Clearly I need to stop setting up flags for myself.

11/14/20: Correction made for JSX’s initials.

TLN for the chapter title: Spoiler

For the title of this chapter, the Chinese is ““因为我手上拿的剧本,可能是夜光剧本。”  When I looked up “夜光” (literally “night light”), the results I got said that it meant “luminous” or “noctilucent”. It sounded weird to me to describe the script as such since it seemed more like YQC was implying something more sexual. Hence, I chose to just translate it as “night-time script”.

Yan Qing Chi was quite surprised. Su Nuan was equally surprised.

Jiang Mo Chen noticed that neither of them answered his question; they only looked at him in surprise. He dipped his head to look at Su Nuan, “Did he bully you?”

Su Nuan was frozen in place. Then she shook her head fiercely, “No…No. We were rehearsing the dialogue.”

“Rehearsing the dialogue?”

“Yeah.” Yan Qing Chi said with a raised voice.

Su Nuan nodded, “I’m experiencing some trouble with my pre-velar and voiced velar nasal sounds.1 He’s teaching me the correct pronunciation.”

As soon as he heard this, Jiang Mo Chen finally understood the whole situation, “You go back first.” He said calmly.

Su Nuan nodded. Before she left, she didn’t forget to help say a few words in Yan Qing Chi’s defense, “He really didn’t bully me. He was just helping me.”

“I got it.”

Only then did Su Nuan quietly leave, though she couldn’t help but be worried about Yan Qing Chi.

Once she left, Jiang Mo Chen finally lifted his eyes to look at Yan Qing Chi. He was met with the sight of Yan Qing Chi looking at him as if he was debating whether to laugh or not.

“What kind of expression is that?”

Yan Qing Chi immediately laughed out loud. He approached Jiang Mo Chen, “I’m the one who should ask you that. What kind of expression was that? What were you thinking?”

Jiang Mo Chen was speechless, “Did you two know each other before?”

”Nope.”

“Then you’re quite sociable. How many days has it been? You guys are getting along so well.”

“Are you jealous?”

Jiang Mo Chen snorted, “I’m reminding you to watch your image.”

“The two of us are rehearsing lines in broad daylight. In a civilized society, there isn’t anything wrong with this kind of image, right?”
“It wouldn’t be so simple if you were caught on film.”

“Do you think I’m like you, where people care about every move you make? Do you know why she came to find me to run-through the script? It’s precisely because she thought that in this entire cast, besides me, everyone else is popular and influential. That’s why she could only pick me.”

“So, this is the reason why the two of you—a man and a woman—chose a quiet place like this to be alone together?

Yan Qing Chi was literally going to crack up because of how ridiculous he was behaving. The man denied that he was jealous, yet the sour scent in his words was so strong that it was almost visible.2 He was truly the textbook case of what was called ‘saying one thing but meaning another’.

“Anyway, she’s already gone so let’s not debate over this. Next time before we run-through the lines, I’ll definitely share my ‘location’ with you.”3

“There’s still a next time?”

“I mean, I already agreed. It’s not like I can go back on my word. ‘Sides, there are only so many people in this cast. I can find you, but who can she find?”

“Her role in the movie is Zhou Fang’s girlfriend. Naturally, she should go find Ji Si Xing.”

“She did. Ji Si Xing ignored her, so she came to find me.”

“Ji Si Xing ignored her?” Jiang Mo Chen asked in reply, “He shouldn’t have. He seemed like a pretty easy-going guy to me.”

“That was how Su Nuan phrased it. Oh, Su Nuan is that girl who just left.”

Jiang Mo Chen didn’t say anything.

Yan Qing Chi mused, “I don’t think she was lying to me, because she’s a little…” Yan Qing Chi tried to find the right words4, “……Naïve.”

“Naïve?”

“You may also interpret it as ‘sociable’ and ‘thoughtless’.” 5

Jiang Mo Chen chuckled.

“In any case, I don’t think she was lying.”

Jiang Mo Chen nodded, “That’s valid. Most people compared to you are pretty naïve.”

Yan Qing Chi smiled, “That’s why ‘most people’ don’t get married to you.”

Jiang Mo Chen, caught unawares by his retort, was at a loss for words, “Let’s go, it’s time to eat.”

After saying so, he strode off back to the set.

Yan Qing Chi caught up to him and asked, “So did you go out of your way to find me and remind me to eat?”

“No, I was strolling around before eating because I had nothing else to do.”

“Oh, and here I thought you were coming to catch us in the act (of cheating) before eating because you had nothing else to do.”

Jiang Mo Chen whipped his head around to glare at him. Yan Qing Chi laughed, “It’s fine, you have this right.”6

“No one would take you to be ‘mute’ if you don’t speak.”

“One more thing. Do you have time after our meal?”

“What do you want?”

“I want to rehearse with you.”

“Oh? You’re not going to find that girl?” Jiang Mo Chen raised his tone.

Hearing the quibbling in his speech, Yan Qing Chi reached out and grabbed his hand, “It’s not appropriate to find her.”

“Why not?”

“Because the script on my hands might be a night-time script.”

Jiang Mo Chen: ……

Jiang Mo Chen turned on his heels and walked away, but he had only taken two steps when he realized that Yan Qing Chi was still holding his hand.

