Ruan Yu Wen inwardly thought, This is worse than bad, meimei has infuriated our father completely.

妹妹 (pinyin: mei mei) – younger sister.

He wanted to apologise and plead mercy for his younger sister, but the words remained on the tip of his tongue and he could not vocalise it.

His younger sister had gone too far with her words just now.

Evidently, Zhang shi had noticed Earl Chengyi’s dark and sunken expression as well. Alarmed and furious, she grabbed hold of her daughter’s hand violently.

“Bo ye, quell your anger, san niang is still young and she spoke without due consideration in a moment of impulse. Bo ye please do not take it to heart!

“San niang, aren’t you going to apologise to your father and acknowledge your mistake?”

Ruan san niang felt a burst of pain, causing her to release a low groan. She could not help but yell out loud: “Mother, you are hurting me!”

Zhang shi released her hand hastily. Upon seeing the bruises on her daughter’s wrist, she felt incredibly distressed in her heart, but it was important for her daughter to acknowledge her mistake right now.

“San niang, apologise to your father quickly!”

“Younger sister, apologise to Father quickly!” Ruan Yu Wen also followed in urging.

When Ruan san niang saw her older brother and mother urging her to apologise to her scum father, she felt extremely aggrieved in her heart.

“I’m not wrong, why should I apologise?”

Zhang shi and Ruan Yu Wen almost vomited blood because of the bold and assured Ruan san niang.

理直气壮 (pinyin: li zhi qi zhuang) – to have the courage of one’s convictions; just and forceful.

Earl Chengyi did not have the habit of hitting his daughters; no matter how angry he was, he would never use his hand to slap her. Thus, he threw his sleeves violently, glaring at his legitimate daughter who refused to repent and amend her ways as his heart froze over completely. He threw down a sentence frigidly:

“San niang, you are on your own!”

Then he left with a flick of his sleeve.

In the end, she was still the legitimate daughter he had expended a lot of time and energy fostering, and Earl Chengyi was still unwilling to destroy his painstaking effort, so he could only choose to ignore and not care.

心血 (pinyin: xin xue) – heart’s blood.

No matter how discontented she was with the family.

Zhang shi’s visage became ghastly pale in an instant. It was over, the Earl had given up on san niang.

“San niang, you… are you trying to anger your mother to death?” Zhang shi was about to go insane from anger because of her daughter.

“Younger sister, you must be happy now, Father has given up on you completely, but do you know what this means?

“It means that you won’t receive the family’s help in the future. When you marry out, the family won’t give you any support.”

Ruan san niang was not concerned in the least as she smiled coldly, “I do not lack it.”

She only needed to be on friendly terms with her fourth sister and the future Empress Dowager, and with the experiences she had from her transmigration and rebirth, helping Qi Yue An win promotions and gain wealth was a piece of cake.

What kind of help could the Earl Chengyi Residence and her scum father give her?

They only knew how to suck the blood from her body.

Ruan san niang sneered in her heart.

When Zhang shi saw that her daughter was determined to walk down her chosen road until it was dark, her disappointment increased. Perhaps she would learn to turn around when she collided with the south wall.

Ruan Yu Wen gave his younger sister a deep glance, then told his mother that he was going back to his courtyard.

He was afraid that if he continued staying here, he was going to die from anger because of his foolish, naïve, and obstinate younger sister.

……

On the next day, a fine drizzle rained from the skies and the winds carried over a slight chill.

After Ruan Xi had eaten her breakfast, she stayed in her room and set down the four treasures of the study – namely the writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper – before she started to practice her calligraphy while making sure to imitate the original owner’s handwriting.

Fortunately, she had taken to calligraphy writing as a hobby in her previous life due to her congenital heart disease, so she was not unfamiliar to the brush and she did not feel awkward using a brush to write. It was just that traditional characters had more brush strokes and it was easy to write them wrongly.

Hence, Ruan Xi could only practice more while following the complex form of the characters from the original owner’s memories and internalise them fully.

“Writing the characters is truly difficult, using the brush to write well is even harder!”

Ruan Xi sighed with emotion as she scanned the few pieces of fine writing paper that were filled with written characters, rubbing her wrist.

The difference between these characters and the original owner’s handwriting was too big; the original owner had a pretty and flowery standard script which was the result of the original owner taking the time to practice her calligraphy consistently, albeit secretly. While her actual written letters were beautiful and embellished, the characters she showed her teachers had an upright and foursquare font, devoid of its usual vigour and soul, which made it look extremely stiff.

Ruan Xi’s written letters were utterly ordinary, and it was only slightly better than the handwriting that the original owner purposefully showed.

Silently, Ruan Xi threw the papers into the brazier to burn them before she continued practicing her penmanship. Then, she also burnt the seven to eight pieces of paper she used.

The fine drizzle was still coming down outside the window, and there were only a few small sparrows chirping under the eaves.

“Young Lady, Wen gongzi has dispatched his servants to send the medicinal herbs over.” Su Yu’s excited voice rang out from outside the door.

Ruan Xi placed down her brush, burning the fine writing paper which was filled with characters. After she tidied her appearance, she left her inner room and allowed Su Yu to lead the people in.

