The next day, Yan Qing Chi woke Qiqi up very early in the morning and prepared to head out for their trip to the amusement park.

As a public figure, Jiang Mo Chen applied makeup and put on glasses to disguise himself. When he emerged from the room, Yan Qing Chi was floored. He walked up to scrutinize the person before him, “Hey handsome fella, who’re you?”

“Who do you think I am?”

Yan Qing Chi didn’t answer. He prodded Qiqi, “Qiqi,  who do you think he is?”

“It’s Father.” Qiqi said very seriously.

“You can recognize him even in this state?” Yan Qing Chi was quite surprised, “You have a discerning eye.”1

Jiang Mo Chen felt helpless, “I’ve dressed up like this and taken him outside before. He was unfamiliar with it at first, but soon became accustomed to it. He’s seen it two or three times already, how could he not remember?”

Yan Qing Chi turned around and assessed the other man again. No matter how he looked at the person standing before him, he only felt that the other was different from the Jiang Mo Chen that he had previously encountered. The change of style in his clothes made him seem younger and spirited. Some changes were made to his features, diminishing his dashing, handsome features to appear clean and delicate.2 On top of that, he had a pair of black-rimmed glasses which seemed extremely proper and gave him a scholarly air. It was indeed very difficult to make the connection between a Jiang Mo Chen who looked like this with the one on the television screen.

“Did you look like this when you were in school?” Yan Qing Chi asked, curious.

“What are you thinking?” Jiang Mo Chen looked at him, “This is just a disguise. I was much more handsome in my school days than I am now.”

“Is that so? Then later when we come back, I want to see your pictures from your school days.”

“Dream on.”

After Jiang Mo Chen denied him, he pulled Qiqi up, “Let’s go.”

Sheng Fei Theme Park3 was X City’s largest amusement park. It never lacked for visitors, especially during winter break.

Jiang Mo Chen looked at the crowd in front of him, “I told you that we should let Sun Sheng4 close the park for a day, but you wouldn’t let me. Now look at this crowd.”

“What do you know? The fun in the amusement park is in the crowd, which makes the place so much more exuberant. Anyway, didn’t Sun Sheng give you the VIP passes? It’s not like we have to get in line. Don’t you think that it’s even more fun when everyone else has to wait in line while we pass by them in the VIP line and play immediately?”

“So, this is the reason why you establish your joy in other people’s suffering?”

“Aiyah, it’s not like I’m harming anyone. As long as you’re willing to pay the price, anyone could be a VIP. We got our VIP based on our own merits. Let’s go.” Yan Qing Chi waved his hand, “Pick a ride and let’s go play.”

Alas, despite Yan Qing Chi’s high expectations, playing in the amusement park with and without a child were two very different experiences. Yan Qing Chi sat on a wooden horse in the merry-go-round. As he moved along with the up-and-down movement of his pegasus, he looked over at the nearby rollercoaster ride mournfully. 5 He would never have thought that there would come a day where the rollercoaster ride could be so close yet so far, just like how he would never have thought that at his age, he would accompany Qiqi to ride the merry-go-round.

Just as Yan Qing Chi was mourning, he caught sight of Jiang Mo Chen standing nearby, his hands shoved in his pockets with a bored expression on his face. When he saw Yan Qing Chi and Qiqi were revolving in his direction, he dug out his phone and was about to take their picture. Yan Qing Chi turned his head around gloomily, and was met with the sight of Qiqi watching him ride his little pegasus happily from his seat on the back of a horse.

“Are you having fun?” He asked.

Qiqi nodded.

Yan Qing Chi smiled and ruffled his hair, “As long as you’re having fun.”

When they descended from the merry-go-round, Jiang Mo Chen showed Qiqi the pictures that he had taken. Qiqi wondered, “What about Daddy? Did you not catch Daddy on camera?”

Jiang Mo Chen swiped across several photos until he found the Yan Qing Chi which he had inadvertently caught on camera. In the picture, Yan Qing Chi had his head down, only showing half of his side-profile. His features were still, which made him appear very gentle.

After Qiqi reviewed all the pictures, he raised his head and asked him, “Are there no pictures of Father?”

Yan Qing Chi immediately had an idea, “Qiqi, you take your father to ride the merry-go-round again. Daddy will take pictures of you two.”

As soon as Qiqi heard that he could ride the merry-go-round again, he instantly looked at Jiang Mo Chen with sparkling eyes.

Jiang Mo Chen: ……

“Maybe your daddy should be the one to go with you.”

“Qiqi wants your picture. If I went with him, there still wouldn’t be your picture. So, go.”

“Shut up, you.”

“Just surrender, you.”

Jiang Mo Chen was speechless. But as soon as he looked down, he met Qiqi’s expectant gaze. Jiang Mo Chen practically had no other choice. He glowered at Yan Qing Chi, “You with your dramatics.”6

“I can’t compare to you7.”

“I’ve noticed that you’re quite good at speaking. With every sentence I say, you can return ten.”

“Perhaps we have an especially good rapport with each other!”8

“Perhaps you’re extraordinarily punch-worthy.”9

“Domestic violence is wrong. It will severely traumatize the child.”

Jiang Mo Chen: ……I feel like I’m the one who’s almost developing a trauma!

He glared at Yan Qing Chi then put on his hat, scooping Qiqi up into his arms to ride the merry-go-round again.

Yan Qing Chi stayed put. With a carefree expression on his face, he observed Jiang Mo Chen’s lifeless appearance on the merry-go-round and felt his mood extraordinarily lighten. He took out his phone and waved it at Jiang Mo Chen. The other man glanced at him apathetically and turned around. Yan Qing Chi didn’t care. He took pictures in nonstop succession. And in the end, he managed to take some decent pictures.

