she yelled. She was a little frightened when she saw the black wolf behind the car.

They noticed the woman but they didn’t know why she called out to them. Jin Yang had a gut feeling that she didn’t stop them to express her gratitude.

The girl saw that the car window was rolled down. She glanced at the men and women who were in clean clothes in the car, took a deep breath, and asked, “C-can you let me join you?”

When she saw these people kill those monsters easily, she had known that they were all very strong evolved people. She wouldn’t be able to survive on her own in this dangerous world where mutated animals hunt for humans everywhere.

Either she would be eaten or couldn’t escape the fate of being bullied again.

So the girl plucked up the courage to stop these people and beg.

“Can you take me in? I can do anything.”

 “No.”

Jin Yang flatly rejected her. He was so handsome that people couldn’t hate him even when he coldly turned them down.

He allowed the Zhao siblings to show momentary kindness, but he wasn’t a garbage collector, nor was he running a shelter. How could he save everyone he saw? Furthermore, this girl asked for protection. Why should he protect her?

Because she could cry a lot? Because she could eat a lot?

The girl still wanted to plead, but Jin Yang instructed Zhao Sihui to roll up the car window. When she tried to beg some more, the black wolf grinned threateningly at her, and she didn’t dare to approach them any longer.

She stood at the roadside blankly. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and resentment grew in her heart…

The author has something to say: My writing skill may be quite lacking. I’m not sure if I was able to portray the depressing feeling…
