“Except one thing,” Yan Qing Chi looked at him, solemn with every word, “Since we’ve decided to get married, then the matters before our marriage should end here. Whether it’s me or you, regardless of who we’ve liked before our marriage or who we’ve gotten involved with,  since we’re getting married then we must turn the page on these matters. Our marriage does not concern the two of us, but both the Jiang and Yan households as well as Qiqi. So generally, no matter what happens, I won’t pursue the matter nor will I divorce you. However,” Yan Qing Chi firmly declared, “if you develop feelings for another person during our marriage or are somewhat involved, I don’t care if you know that person before we got married or after, I will not be in the same building as you ever again. At that time, I hope that we can have an amicable divorce.”

“Why aren’t you concerned that it’ll be you who develop feelings for someone else or rekindle an old relationship?” Jiang Mo Chen countered.

When Yan Qing Chi heard him mention rekindling an old relationship, he knew that Jiang Mo Chen had investigated him before as he had expected. And that he knew about the Original Owner’s past with Li Xin Ran. He paused and asked, “Do you think that you’re sufficiently outstanding?”

”Of course.” Jiang Mo Chen replied confidently.

“Then that’s it.” Yan Qing Chi leaned against the chair, nonchalantly expressing, “Since you’re sufficiently outstanding, and I’m confronted with you every day, why would I still develop feelings for someone else?”

Jiang Mo Chen was startled by his rhetorical question. These words……Why does it seem like he’s flirting with him……?

Yan Qing Chi patted his shoulder, “Don’t overthink it. When it’s time to develop feelings, it’s useless to talk about it now. When you’re not supposed to develop feelings, then it’s all the more a waste of your words to say these now. It’s best to remember what I said, the matters of the past come to an end here. In the future, don’t look back and don’t do anything that will wrong the other. Think of it as giving Qiqi a normal environment to grow up in. Even if there’s no love between us, we can still create a peaceful and warm facade, got it?”

Jiang Mo Chen reached up and removed his hand, “Rest assured. Qiqi is my son, I care more about him than you do.”

“That couldn’t be any better.” Yan Qing Chi finished what he wanted to say and didn’t stay any longer. He said goodbye to Jiang Mo Chen, got out of the car, and started walking towards his block.

Jiang Mo Chen watched him walk further and further away from his car. He furrowed his brow. Yan Qing Chi’s silhouette was very good-looking. Not only was it good-looking, but it had a sort of tranquil calmness and easy confidence. As he watched silently, he thought of their conversation just now. It was hard for him to link the person he met to the dumb and troublesome image of Yan Qing Chi that he had from the collected data. For a moment, he was doubtful. What kind of personality did this person actually have? Did he really agree to get married with him (JMC) for that 50 million?

What Yan Qing Chi said came to his mind again:  ‘I’m confronted with you every day, why would I still develop feelings for someone else?’ Jiang Mo Chen suddenly felt agitated. He (YQC) couldn’t have feelings for him (JMC), right?

This notion didn’t have the chance to sprout before he pressed it back down into the dirt. It didn’t matter to him whether Yan Qing Chi liked him or not. Then, since he didn’t like Yan Qing Chi, there was no need for him to think too much of himself and guess someone else’s intentions.

He shook off these thoughts and—the instant that Yan Qing Chi entered his block— maneuvered the car around to head home. He didn’t need to nor did he want to rack his brains for Yan Qing Chi. They were solely joining up to pass their days, each party would take what they need. There was no need to demand that much.

Soon, Yan Qing Chi obtained a marriage certificate with Jiang Mo Chen on a bright and sunny day. The marriage certificate was very red, with no difference from the marriage certificates that he’d seen before he transmigrated. He looked at the marriage certificate in his hands and heaved a long sigh.

Jiang Mo Chen looked at him, “What, you regret it?”

“Well, no. I was merely rueful that my brief but very delightful single life has come to an end just like this. Have you not heard before? Marriage is the graveyard of love. We……”

“We have no love between us.” Jiang Mo Chen interrupted, reminding him.

“That’s even scarier,” Yan Qing Chi looked at him, “For a normal marriage, it’s just a graveyard. For us, it’s a whole plot of deserted graves, with no end in sight!”

Jiang Mo Chen: ……

“Hey, do you want to drink together with me, to lament for a moment the happiness of the single life that has left us?” Yan Qing Chi asked.

