Ruan Xi glanced at Mama Lin and Su Yu. Mama Lin was staring at her with a smile, gaze suggestive and faintly tinged with encouragement. Su Yu was extremely direct; she clearly wished that her Young Lady could follow Zhang Qing to meet Wen gongzi this very instant.

Ruan Xi: “……”

If Wen gongzi had visited Yunhua Temple alone, Ruan Xi would not hesitate in the least, but Wen gongzi’s mother Wen furen and the womenfolk in his family were in attendance. It was not ideal for her to meet Wen gongzi alone.

Ruan Xi harboured some confusion about Wen gongzi’s train of thought.

Zhang Qing noticed that Ruan si xiaojie seemed to be hesitating, so he said in a quick-witted manner: “Si xiaojie, gongzi said that he will keep waiting for yõu.”

Ruan Xi: “……”

Truly, Wen gongzi was refreshing the impression she had of him once more.

“Young Lady, you should go, don’t let Wen gongzi wait for too long.” Su Yu urged, feeling like she was going to die of anxiety as she watched her Young Lady remain unmoving.

Wen gongzi was proper in conduct, akin to a moon in a cleared sky, and was the fiancé to her Young Lady, Su Yu was not the slightest bit worried that Wen gongzi would do something that would damage her Young Lady’s reputation.

Meanwhile, Mama Lin immediately understood the Fourth Young Lady’s apprehensions at a glance, and she persuaded her with a smile: “Fourth Young Lady, yõu need not worry about this first, we can speak of this after yõu meet Wen gongzi.”

When Ruan Xi saw Mama Lin agreeing with the fact that she should go and see Wen gongzi, she stopped wavering.

“Okay.”

“Si xiaojie, this way please!” Zhang Qing was overjoyed, and he quickly walked in front to lead the way.

Ruan Xi brought Mama Lin and Su Yu to follow Zhang Qing to Wen gongzi’s meditation room. She surveyed her surroundings. Sure enough, it was as Zhang Qing had said; their surroundings were extremely quiet and it was devoid of people.

“Si xiaojie, the gongzi is waiting for yõu inside,” said Zhang Qing respectfully.

Ruan Xi adjusted her attitude before she took a step forward on her lonesome to knock on the door.

“Knock knock…”

After knocking twice, she was on the verge of knocking for the third time when the wooden door opened before her hand could land, and a handsome and smiling countenance entered her view.

Ruan Xi’s hand accidentally touched Wen gongzi’s handsome face, which caused her to quickly retract her hand as if she had been shocked.

When he felt the fleeting warmth and tactile sensation, Wen gongzi’s breathing stagnated for a brief moment before it returned back to normal instantaneously.

“You’re here.”

With Wen gongzi’s sonorous, soft and gentle voice, and his handsome visage being well within reach, in addition to the accidental contact made, Ruan Xi’s face heated up slightly and her heartbeat quickened inexplicably.

“Mn.”

She responded while putting on a strong pretence of calmness as she tried her hardest to steady her heartbeat.

“Come in.” Wen gongzi smiled soundlessly, shifting to the side with great elegance to allow Ruan Xi to enter the room.

As Ruan Xi was about to lift her skirt corners to step into the meditation room, her gaze carelessly glanced past the familiar fish and lotus sachet at Wen gongzi’s waist before she took a pause. She did not expect that Wen gongzi would value her present this much; Ruan Xi revealed a trace of happiness in her eyes and the corners of her lips quirked up unconsciously.

“The sachet you made looks very good.” Wen gongzi praised her with a smile after he followed her line of sight, lowering his head to glance at the fish and lotus sachet at his own waist.

By that time, Ruan Xi had already recomposed herself and she said smilingly, “It’s good that Wen gongzi likes it.” After saying that, she moved into the room.

Wen gongzi closed the wooden door, even fastening the door bolt specifically. Upon turning around, he saw Ruan Xi’s surprised and puzzled appearance, which made him look at her deeply before he explained in an indifferent and self-possessed manner: “To prevent someone from barging in suddenly.”

His actions were truly harming his image as a modest gentleman and his explanation was done perfunctorily too. Ruan Xi’s lips twitched a little.

The Wen gongzi inside the novel was an unrestrained and dignified noble’s son, like the moon in a cleared sky in the first half, and he later became the Minister of the Board of Punishment that everyone held in awe and veneration in the latter half.

At the present moment, the fact that Wen gongzi tethered the door, leaving a single man and single woman… no, it was leaving an affianced man and woman alone, and Ruan Xi still had the headspace to think in other directions, sufficiently proved the amount of trust she had in Wen gongzi’s moral character.

