Thank you for the kofis and the support! I struggled with describing the claw machine (UFO catcher). Just let me know if anything’s not clear. – Daed.

Not far off from them was a row of claw machines. As Yan Qing Chi glanced over, he noticed that the two claw machines that were off to the side were smaller than the rest with a different setup. They seemed to be specifically designed for kids to play.

He asked Qiqi, “Do you want to catch plush toys?”

Qiqi moved closer to see, then pointed at a white puppy inside the machine.

“You like this one?” Yan Qing Chi confirmed.

Qiqi nodded his head slightly.

Yan Qing Chi handed the game tokens in his hand to him, “Put this token into this slot, then use this joystick to catch the toy.” He instructed.

Qiqi did as he said, inserting the token and then beginning to catch the plush toys. But, since he had never really played before, the claw machine’s claw shook a couple of times. It barely touched it, and then time ran out.

Qiqi raised his head at Yan Qing Chi in puzzlement.

Yan Qing Chi helped him insert another token. “One more time.”

Qiqi gripped the joystick and tried again, but he didn’t catch anything.

Yan Qing Chi scrutinized the toys inside the claw machine and pointed out a little turtle that seemed to be easier to catch, “Try to catch this one.”

Qiqi obediently released the claw to catch the turtle. However, as soon as the claw lifted the toy, it fell back into the pile.

He didn’t want to admit defeat. He turned back to look at Yan Qing Chi, “One more time.”

“Okay.” Yan Qing Chi smiled as he inserted another token into the slot.

Qiqi maneuvered the joystick, his gaze fixed on that little turtle. Once he caught it, he carefully brought the toy towards the drop box. Yet just as the claw was almost there, the claw lost its grip and the turtle fell.

“One more time.” Qiqi continued to say.

He released his grip on the joystick, clapped his hands, then let out a short huff. Then he started another round with rapt attention.

Yan Qing Chi observed as he pursed his lips, his eyes pretty much glued to the claw machine. He too was unwittingly anxious due to Qiqi’s influence.

Finally, the claw hung above the exit. Qiqi swiftly pressed on the release button and the turtle dropped straight down. He happily crouched down to retrieve the little turtle.

This turtle wasn’t big, merely as big as his palm. Qiqi held up the turtle, flipping it back and forth as he studied it closely. Then, he turned around and held out the turtle.

Yan Qing Chi saw that he stretched his hand out towards him with the turtle and asked, “For me?”

Qiqi nodded, a pair of cat eyes curving, his eyes filled with happiness.

Yan Qing Chi accepted the turtle and squeezed it, “It’s very cute. Qiqi is amazing.”

Qiqi smiled bashfully, dipping his head.

“Since you’ve gifted me a plush toy, I will also give you one.” Yan Qing Chi declared.

He looked at this row of claw machines and asked Qiqi, “Which plush toy do you like? Or do you want that little puppy?”

Qiqi lifted his head and looked carefully, then pointed towards a little white sheep that was relatively large.

“OK.” Yan Qing Chi said and inserted a token.

He shook the joystick to get a feel of the sensation, then directly made a grab for that little sheep.

Qiqi immediately pressed closer, his face up against the claw machine as he watched anxiously. Then, he watched as the little sheep fell.

He raised his head to look at Yan Qing Chi dejectedly. Yan Qing Chi smiled reassuringly, “It’s fine, you’ll catch it next time.”

Qiqi nodded, giving a resolute grunt of agreement (“En.”).

After one attempt, Yan Qing Chi had pretty much gotten the hang of this claw machine. So he began to unleash his acquired claw machine skill developed from years of experience. Soon, he caught that sheep.

He handed the sheep over to Qiqi, “You gave me a little turtle, so I’ll give you a little sheep. This is for you.”

Qiqi was immersed in the pleasant surprise of the successful capture of the little sheep. For a moment, he didn’t process what had happened and stared at him foolishly.

Yan Qing Chi poked his face, “Is there anything else that you wanted?”

Qiqi immediately peered inside the claw machine and pointed at the little bear inside.

Yan Qing Chi naturally helped him catch the little bear.

Qiqi then pointed at the rabbit inside.

While Yan Qing Chi was helping him catch the rabbit, he told him, “This is the last one. Otherwise, we’ll have too many and we wouldn’t be able to take them all home.”

Qiqi obediently responded with a face full of contentment.

Yan Qing Chi caught the rabbit and handed it over to him. Seeing the kid beaming happily with his two hands struggling to hug three plush toys, he felt that it was pretty good like this.

There were too many plush toys here, but he had no plans of catching too many for Qiqi. Most of the time, having more didn’t mean that it was good; what was suitable was still the best.

With plush toys in hand, they headed over to the section on the side. Because there were multiple games that the adults could not participate in, Qiqi chose ones that were simple and which family members could do together.

He even drew a drawing, causing his clothes and hands to get messy. He looked at Yan Qing Chi nervously. Yan Qing Chi reached out his own paint-covered hands and lined them up with his, saying in a low voice, “So dirty.”

Qiqi continued looking at him, Yan Qing Chi smiled, “C’mon, let’s go wash our hands.”

After playing for a day, they were hungry. Yan Qing Chi sent Jiang Mo Chen a WeChat message asking if he was going to go home to eat.

Jiang Mo Chen looked at his WeChat and replied: 【No.】

“Do you want to eat hot pot or fried vegetables?”

He thought about it, “Or would you rather go eat hamburgers and fried chicken1?”

Qiqi didn’t know how he should reply to his questions; hence, he could only quietly look at him.

Yan Qing Chi was usually very patient with him. Before his transmigration, he had experience handling kids. Thus, he understood better than Jiang Mo Chen to wait when he was facing Qiqi.

He rattled off his options to Qiqi again, “Hot pot, fried vegetables, or fried chicken and hamburgers? Which does Qiqi like?”

Qiqi didn’t know how to answer. He looked at Yan Qing Chi, his mouth clamped tight. He was afraid that his answer would be what Yan Qing Chi didn’t like. He didn’t know what Yan Qing Chi liked, so he didn’t know what to choose.

He recalled what Orphanage Director-mommy had told him when he was leaving with Jiang Mo Chen, “Be good. You have to listen to Daddy Jiang’s words. Don’t talk back, understand?”

Qiqi nodded, “I understand.”

“You have to be clever. Do the things that Daddy Jiang likes. Don’t do what he doesn’t like.”

“En,” he nodded obediently.

He knew what he should do. He had heard Little Jing tell her playmates tearfully that she shouldn’t have been so chatty. In the beginning, her new Mommy had intended to take her away. However, because she was too talkative, Mommy discovered that she was not the child that she wanted. And so, she did not take her away from the orphanage.

Little Jing had cried so miserably. As he heard her cry, Qiqi also felt very miserable.

He had laid his head down on the table and thought to himself that he would definitely not be like Little  Jing. He made a resolution to control himself and not speak too much. He would be the child that his new Mommy and Daddy would like. He would definitely leave this orphanage.2

But now, he gazed at Yan Qing Chi without any clue what the man might like. He didn’t know what he should say to get Yan Qing Chi to like him.

Footnotes

I suspect this might actually be “chicken nuggets” but I’m not sure. This was a flashback from the part about Qiqi recalling what the Orphanage Director told him to this point.
