Ruan san niang’s matter was only a small episode. While Ruan Xi had kindled the fire, Ruan san niang had proceeded to create her own troubles, and Zhang shi had added fuel to the fire, which led to the punishment becoming heavier.

Ruan Xi was rendered completely speechless by the string of mystical developments.

If Ruan san niang had first lowered her head and admitted to her own mistake, putting forth a repentant attitude, would the matter have escalated to this stage?

Ruan Xi continued to manage the needlework room and learn from Mama Lin, while using her leisure time to exchange letters with Wen gongzi. With Mama Lin making an all-out effort to guide her, Ruan Xi progressed at an amazing speed.

For the next two days, Ruan Xi was extremely busy. When she eventually managed to catch a break afterwards, she brought out the tea and pastries to listen to Su Yu talk about the gossip regarding Ruan san niang.

Despite being compelled to kneel at the ancestral hall, Ruan san niang had been equally busy.

Bizarrely enough, Ruan san niang was not busy reflecting on herself in front of the memorial tablets in their ancestral hall, but busy writing letters to her fiancé Qi Yue An in front of their ancestors’ memorial tablets. Sometimes, she would write five to six letters, but she had yet to receive a single letter in reply.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Ruan san niang was truly hard to describe with words, and yet no one in the residence wanted to manage her.

Su Yu continued to speak about the gossip.

“The Third Young Lady was extremely angry because she didn’t receive a single reply letter from Qi er gongzi, which led her to the belief that someone must have intercepted and held onto her letters instead of sending it Qi er gongzi, and she just threw a huge fuss in the ancestral hall.

“Furen went over and proceeded to tell the Third Young Lady the cruel truth, and even said that Qi er gongzi had been lingering on the gaily-painted pleasure boat with the Queen of Flowers – the most famous courtesan – drinking and making merry for the past two days. Nubi does not understand why Furen has to provoke the Third Young Lady like this, but the Third Young Lady seems to have gone mad as she shouted about wanting to find Qi er gongzi. In the end, she was knocked out by two Mamas.”

Ruan Xi’s lips twitched. “How pitiful!”

Ruan san niang was already miserable enough after being ignored by Qi Yue An, of whom her heart had been longing for, and yet her legitimate mother did not think it was enough since she saw fit to stab her heart with another verbal knife.

It would be stranger if Ruan san niang did not go mad, and she wondered when Ruan san niang would notice Zhang shi’s oddity.

All of a sudden, Ruan Xi was really looking forward to the confrontation between the fake mother and daughter.

After listening to the gossip about Ruan san niang, Ruan Xi abruptly remembered that today was the day where Ruan san niang’s prompt-books were being officially sold, so she asked Su Zhu to go to the Learned Book Pavilion to buy a few copies back.

Although they had an acrimonious falling-out, it did not stop her from reading the prompt-book that Ruan san niang wrote.

A double-hour later, Su Zhu returned and placed the prompt-book she bought in front of Ruan Xi.

“Young Lady, nubi has bought the prompt-book written by the Third Young Lady.”

“Su Zhu, where is our copy?”

“Over here.” Su Zhu took out another prompt-book of average quality and handed it over.

Su Yu glanced at it before allowing Su Zhu to keep it away. When they had the time, they could take it out and read it. As Ruan Xi’s main maidservants, Su Yu and Su Zhu both recognised words and reading a prompt-book was not difficult for them.

“Didn’t I give you enough silvers? Su Zhu, why did you only buy one copy?”

Ruan Xi looked at them helplessly. They were making it seem like she was being very miserly towards her maidservants.

“Young Lady, when it comes to prompt-books, there is no need to buy more than one. We can pass around a single copy instead of wasting more silvers.” Su Yu and Su Zhu had stayed with their Young Lady for a long time and they had learned how to plan meticulously and have a strict budget.

If it were not for their Young Lady wanting to fork out the silvers this time around, they would not have bought it.

Ruan Xi smiled, “If that makes you happy.”

Since she was reserving the day for resting and relaxation, Ruan Xi sat on the short couch with a cup of warm tea, reading the prompt-book at her leisure.

The paper quality for the prompt-book was first-class, and Su Yu probably bought the elaborately packaged version for her.

Honestly speaking, Ruan san niang did have a talent in story writing: the book was measured in its rise and falls and thrilling in content, which made people wish to continue reading.

Ruan Xi was absolutely certain that this prompt-book would become popular in the entire capital.

When that time came around, Ruan san niang would definitely cause a stir if she publicised her identity.

While the Ruan san niang from the original novel was bestowed with a great deal of golden fingers by the author, she lacked a halo for residence fighting and handling of affairs, and her lacking abilities were truly beyond description.