When Wen gongzi noted that Ruan Xi seemed completely unfamiliar with his words, he raised an eyebrow.

The meditation room was quiet and empty, the sandalwood smoke curled upwards, and there was only a painting of Guanyin holding a child hanging in the middle of the wall.

Ruan Xi and Wen gongzi sat opposite of each other as Wen gongzi made some tea for Ruan Xi with fluid movements.

A peculiar and enchanting atmosphere suffused through the room.

“Wen gongzi, do you feel like we’re carrying out a secret rendezvous like in vernacular fiction?”

Ruan Xi asked in high spirits as she scanned the entire room.

Once those words were spilled, the enchanting atmosphere was utterly shattered in an instant.

Wen gongzi’s expression became subtle. When he met Ruan Xi for the first time, her audacity was incredibly large. When he met her again, she pretended to be law-abiding. After she was exposed by him, she stopped putting up a façade in front of him, and she was all the more casual and natural right now.

The feeling it gave was quite nice.

However, Wen gongzi could not suppress his laughter when he heard her construe their arranged talk into a secret rendezvous. As he offered her the steeped tea, Wen gongzi corrected her seriously: “Si niang, we’re an affianced couple, how could you say that this is a secret rendezvous. It should be getting along justly and openly instead.”

Ruan Xi eyed the tethered door, then the empty and quiet small meditation room. Where is the justly and openly?

Wen gongzi was probably spouting nonsense with his eyes open.

Upon seeing Ruan Xi’s small movements, Wen gongzi was both speechless and amused. He asked:

“Si niang, do you not find this meditation room very familiar?”

Ruan Xi sipped on the slightly astringent tea before she glanced at Wen gongzi, confused. “The row of meditation rooms here look the same but with minor differences; of course it looks familiar.”

Arching his eyebrows, Wen gongzi tossed out a question in a frank and straightforward manner: “Si niang, you still haven’t recalled it?”

Ruan Xi’s heart tightened unexpectedly when she heard Wen gongzi’s words. What was she supposed to recall…

The memories that the original owner possessed with regards to her visit to Yunhua Temple two years ago was blurry and hazy at best; Ruan Xi did not know what happened to the original owner at all.

More importantly, judging from Wen gongzi’s tone of voice, it seemed like the original owner already had an intersection with Wen gongzi two years ago…

Ruan Xi had always been of the opinion that it was strange for Wen gongzi to agree to marrying the original owner, and even to the extent where he knew about the original owner hiding herself. Could it be that the actual state of affairs would be made known today?

Ruan Xi was faintly nervous in her heart, but more of it was agitation.

“I only remember that I came here with my paternal grandmother to offer incense in Yunhua Temple two years ago, but the memories pertaining to Yunhua Temple itself is a blur.

“Wen gongzi, could you tell me what happened here exactly?”

Wen gongzi smiled slightly, raising his tea bowl to sip on the tea before he replied leisurely, “Si niang, rather than learning about the matter from someone else, perhaps you should try and recollect it by yourself.”

Truthfully speaking, the situation back then was slightly… slightly embarrassing for him to speak about.

He heard that after she left Yunhua Temple, si niang suddenly lost her memories regarding her visit to Yunhua Temple.

Wen gongzi was quite surprised when he learnt about this later.

But even if si niang failed to recall those memories, he would still fulfil his promise, although he did not expect that he would carry out his promise in advance.

He remembered that when his Mother arbitrarily asked him for his opinion back then, he had presumed that si niang had remembered the incident in Yunhua Temple and she could not wait for him to fulfil the promise, so he gave his consent without really thinking about it.

Ruan Xi: “……”

The distance to the truth was just one step away, and yet Wen gongzi suddenly threw that sentence at her, telling her to recall it by herself. Ruan Xi felt uncomfortable all over.

Wen gongzi is a terrible person.

Wen gongzi examined Ruan Xi’s dumbstruck and baffled expression, mood inclining towards comfort.

“It’s fine if you can’t recall it. You don’t need to be overly concerned; perhaps there might be a day where you will remember it all of a sudden.”

Since he had carried out the promise in advance, si niang’s remembrance or lack thereof, was no longer important.

Ruan Xi: “……”

The original owner was already gone, where was she supposed to find that memory fragment?

Furthermore, it looked like Wen gongzi did not mind the fact that she could not remember. Ruan Xi was speechless; maybe that memory fragment was not as important as it seemed.