“Let go.”

“Your ears are red.”

“Your ears are red!” Jiang Mo Chen said, and felt that his ears really did seem to burn a little.

He glared at Yan Qing Chi, deeply convinced that not only was Yan Qing Chi a troublemaker, he also loved to flirt with him. He is so young, how could he love to flirt with others so much? Flirt, flirt, flirt. Those who know, know that his surname is Yan. Those who don’t would probably think that his surname is Hu!7

“You’re not saying anything, so I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.”

“8 PM.” Jiang Mo Chen said gruffly, then shook his hand. As soon as Yan Qing Chi let go of him, the other man immediately turned around and left.

Jiang Mo Chen headed straight to a corner before he pulled out his phone and checked in the camera. Liar, his ears aren’t red. They’re clearly the same as before. He just knew that Yan Qing Chi must have been lying. This liar!

Yan Qing Chi and Jiang Mo Chen returned one after the other to the hotel that the production crew had reserved. It was soon 8PM after they had dinner. Yan Qing Chi exited his room, planning to go knock on Jiang Mo Chen’s door, yet he encountered Ji Si Xing.

“You’re…?” He asked, his eyes on the script in Yan Qing Chi’s hand.

“I’m on my way to find Chen-ge to rehearse our scenes. I have some scenes with him tomorrow.” Yan Qing Chi replied respectfully.

Ji Si Xing instantly smiled. He had just gone to find Jiang Mo Chen to rehearse their scenes. However, Jiang Mo Chen told him that he had something going on in a bit and declined. Who would have thought that this newcomer was also on his way to find Jiang Mo Chen?

Ji Si Xing scanned Yan Qing Chi up and down, a plan slowly forming in his heart, “Go on then.”

Having said so, he walked around Yan Qing Chi and continued to stride forward. He had already planned it all out. In a bit when Jiang Mo Chen rejected this newcomer, he would appear again and very benevolently profess that he could rehearse with him. This way, this newcomer would definitely be moved. At that time, he ought to idolize him (JSX) over Jiang Mo Chen.

Once Ji Si Xing thought of this possibility, he looked forward to what was to come. He and Jiang Mo Chen were the same age. Moreover, based on his birthday, he was older than the latter by a couple months. Yet because of seniority and positions in the industry, he had to curry favor with Jiang Mo Chen and call him “ge”. 8 This disgusted Ji Si Xing, yet he had no other alternative. Even though they were both cast members and popular celebrities, everyone seemed to only have eyes for Jiang Mo Chen. He was always their first priority.

Of course Ji Si Xing knew that this was what they ought to do. Nevertheless, he couldn’t stop himself from being envious. He took too long to become popular; he didn’t rise into his current position until last year when he met Le Yang Wen Hua’s little princess, Le Yang. It felt really good to be popular, to the point that he could scarcely remember his days when he wasn’t popular. But this time when he entered the production crew, in just a few days, it felt like he had gone back to the years when he was still considered unimportant. His manager would constantly exhort him again and again to build a good relationship with Jiang Mo Chen. Even Le Yang kept asking him about Jiang Mo Chen whenever she called.

Ji Si Xing felt envious; he felt an abhorrence for the other man—until he saw Yan Qing Chi just now. Suddenly, he thought, “Since it’s like this, why not find someone who hates Jiang Mo Chen like I do?” If there isn’t any, he’ll brainwash one. Yan Qing Chi is a newcomer. He can totally appear after he (YQC) is rejected by Jiang Mo Chen, bringing him warmth and goodwill. And while he demonstrates his kindheartedness, he can tell Yan Qing Chi about Jiang Mo Chen’s despicable nature. After all, lies told over a thousand times will become the truth.9

Footnotes

I hope I translated “我前后鼻音有些分不清” well enough. Basically, she’s having trouble with the ‘ng’ sound.Since the phrase “being jealous” (usually used in romantic relationships) is “吃醋 (chīcù)”, which literally translates as “eating vinegar”, the sourness is referring to how strong his jealousy was/how obvious it was that he was jealous. This particular sentence was translated differently from the original Chinese. Sharing his location as in using the function offered in messaging and social media apps like WeChat. In the Chinese, it was just “Yan Qing Chi thought about it”. I’m just going to add other descriptive words in so it’s not always ‘[so-and-so] thought about it’.Please give me a better translation for 自来熟 and 没有心眼.If anyone is confused, he meant that JMC has the right to go “catch them in the act (of cheating, an extramarital affair, etc)” since he is YQC’s legal spouse.Fun fact: YQC’s surname, Yan (燕), is the character for swallow (the bird). The character for Hu (狐) which JMC is referring to is the one used for foxes. Essentially, JMC is saying that YQC is like a fox. This has many layers to it, since foxes are typically seen as very crafty animals. But there is also the image of foxes being very bewitching, alluring, etc etc. It’s most likely the latter in this case kekHe has to call JMC “older brother”/refer to him as a senior.Lynn: JSX.. you gonna be a sad sad man. MEANWHILE, Daed: hey JSX kinda gives me Randall (from Monsters Inc. & Monsters University) vibes. Weird.