They had interacted for a couple of days now over this period of time. Compared to when they first got to know each other, they had become more familiar with each other—to the point that Jiang Mo Chen had already shed his mild-mannered image and exposed the not-so-beautiful interior underneath his beautiful appearance.

Sure enough, when Jiang Mo Chen heard his invitation, he snorted, “No time.”

Yan Qing Chi felt that he quite missed the Jiang Mo Chen from when they first met. At the very least, he would put up a mild-mannered facade. Not like now, when he was not afraid of the consequences of revealing his indifferent nature.

He acted like he was astonished, looking at the person in the driver’s seat in disbelief, “Today is the day that we’ve collected our marriage certificate, you know? What happened to ‘I will fulfill the duty and responsibility that a husband should fulfill, and do my utmost to cooperate with your thoughts and needs’?” Yan Qing Chi shook his head as he said ruefully, “As expected, all good-looking men will lie.”

Jiang Mo Chen watched his performance apathetically, “When you’re saying these words, you can look at your own face first in the mirror.”

“I’m not the same,” Yan Qing Chi retorted, unperturbed, “I never lie. See, I told you that I agree to marry you and so we did.” He raised the marriage certificate in his hand.

Jiang Mo Chen felt helpless, “Where are we going?”

“You yourself want to go out to have a fun time and you’re asking me where we’re going? Of course to send me home.”

Jiang Mo Chen rolled his eyes at him, starting the car to drive home.

When they arrived at the neighborhood, Yan Qing Chi unbuckled his seatbelt. As he prepared to get out of the car, he saw that Jiang Mo Chen had also unbuckled his seatbelt, “What, did you leave something at home?”

“Yeah, I left alcohol at home.”

Yan Qing Chi nodded without thinking much of it, then suddenly processed what he had said. Wait, does this mean that he……agreed to accompany him to drink?

He turned and asked probingly, “Did you leave something else at home?”

“What?”

“Me, duh!” Yan Qing Chi pointed at himself.

Jiang Mo Chen was amused by him. He didn’t say anything, declining to comment.

Yan Qing Chi knew that he had guessed right. He got out of the car, closed the door, and gave him a good-looking grin, “I retract my previous words. You’re not that bad—like me, our appearance and moral character are directly proportional.”

Jiang Mo Chen closed the car door and looked at him, “No need. You and I are completely different,” He pointed at Yan Qing Chi and then at himself, “We’re people of two different paths, got it?”

“Got it.” Yan Qing Chi answered half-heartedly.

He felt that Jiang Mo Chen seemed to be more reasonable than he imagined, and more unwilling to admit things than he imagined1.

“Next time I can teach Qiqi how to draw ducks.”

“What did you say?” Jiang Mo Chen asked.

“I was talking about Qiqi’s drawing class. What, do you want to attend?”

Jiang Mo Chen gave a cold snort, adequately using his eyes to express his dissatisfaction.

Yan Qing Chi felt that this appearance of his was quite amusing. He bumped his arm, “Are you really not going to attend? One against two small group lessons, private tutoring for free, guaranteeing teaching and acquisition of the skill. If you don’t acquire the skill, you can continue to attend class.”

Jiang Mo Chen stopped in his tracks.

“Why’d you stop?” Yan Qing Chi wondered.

“I’m afraid that the smell of alcohol will be so strong that it will affect Teacher Yan’s teaching. Teacher Yan had better drink alone.”

“Don’t,” Yan Qing Chi pulled him, “There’s no meaning in drinking alone, I prefer drinks paired with a beauty2.”

Jiang Mo Chen pulled a mirthless smile.

" "

“Don’t worry, Teacher Yan doesn’t have class today.” Yan Qing Chi promised, “Believe me.”

Jiang Mo Chen looked up to the sky, speechless. He continued walking without a word. Yan Qing Chi quickly caught up to him and entered the elevator with him.

Footnotes

死鸭子嘴硬 (sǐyāzizuǐyìng) – the dead duck’s mouth/bill is tough/hard. This means that someone is unwilling to admit their mistake/change of mind. A duck’s bill is hard, and it remains hard in death. This phrase is used to describe someone who is being very stubborn. Even when they mess up or are wrong, they refuse to admit it and insist otherwise. Moreover, people who had no grounds and whose reasons for arguing were unfounded and unreasonable are described as “dead ducks with hard mouths.” This is a lyric reference to the song “ 一人饮酒醉” (Drinking Alone)