Ruan Xi was not the type of person who liked getting tangled over things so she put the thought aside soon after. Peering at Wen gongzi, she smiled calmly: “Wen gongzi speaks correctly, I feel the same too.”

“Right, did Wen gongzi arrange a meeting with me for the sake of asking if I had forgotten the past?”

Her words were filled with teasing.

Wen gongzi was slightly surprised when he saw Ruan Xi adjust so quickly. In an elegant motion, he sipped his tea and spoke with a leisurely smile: “Bringing up the past was only because it was convenient. I arranged this meeting because I wanted to articulate my mother’s attitude to set your mind at ease.”

Before he arranged to meet si niang, Wen gongzi had a conversation with his Mother and learnt that his Mother actually had a great first impression of si niang, but his Mother was extremely dissatisfied with her concubine-born status.

After all, she was going to be the wife of the eldest legitimate son; his Mother was afraid that si niang could not control her younger sisters-in-law in the future.

Whereas for Wen gongzi, this was a non-issue; he would never allow his wife to suffer such grievances.

Ruan Xi mistook the meaning in Wen gongzi’s words and she replied serenely, “As a matter of fact, even without Wen gongzi’s reminder, I am well-aware that Wen furen must be dissatisfied with me being her future daughter-in-law.

“I believe, if given the chance, Wen furen would most definitely terminate the marriage contract between us.”

Although Ruan Xi said that, it did not mean that she was backing away and giving up; she would work even harder to improve herself and make herself more outstanding.

Wen gongzi was honestly a great choice for a husband. She could only work hard to ensure that she would not have any regrets in the future.

Wen gongzi’s eyebrows raised slightly upon hearing that utterance. He fixed his eyes on her steadily, firmness and solemnity seeping into his gentle voice as he murmured:

“Si niang, regardless of  how satisfied or dissatisfied my mother is with regards to you being her daughter-in-law, I will not renege on our marriage agreement.”

Si niang might have forgotten their encounter two years ago, but Wen gongzi remembered it with crystal clarity.

Although si niang’s tone of voice had been undisciplined and casual as if she was cracking a joke then, Wen gongzi had committed to his promise with all seriousness and placed it on his heart.

When he agreed to this marriage at the start, it was only for the sake of fulfilling his promise, but after the frequent and joyous exchange of letters with Ruan Xi over the past few days,  he started to gradually feel a different kind of delight for Ruan Xi, this fiancée of his.

He started feeling that spending the rest of his life with Ruan Xi was a matter that would invoke joy in both his body and mind.

Ruan Xi was surprised. She did not expect that Wen gongzi would say such words. As she met Wen gongzi’s earnest and profound eyes, heat rose up to her cheeks quietly, staining her jade white countenance with an enchanting red hue.

When Wen gongzi saw that, his heart throbbed with a burst of nervous astonishment and the corners of his mouth curled up soundlessly.

“Si niang, you can set your heart at ease. My Mother had a great first impression of you.”

Ruan Xi’s expression was slightly strange. Ever since the ancient times, the relationship between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law had always been the most delicate and unfathomable thing.

How did Wen furen become satisfied with her future daughter-in-law after one glance?

Ruan Xi did not believe it.

Wen gongzi absorbed Ruan Xi’s expression into his eyes. Smiling calmly, he did not avoid the subject as he said candidly: “Actually, it’s not that there isn’t something she is dissatisfied with. My Mother’s only source of dissatisfaction is your concubine-born status.

“Mother holds legitimacy and illegitimacy with great importance.”

This was normal, since she was not money which was loved by all. Ruan Xi treated this as a matter of course.

“I am a daughter of concubine descent in this lifetime. If you marry me, nothing can be done about Wen furen’s dissatisfaction.

“Except I am afraid that this will prove to be a conundrum for Wen gongzi.” Ruan Xi smiled slyly.

Wen gongzi was split between laughter and tears as he looked at Ruan Xi with a gentle gaze.

Si niang was quite adorable like this.

The corner of his lips raised and his following chuckle was deep with meaning.

“Si niang, you can rest assured, I have a plan to get the best of both worlds which can satisfy Mother.”

Ruan Xi: “……”

They were clearly engaged, and their marriage had only been settled recently, how did they manage to tangent the topic towards the relationship between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law?

It felt odd.

Ruan Xi’s eyes rippled with some vexation.

At this moment, Zhang Qing’s anxious voice rang out from outside the door. “Gongzi, the Furen has arrived.”

Ruan Xi twisted her head to look at Wen gongzi.