The medicinal herbs that Wen gongzi sent over totalled up to ten wooden boxes. When Ruan Xi saw the extent of Wen gongzi’s generosity and plans, she found it hard to conceal the shock  on her face.

“Ruan si xiaojie, all these are the medicinal herbs that the Oldest Young Master is sending you. This is the detailed list, please check through it once.” A Mama with a strict countenance offered her the detailed list with both hands respectfully.

阮四小姐 (pinying: ruan si xiao jie) – Ruan (Family’s) Fourth Young Lady, Ruan Xi.

“It has been hard on Mama.”

Ruan Xi smiled as she received the list to skim through it. Then, she instructed Su Yu and Su Zhu to make an inventory of the medicinal herbs according to the list.

Since they requested it verbally, checking through the list in front of them was showing mutual respect.

Mama Sun, who had been responsible for bringing these people over, looked at the opened boxes with dilated pupils and wide eyes.

There were so many first-class medicinal herbs.

Ginseng, reishi mushroom, tuber fleeceflower root, snow lotus, caterpillar fungus……

Images of the Medicinal Herbs

Apart from the precious medicinal herbs, there were ordinary nourishing medicinal herbs as well, and their quality was equally superb.

Mama Sun was breathless. She heard that these medicinal herbs were prepared by Wen furen, it seems like Wen furen was quite satisfied with the Fourth Young Lady.

She had to report this to the Furen.

Meanwhile, Ruan Xi did not know about the inner workings of Mama Sun’s mind as she personally entertained the Mama.

The strict-looking Mama from the Wen Residence drank her tea as she observed Ruan si xiaojie without a word or perceptible movement before she nodded to herself silently.

Although this Fourth Young Lady was born from a concubine and her temperament seemed ordinary, her manners suited the occasion, especially her serene and reserved gaze.

Truth to be told, Wen furen had promised the Oldest Young Master to send so many precious medicinal herbs because she also had the intention to test and observe Ruan Xi. The Mama that was responsible for sending the medicinal herbs was one of Wen furen’s trusted servants, who was the best at reading people.

By all accounts, Ruan Xi’s performance was decent: not a single trace of pettiness could be discerned from her person, and interestingly enough, she discovered that this Ruan si xiaojie seemed to be restraining her brilliance.

She was a smart person.

Sure enough, the Oldest Young Master had exceptional insight.

It was just that her illegitimate status was indeed less-than-desirable, but when she thought about the dream that her Furen made…

The strict-looking Mama did not have any intention of being hypercritical either.

Ruan Xi did not know that her every move and action was being meticulously observed, and she merely made a conscious attempt to show that she was hiding some things.

The pair drank their tea quietly.

Su Yu and Su Zhu’s list checking speed was very fast and each wooden box had its corresponding medicinal herb description, so they only needed to follow the detailed list and it would suffice.

“Young Lady, the inventory of the medicinal herbs has been completed, there are no mistakes or omissions.”

That strict-looking Mama revealed a rare smile: “Since there are no issues with the medicinal herbs, may the Fourth Young Lady keep the medicinal herbs properly. Laoshen will be taking her leave first, the Furen is still waiting for Laoshen’s reply.”

老身 (pinyin: lao shen) – used by an old woman to refer to herself.

Respectfully, Ruan Xi stood up and escorted the Mama out of the door. “Mama, walk slowly!”

That Mama bent her knees slightly and nodded before she brought the group of servants to depart vast and mightily.

Mama Sun also bade farewell to Ruan Xi before she rushed back to the main courtyard to report to her Furen.

Thus, only Ruan Xi and her two maidservants remained in the room. Su Yu and Su Zhu looked at the wooden boxes on the floor with visible excitement.

“Young Lady, there are so many medicinal herbs. Wen gongzi has truly penned down a large stroke.”

Ruan Xi smiled as she moved towards the boxes to scan them one by one. All of them were untampered and excellent medicinal herbs.

However, she had a persistent doubt in her heart: it was apparent that Wen gongzi held no affections for her, but he treated her incredibly well.

It was truly strange.

“Keep these medicinal herbs in another storeroom.”

“Yes, Young Lady.”

Su Yu and Su Zhu got to work. After they were done keeping the medicinal herbs, Su Yu asked: “Young Lady, should we use the medicinal herbs sent by Wen gongzi to decoct the vitality-nourishing medicinal soup this time around?”

Truthfully speaking, all the medicinal soups which were decocted from the medicinal herbs that the Furen sent over yesterday were secretly poured away. If there hadn’t been issues with the medicinal herbs, they would not have poured it away because it was too wasteful.

Ruan Xi nodded her head: “From now on, use the medicinal herbs that Wen gongzi sent over to decoct the nourishing medicinal soup.”

Su Yu agreed happily. Seeing that it was time for lunch, Su Yu and Su Zhu went to the kitchen to fetch the meal with due haste.

Two quarters of an hour later, Su Yu and Su Zhu returned with lunch.

A familiar taste, a familiar formula.

Ruan Xi genuinely longed for Wen gongzi, since she did not know when he was going to send the training Mama over.

Just as Ruan Xi picked up her chopsticks, a hard-labour woman-servant entered the room to report: “Young Lady, the Third Young Lady has arrived.”

Ruan Xi: “……”

Ruan san niang actually came over during her lunch time, was she planning to eat with her?

“Invite her in.”