Ruan Xi felt that it would be great if Ruan san niang could place her efforts in the areas that she was proficient in instead of staring at her fixedly and playing meagre and childish tricks.

After reading the prompt-book, Ruan Xi was sipping on her tea when she remembered the surprise that Wen gongzi wrote about.

Should she learn from Wen gongzi and mention the matter at the end of the letter?

Ruan Xi was a little torn.

If she did not mention it, perhaps Wen gongzi would forget about it while she constantly thought about it.

If she mentioned it, she felt like she was forcing the process.

Despite her thoughts, Ruan Xi did not manage to come to a decision and she took an afternoon nap instead.

In the afternoon, not long after Ruan Xi had woken up from her afternoon nap, her legitimate mother Zhang shi dispatched a servant to ask Ruan Xi to come to the Main Courtyard. Since Ruan Xi did not know the reason, she became vigilant internally.

After reaching the Main Courtyard and having the older woman servants at the door report her arrival, Ruan Xi stepped into the reception hall, and she surveyed everyone in the room with a sweeping glance.

Only her legitimate mother and a few maidservants and Mamas were in the reception room. One of the Mamas had an elegant appearance and her general temperament bore some similarities to Mama Lin.

But the feeling that Mama Lin gave her was much more comfortable.

Ruan Xi internalised the information as she went forward with unhurried steps before she bowed with feminine obeisance.

“Si niang pays her respect to Mother.”

When Zhang shi saw how remarkable Ruan Xi was becoming and thought of the fragile fortune that her daughter had, a wave of revulsion and displeasure flooded her heart. However, she was still an abled and virtuous legitimate mother on the surface so she said a few lines to Ruan Xi with a smile before she moved to the main topic.

“Si niang, this is Mama Yang, of whom the Earl specifically sourced for you. Mama Yang used to wait upon Mu taifei, and if you can receive her wholehearted guidance, you will definitely yield boundless profits in the future.”

Zhang shi did not expect that the Earl was so hardworking, such that he actually managed to find a Mama that served Mu taifei.

If her daughter was still around, Zhang shi would definitely use her utmost efforts to fight for her.

But the counterfeit did not warrant such efforts.

She felt more hateful the longer she thought about it.

Mama Yang was the Mama with an elegant appearance, and her gaze had constantly lingered on her the moment she stepped into the reception room.

She was originally invited to become the Mama of a Young Lady from the Mu Residence once she left the imperial palace, but due to some accident in between, another Mama was sent to the Mu Residence while she was arranged to become a Mama to a concubine-born daughter in Earl Chengyi Residence.

Mama Yang could not help but feel dejected and unreconciled in her heart.

The only worthy consolation was that this Fourth Young Lady’s future husband was Wen gongzi.

“One has seen the Fourth Young Lady.” Mama Yang said smilingly, concealing her thoughts as she inclined her body slightly to bow to her once Earl Chengyi’s furen was done with the introductions.

When Ruan Xi heard her legitimate mother’s introduction, a vein in her head pulsed. The Mama Yang that served Mu taifei, wasn’t she the Mama who betrayed the female protagonist?

Perhaps there were still other Mamas by the surname of Yang that had once served Mu taifei.

As those thoughts occurred to Ruan Xi, she came to a belated realisation that she was akin to a bird who was getting startled even by a mere twang of a bowstring. She quickly restrained her expression before she gave Mama Yang a natural smile. “May Mama Yang take the troubles and cares in the future.”

However, she still heightened her vigilance by several degrees in her heart.

Once Zhang shi had settled the entire matter, she did not have any intention to linger around either, so she allowed Ruan Xi to bring Mama Yang back to Limpid Heart Garden while she went to handle her counterfeit daughter.

Regardless of the Mama’s true nature and moral character, or the vigilance in her heart, Ruan Xi still had to ensure that everything was appropriately arranged once she returned to Limpid Heart Garden.

When Mama Yang witnessed Ruan si xiaojie’s considerate and comprehensive arrangements, she was inwardly satisfied. It seems like this Fourth Young Lady was an intelligent and capable one.

Perhaps having to wait upon this Fourth Young Lady was not a bad thing.

“Many thanks to the Fourth Young Lady.” Mama Yang thanked her with a smile, revealing a trace of sincerity on her expression.

Ruan Xi smiled back, saying: “Mama Yang is being polite. If you have anything you need, you can inform Su Yu, Su Yu will arrange everything accordingly.”

Still smiling, Mama Yang agreed.

