Yan Qing Xi pursed her lips in frustration, “What do you think is the Jiang family’s problem? Is it because their family is more powerful now and their businesses are bigger, but we’re normal, so they’re looking down on us? They would go as far as to say that Jiang Mo Chen ‘likes men, not women’ and that they ‘can’t bear to lie to me‘, so they want to change the original engagement partner from me to you and let you two marry. What even is this? Shouldn’t he know by now if he likes boys or girls? Why did he have to say so now? And he even said to ‘let you go’ or whatever—are they trying to humiliate us?! ”

“Oh, then you’ve really misunderstood him,” Yan Qing Chi thought. Jiang Mo Chen had genuinely been unaware that he liked men. The reason why he noticed now was entirely because he met the Little White Lotus, and thus awakened to love for the first time.

The Little White Lotus was naturally this novel’s Shou. The Shou—this little white lotus—was petite and soft, weak enough to be pushed down easily. He would cry for no real reason. The Shou liked an upperclassman from when he was in school. Unfortunately, the upperclassman was a straight male. When the Shou offered up his heart and pitifully chased behind him, “crack”—it shattered into pieces. It was at this time when he was sobbing and picking up the heart to glue it back together that Jiang Mo Chen saw him.

Jiang Mo Chen was born in a wealthy elite family, and he was outstanding enough himself. When he was in school, he was the school grass1 and a top student. After graduation, he entered the entertainment circle. With his background and the innate acting skills that he possessed, he won the Gold Osmanthus Award for Best Male Lead when he was merely 27 years old and became an Gold Osmanthus Film Emperor.

He met countless males and females in his life. He certainly didn’t lack young and attractive people of both genders chasing after him and showing interest or cueing him. Yet Jiang Mo Chen acted like he was “blind”—until he met the Shou. Then it was like he was possessed. Who knew what aspect of the Shou attracted him? Nevertheless, the man rushed up to pamper him (Shou) anyway:

‘You don’t have a suitable role? I’ll help you.

You don’t have any magazine photoshoots? I’ll carry you.

You don’t have any ads to endorse? I’ll give you some of my own.’2

He all but personally promote the CP3 between him and the Little White Lotus himself.

Yet no matter what he did, the Shou—this complete white lotus—stayed true to his white lotus persona. On one hand, he relied on Jiang Mo Chen when he needed something, and yearned for the upperclassman when he didn’t. On the other hand, he cried and shouted, ‘Don’t be like this’, ‘I can’t be like this’, ‘I have someone I like’, or ‘Wahhhhh’.

Hence this whole scene where the Little White Lotus pursued his love out of the country while Jiang Mo Chen painfully decided to end things and settle down.

According to the original plot, the Original Owner rejected Jiang Mo Chen. Even if the latter didn’t have any feelings for the Original Owner, he was still kind of frustrated after being consecutively rejected. He sought comfort after getting drunk, and got in touch with the Little White Lotus again. When Little White Lotus learned that Jiang Mo Chen had planned to get married, he gave mixed signals. On one hand, he said that it was good that the film emperor was getting married. After all, how was there anyone who didn’t settle down? On the other hand, he said that he felt like he couldn’t persevere any longer—he might not have his own home in this lifetime.

How could Jiang Mo Chen bear for the one he loved to be so disheartened? He immediately declared that that wouldn’t happen. If Little White Lotus was willing, he could give him a home. Little White Lotus only smiled on the other end of the call, not giving a definite reply.

Ai. Yan Qing Chi heaved a long sigh. Those who knew were aware that this was the male lead; those who didn’t would have thought that this was a supporting male lead.

Yan Qing Chi felt like he was really too unlucky. He had just been sleeping at home when he suddenly transmigrated over. He only wanted to continue to be his clan’s Little Crown Prince4, so why was someone like him who was neither ambitious nor a go-getter chosen?

“Bro, what are you thinking?” Yan Qing Xi saw that he was lost in thought and poked him.

He turned to look at her, “Where’re mom and dad?”

Yan Qing Xi pointed towards the main bedroom, “They’re in there discussing what to do.”

“I’ll go take a look.” Yan Qing Chi got up and walked over.

Through the door, he could faintly make out the Yan couple’s conversation. Yan Qing Chi stood there and listened for a while. He heard Yan Mother say tearfully, “It’s all your fault. I already told you that you can’t trust that classmate of yours, but you wanted to believe in them. Now you’ve done it. 50 million! How are we supposed to pay that back? The Jiangs also said that they can’t marry Little Xi. How else will we pool together 50 million?”

“Maybe we can ask for a loan from them. Even if we aren’t able to become in-laws, we can be friends. After all, dad and Ol’ Jiang were so close.”

“If Ol’ Grandfather Jiang was still alive, what you said might work. However, Ol’ Grandfather Jiang has already been long gone. And even for a matter as important as the engagement, his parents didn’t come along. It was just Little Chen. Do you think their family wants to be friends with us?”

" "

“Then what should we do? We can’t really let Little Chi go and get married. It’s not like Little Chi likes men. Wouldn’t it be making things difficult for the child if he was to marry Little Chen?”