When Qiqi came down from the merry-go-round and saw that he and Jiang Mo Chen simultaneously appeared in a picture, his eyes curved as he smiled in satisfaction.

Yan Qing Chi moved his hand and edited the three of them together into one picture. Qiqi pointed at his phone and declared happily, “Daddy, me, and Father—the three of us.”

Yan Qing Chi nodded, “A family of three.”

Qiqi grunted in agreement.

“Let’s go,” Yan Qing Chi pulled him up, “I’ll take you to go play the bumper cars.”

Compared to the merry-go-round, the bumper cars were truly an interesting ride. Yan Qing Chi and Qiqi got in a car while Jiang Mo Chen was in a car by himself. They didn’t go bother anyone else, only targeting each other and going to bump the other fiercely. Qiqi was very young and light. Every time they collided, he would be slightly raised into the air.10 After two or three times, he noticed this matter and couldn’t help but giggle out loud. He looked forward to the collisions of the two bumper cars.

The time for the bumper car ride wasn’t that long. Qiqi still wanted to play after having played once.

He looked at Yan Qing Chi, wanting to open his mouth to bring it up yet feeling rather shy about it. On the other hand, Yan Qing Chi noticed his hesitation and prompted, “Is there anything wrong?”

Jiang Mo Chen instantly stopped and looked at him.

When Qiqi saw that they both stopped in their tracks, he instantly became even more shy.

“Is it that you still want to play?” Jiang Mo Chen guessed.

Qiqi nodded, asking quietly, “May I?”

Jiang Mo Chen ruffled his hair, “Of course you may.”

Qiqi immediately lit up.

The three of them returned to the bumper car arena. This time, Jiang Mo Chen held Qiqi.

Qiqi told him quietly, “Father, when the two cars collide, Qiqi will be propelled into the air.”

“Is being propelled into the air fun or not fun?” Jiang Mo Chen couldn’t tell if he liked it or not.

The child looked at him with curved eyes, “Fun. If Qiqi bounces in the air, then I will be a little spring. Bang, shoot, xiu!”11

Jiang Mo Chen listened to the child’s vivid and colorful description with a smile tugging at his lips, “Then Qiqi has to sit properly, we don’t want you to bounce out of your seat. Your daddy and I would have to go find you.”

“I won’t.” Qiqi replied to him very seriously, “I’m only going to be propelled this much.” He measured out a distance with fingers, “Just this much, I won’t be ejected.”

“That’s good then.”

Though he said that, when Qiqi got in the bumper car, he seemed to really be afraid of flying out. He held onto Jiang Mo Chen’s arm as he said quietly, “Good luck, Father.”

“Alright.”

Soon, a new round of collisions began.

Qiqi found entertainment in the bumper cars attraction. After their second time was done, he timidly expressed his desire to play it again. Yan Qing Chi and Jiang Mo Chen were happy and gratified that he was finally able to tell them his thoughts, and so they accompanied him two more times.

When they were done playing, Yan Qing Chi noticed that there was a place selling popcorn and coke nearby. He proposed that Jiang Mo Chen take Qiqi to find a seat on a bench first while he went to stand in line.

Jiang Mo Chen glanced at the crowd near the popcorn and agreed. He pulled Qiqi along to take a seat at the rest area and asked the child what he wanted to play next. Just as Qiqi was mulling over the question, Jiang Mo Chen’s phone rang.

He picked it up without much thought, “Hello?”

The other party paused for a moment. Then, a voice finally came through the speaker, “Mo Chen, it’s me.”

Jiang Mo Chen was stunned. It was Yuan Ming Xu.

Footnotes

The literal translation here is “Fire Eyes Golden Pupils” (火眼金睛). This term means that the individual is able to see through disguises/illusions and has keen eyesight. This was the best way that I could think of to translate 清秀. If you use this term to describe a male, it usually means that they look very clean and proper. Ummm like the pure aura? Scholarly aura? He’s still good-looking, just a different kind of good-looking now. 盛飞游乐场 The “Sheng”  in “Sheng Fei Theme Park” (盛飞游乐场) is the same character as the one in JMC’s friend’s name (Sun Sheng 孙盛). Wow. Some liberties were taken from the original Chinese raw with these three sentences. I tried. The Chinese here was “就你戏多。”Literally, this translates as “Just you movie/drama a lot.” Basically, this is saying that the other individual “has a lot of drama”/they are very dramatic. Not in a necessarily bad way though, just that the individual exhibits lots of theatrically exaggerated or overemotional behavior (dramatics). Another way that this could be translated is “Only you have a lot of movies/dramas.” This could be interpreted as sarcasm or a statement of the facts; it depends on the situational context.I think this is referring to both how many dramas/films JMC has as well as a comeback like “Nah, I’m no match to you and your dramatics” “可能是我们俩格外默契!” It’s hard to find a good translation for 默契. It means something like a tacit understanding, or like they are on the same page…Edit 7/8/21: I found the word “rapport”! I changed “Perhaps we’re deeply connected with each other!” to “Perhaps we have an especially good rapport with each other!” “欠打” – asking for a beating 弹 – this is the word that I struggled to translate in the context, and which you will see in various forms in the following sentences (e.g. raised, propelled, bounce, ejected, fly) because I couldn’t think of the best translation that worked. “好玩,弹起来棋棋就是小弹簧了。嘭,发射,咻!” The last “xiu” was kept in its pinyin form because I interpreted it as QQ describing the sound effect.