Once the arrangements for Mama Yang were done, Ruan Xi returned to her room. Mama Lin was already waiting for her inside, and she immediately asked her a question upon seeing her step through the doors.

“Fourth Yang Lady, what is yõur opinion of Mama Yang?”

Ruan Xi knew that Mama Lin was testing her after she heard the question. She lowered her head to contemplate for a long moment before she vocalised her own observations.

“Since Mama Yang’s capabilities can’t be seen right now, I will only talk about her as a person. I feel that she should belong to the category of people who have deep thoughts and an ambitious heart.”

Ruan Xi’s face was slightly red. Speaking of which, because she had the plot in her hand, she had guarded against Mama Yang from the very first moment. As they were returning to Limpid Heart Garden, she had taken the chance to chat with Mama Yang briefly to observe the subtle changes to her expressions before she finally ascertained the fact that this Mama Yang should be the Mama Yang who betrayed the female protagonist in the novel.

Once she thought about how a hidden tumour had arrived by her side, Ruan Xi felt her head hurting terribly.

Unfortunately, this Mama Yang always upheld an excellent moral character in front of everyone, or else the female protagonist would not have trusted her, only to get stabbed by her in the end.

Her Earl Father’s luck was truly extraordinary.

Mama Lin nodded in admiration, her eyes brimming with praise. “The fact that the Fourth Young Lady can see through Mama Yang’s intrinsic character makes me very happy.”

“Fourth Young Lady, yõu must bear these words in mind: for people like Mama Yang, if yõu can’t subdue her completely, yõu should never give her yõur trust easily and place her in an important position.”

Ruan Xi admired Mama Lin, since she was always capable of piercing the truth with one pertinent remark, like drawing blood on the first prick. This was a genuinely amazing Mama.

“I have heard Mama Lin.”

Frankly speaking, even if Mama Lin did not mention it, Ruan Xi would not dare to use this person heavily either. Since she could not remove her right now, she had to try her best to squeeze out Mama Yang’s value.

Mama Lin smiled in satisfaction; she liked that the Fourth Young Lady was intelligent, rational, and she knew herself well.

It was no wonder that she could obtain Wen furen’s recognition.

After talking to Mama Lin, Ruan Xi’s body became far more relaxed.

At night, Ruan Yu Wen handed Wen gongzi’s letter to Ruan Xi as per usual. Prior to this, he had been curious about what his fourth younger sister and Wen gongzi were writing in their letters everyday since they seemed like they had never ending topics and they did not mind taking the trouble at all, and yet he could not ask about it.

However, Ruan Yu Wen no longer made it difficult for himself. Furthermore, he did not have headspace to be concerned about his fourth sister’s feelings when san niang had been tormenting him for the past two days until his head was hurting, and the attitude that his Mother was giving san niang truly chilled his heart.

He decided to have a conversation with his Mother tonight.

Ruan Xi waited for her oldest brother to leave before she went back to her room to open Wen gongzi’s letter. Just like before, Wen gongzi’s letter contained some interesting things that happened in his daily life and inside the Wen Residence. One or two Wen Family members would make their appearance every time, and it felt like Wen gongzi was doing this on purpose to tell her about the personalities and habits of said members.

Wen gongzi was genuinely expending a lot of thought and care.

Ruan Xi’s lips curled up, unconsciously infecting her entire countenance with a smile.

When she reached the end of the letter, she made a noise of surprise. Wen gongzi had invited her to participate in the flower banquet hosted by the legitimate daughter of Duke An which was happening three days later.

The legitimate daughter of Duke An was Wen gongzi’s younger female paternal cousin Wen Jing Ru.

The flower banquet was taking place in Wen lao-furen’s Junzhu Residence.

Ruan Xi: “……”

If her memory did not fail her, both the male and female protagonists from the original novel would be appearing at the flower banquet hosted by Wen Jing Ru.

Therefore, she was going to meet the male and female protagonists at last?

Ruan Xi raised her eyebrows slightly.

When she was replying to the letter, Ruan Xi accepted Wen gongzi’s invitation before she told Wen gongzi about Mama Yang’s arrival. Lastly, Ruan Xi finally reached the end of her restraint and she could not stop herself from asking Wen gongzi when she would be receiving his surprise.

After she was done writing the letter, Ruan Xi asked Su Zhu to deliver the letter to her oldest brother’s courtyard.

Meanwhile, Mama Yang was observing this Fourth Young Lady the entire time and she would occasionally chat with the maidservants in Limpid Heart Garden. Her cautious inquiries were extremely obscure and impossible to discern; in a short period of time, she managed to collect most of the information regarding Ruan Xi.

Her interest towards Ruan Xi increased.