“Ai,” Father Yan sighed, “I’ll try to think about some other idea, see if there’s another way.”

Mother Yan seemed to be crying, the sound of sobbing could be heard from the room, “What should we do? How could we just happen to encounter this kind of matter?”

At this time, Yan Qing Chi remembered. That’s right. He had forgotten. In the original novel, the Original Owner’s parents were in debt. He heaved a helpless sigh in his heart. What else could they do? Marriage was undoubtedly the easiest and quickest route. That was five thousand million (50 million), not five thousand5. How could it be so easily had? If they didn’t have it, then would they really sit here and wait for the debt collectors to come to the door to have a battle of wits with them? It was fine if it was just him, but what if the other party did something towards Yan Qing Xi? As Yan Qing Chi thought of this, he decided it was better to just get married. Once he got married, he would borrow 50 million from Jiang Mo Chen. This way he would be able to resolve both his family’s matter and his own greatest lifetime matter. 6

The Original Owner had been “blind”, but he wasn’t. Jiang Mo Chen had the looks and the money. Aside for a moment of being “possessed” and “blind”, he didn’t have any major flaws. Anyway, if he got married to Jiang Mo Chen, then this novel’s plot line would be entirely offset. In that case, he would think of this place as another real universe and live his life properly.

As he thought about this, Yan Qing Chi turned and knocked on the door.

Amidst Father and Mother Yan’s surprise, he pushed the door open. He looked at the astonishment that hadn’t faded from the couple’s faces, observed Yan Mother’s reddened eyes, and gave a bright and cheerful smile as he asked, “I heard Little Xi say that her marriage partner wasn’t able to marry her anymore. Instead, he wanted to marry me?”

Mother Yan stood up, her expression unnatural as she stumbled over her words, “Little Xi was just speaking nonsense. Don’t-don’t listen to what she says.”

“Really?” Yan Qing Chi leaned against the door frame. “And here I was, planning to agree, too. Dad. Mom. In the past I was afraid that it would scare you guys, so I never said it before. To be honest, I’ve always been attracted to boys. I have no interest in girls.”

Mother Yan was shocked. Father Yan asked him again in disbelief, “What did you say?”

“I said, since I like men, and Jiang Mo Chen also likes men, then why don’t we just go with what they suggested and get married? His qualifications probably aren’t bad either. It’s not a bad match for me.”

Father Yan was frozen in shock.

“Are you serious?” Mother Yan asked carefully.

Yan Qing Chi nodded, “Yeah. Hey, I also just happen to be at the age to legally marry, so I can get married.”

Father and Mother Yan stared at him in a daze, at a loss for words.

Yan Qing Chi was still smiling—calm and composed, warm and relaxed. He reassured them, “You guys continue your discussion. I’m going to go see what we have in the kitchen. I learned some dishes filming a variety show, might as well show off in front of you guys.”

Father and Mother Yan looked at the closed door, then looked at each other. “Say, do you think that Little Chi heard the news and was afraid of us being troubled, so he said that?”

Father Yan pondered over the question for a moment, his expression troubled. “But our son isn’t that sensible.”

Mother Yan paused, then nodded in agreement, “That’s true. It’s already good enough that he didn’t ‘explode’. How could he be considerate of us to sacrifice himself? Then, he really does like men? And he also thought that Little Chen wasn’t that bad, so he’s willing?”

Father Yan heaved a sigh, “Who knows? Let’s see how it goes. If he really is willing, then…then…” he sighed again, taking a seat helplessly. “Then it is what it is. At least Little Chen has good qualities; he can be considered as a good choice.”

Mother Yan didn’t say anything. She wiped her tears in grief.  “What even is this?” she sighed as she silently began to cry again.

The author has something to say:

The background is that same-sex marriage is legal. Father and Mother Jiang are also willing, it’s just that the Gong didn’t let them come along. Gong and Shou will meet in the next chapter!

Footnotes

The most handsome male student in the school (in popular opinion)I decided to format this part differently than the raw (你没合适的角色,我帮你;你没杂志资源,我带你;你没广告代言,我把自己的代言分你几个;就差没直接下场和小白莲炒cp了。). I considered translating it in a style like the author’s: “You don’t have suitable roles, I’ll help you; you don’t have magazine photoshoots, I’ll carry you/take care of you; you don’t have endorsements, I’ll give you some of mine; he all but directly got involved in promoting his ship/cp with the Little White Lotus”. However, I wanted to make the tone of the first part (“You don’t have…?”) more apparent. I know that I read this part in a sarcastic or sardonic tone. I read it in a tone where it was like “Oh you don’t have this? Aww, poor baby.” (Not that those words are always said in a bad tone or meant in a bad way, but hopefully that helps convey my intentions across.)CP is the same as a “ship” for a pairing. It’s used to refer to couples/ships/pairings. 小太子(Xiao Taizi), Little Crown Prince,  the one who will inherit the family business.五千万呢,又不是五千块 – five thousand million (fifty million), not five thousand. There’s a one word/counter difference, like a difference in the amount of zeros in a number. This is repeating “resolving matters”: the matter of his family, and his own matter (major turning point in his life, e.g. marriage)
