Chu Nan still wanted Yan Yan to see Ruan Yan’s true face, so he went together with him.

“Ruan Yan, are you scared of ghosts?” Chu Nan asked in the dark.

“I don’t know. I don’t think I’m scared.” Ruan Yan replied truthfully. After all, he wasn’t scared when he watched horror movies, but this was his first time experiencing a haunted house.

Chu Nan’s lips curved up as he created a scary atmosphere to scare Ruan Yan. “When my aunt was young, she wasn’t scared either. Afterwards, she fell sick and saw the White Impermanence (2). From then on, she would keep the lights on even when she slept.”

No one responded.

Ruan Yan panicked more and more, before lifting his leg and running. This haunted house didn’t have any real people NPC’s, they were all machines, the ghosts wouldn’t chase after him.

He didn’t think that that crooked neck ghost would follow him the entire way. From crawling after him on the ground in a contorted manner, to vaguely raising half its body, the ghost continued to chase him.

This was a machine pretending to be a ghost.

Ruan Yan ran until he was out of breath. Before him was a triangular shaped wall, he was trapped––

“Pai!” A crisp snap sounded. Chu Nan’s tall, muscular figure emerged from behind the crooked neck ghost and snapped the ghosts head upright with a single hand.

He said, “Tsk, you really can’t handle being scared. The various ghosts in this haunted house all have a cause of death. If you can’t help them resolve their desires, then they’ll keep the following you. The programming’s just like this.”

Chu Nan looked at Ruan Yan’s frightened face under the dim light and felt quite secure about himself.

Ruan Yan was such a coward, Yan Yan definitely wouldn’t like him.

Ruan Yan understood. If it was a crooked neck ghost, then just put his neck upright and he would stop chasing, right?

Ruan Yan nodded his head and got up using the wall. However, his hand seemed to trigger a mechanism on the wall and his entire body fell inside.

Inside was another room. A red wedding gong, dragon-phoenix candles (3)… A female ghost in bloodied clothes was lying on the bed, her eyes staring dead set at the air.

Ruan Yan was so scared that his voice became unsteady, “Chu Nan, this ghost…”

“Isn’t this easy?” Chu Nan came in from outside, “She can’t even close her eyes in the marital chamber, what other desire do you think she has? Just go and consummate with her and it’ll all be fine.”

He grasped onto the chance to humiliate Ruan Yan and avenge his sufferings this morning. “Why are you hesitating? What, you can’t do it?”

Ruan Yan: …

Ruan Yan thought, if Chu Nan came, then he would definitely force him with the identity of Ran Yan, to jump into the snake pit and retrieve the sceptre.

He definitely wouldn’t go.

Resisting the pain, Ruan Yan extinguished all the candles in the room before Chu Nan discovered his whereabouts.

Everything was completely dark.

As soon as Ruan Yan felt pain, he couldn’t help crying, the sound of his sobs sounding even more apparent in the darkness.

Chu Nan found his way over, “Ruan Yan, it can’t be! You were scared into crying?”

This was really being too useless ah!

Surprise and mockery was apparent in his voice. Ruan Yan softly called out, “Chu Nan, it’s me…”

He changed into a crisp milky voice, tearfully crying, “I fell over, it’s so painful…”

He didn’t protect Yan Yan well and even made her cry!

(1) Recently, I’ve been reading a few more novels, so… I’m thinking this is basically another swear word ^^ (cos in Chinese, this uh… ‘thing’ is called the cao-zi-tou, i.e. grass head, and cao [grass], sounds a lot like the F word in Chinese, hehe)

(2) White Impermanence, or otherwise Bai Wu Chang. Basically the ‘death gods’ in Chinese culture, hehe… Subordinates of Yan Wang (King Yama?)
