Ruan Xi and Wen Ting Zhou admired the lake scenery from the small forest after Ruan san niang departed.

“Mu xiaojie is truly pitiable.”

When Ruan Xi recalled how Mu Qing Ci had heaved a sigh of relief after Ruan san niang departed, she could not stop herself from shedding a sympathetic tear for Mu Qing Ci, because Ruan san niang’s manner of torment was genuinely difficult to digest.

Wen Ting Zhou laughed. Whether it was Ruan san xiaojie, that young lady from the Mu Family, or any other lady, he did not have the heart to pay attention or acknowledge them. Consequently, he refused to comment about whether Mu xiaojie was pitiful or not.

Not wanting Ruan Xi to divert her thoughts to another lady, Wen Ting Zhou coughed gently before he brought up the matter he had been mulling over.

“Si niang, now that we’re affianced, and we have a certain understanding of each other, shouldn’t we change our manner of address?”

Upon hearing Wen Ting Zhou bring up the issue of their appellations, Ruan Xi immediately tossed the female protagonist and Ruan san niang to the back of her mind. She contemplated briefly, realising that Wen gongzi was right. Hence, she asked him: “What should I call you then, your name?”

Wen gongzi looked fixedly into Ruan Xi’s eyes, his smiling expression akin to a cleansing spring wind, “I think it would be better if you add the two words ‘gege’ at the back.”

“Ting Zhou gege?”

Ruan Xi recited those four words softly, before she raised her head to look at Wen Ting Zhou with a smile that was not a smile.

As her understanding of him deepened, she became cognizant of the fact that this person was a bad guy wearing a gentle and soft façade; what gentle and mild like jade, or a lone moon in the cleared skies, all of it was fake.

“Mn.” Wen Ting Zhou nodded his head like all was normal, but his lip corners were curling up high.

Ruan Xi: “……”

“I think that Ting Zhou da ge is more suitable.”

All of sudden, Ruan Xi did not want to entertain his whims. She looked at him with a devious smirk.

Wen Ting Zhou used a gentle gaze to stare at her directly.

“It isn’t. My younger brothers and sisters call me da ge, I don’t want another younger sister.”

Ruan Xi chuckled out loud, “And Ting Zhou gege isn’t an older brother?”

“There’s a difference, the feeling it gives me is different.” Wen Ting Zhou smiled slightly, his smile giving the particular impression that he was akin to a lone moon in cleared skies.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Why was she hearing some ambiguity from Wen Ting Zhou’s tone of voice?

Was it her delusion?

“Cough cough. It’s better if I call you Ting Zhou da ge.” Once Ruan Xi thought about the image of herself calling him Ting Zhou gege, she could not help but shudder. It was too romantic, and too embarrassing to speak of.

“That’s fine.”

A glint of pity flickered past Wen Ting Zhou’s eyes. However, the future days were long; there would eventually be a time where she would call him gege.

“You can call me Ting Zhou da ge, I’ll call you Ruan Ruan.

“Ruan Ruan, what do you think about it?”

Ruan Xi’s heart skipped a beat abruptly. Feeling exceedingly stifled, she shifted her line of sight away, pretending to admire the crystalline clear and gleaming reflection on the waves of the lake scenery in the distance.

“If I say that you’re not allowed, will you change the appellation?”

Wen Ting Zhou smiled slightly, “No.”

Ruan Xi was speechless, what was the point of asking her then?

“If it makes you happy.”

“If Ruan Ruan calls me Ting Zhou gege, I will be even happier.” Wen Ting Zhou’s gentle gaze landed on her pretty side profile.

Ruan Xi pretended not to hear him.

Wen Ting Zhou chucked soundlessly. The issue with their appellation was thus resolved. In a low voice, he introduced Ruan Xi to several other members in the Wen Family, and subsequently talked about Wen lao-furen.

“Ruan Ruan, zu mu is currently in the Junzhu Residence. If you wish to pay your respects and greet zu mu, I can bring you over later.”

For full disclosure, Ruan Xi had attended the flower banquet because she had been invited; whether she greeted Wen lao-furen or not was of no consequence.

However, for the sake of expressing how highly he regarded her, Wen Ting Zhou told Ruan Xi about it and asked for her opinion, lest it caused a preoccupation in her heart.

When Ruan Xi heard Wen Ting Zhou mentioning the possibility of greeting Wen lao-furen, she found it hard to make a decision.

Not only was Wen lao-furen the Lao Furen who held the greatest seniority within the Wen Family, she was also a Junzhu from the Imperial Family. If she was going to pay her respect, she had to be more solemn and restrained.

Noting that Ruan Xi was hesitating between her options, Wen Ting Zhou dispelled that thought since he understood her apprehensions. Rather vexed, he said, “It’s my fault too. Today isn’t a good day to greet the elders. It will be zu mu’s major birthday next month, I’ll bring you to greet zu mu then.”

Ruan Xi felt Wen Ting Zhou’s consideration, which made her heart warm slightly as she smiled and agreed.

“Alright.”

Seeing that it was going to be high noon soon, the pair went back to the big flower garden together.

The big flower garden was still bustling with noise and excitement. Ruan Xi saw Mu Qing Ci and Ruan san niang at a glance. There was no other option; the two of them were too conspicuous and she managed to find them in a short moment’s work.

Upon careful scrutiny, she realised that they had freshened up their appearance, but the stains on the jackets and skirts could not be concealed, and said stains were attracting countless of puzzled gazes.

Ruan Xi: “……”

What kind of setting were they in? Why was Ruan san niang and Mu Qing Ci still wearing their dirtied clothes? It was unlikely for Wen Jing Ru to commit such a mistake, so Ruan Xi quickly beckoned a maidservant to make an inquiry.

Upon receiving her answer, Ruan Xi became utterly speechless.

It turns out the maidservants of the Junzhu Residence did ask the two in question to go to the wing-room to change their clothes, but Ruan san niang and Mu Qing Ci had rejected them at the same time.

As transmigrators, the pair had the same brain wavelength, and they felt that an accident was most likely going to happen if they went to the wing-room to change their clothes.

The maidservants had tried to persuade them several times, and as the host, Wen Jing Ru had even stepped forward to persuade them afterwards.

Mu Qing Ci’s and Ruan san niang’s opinion remained consistent; neither of them wanted to provoke trouble.

Given their actions, however, they were now receiving numerous strange stares.

Mu Qing Ci was alright since she did not care about the gazes of others as she continued to enjoy the delicious tea and pastries.

Whereas Ruan san niang failed to do the same; the strange gazes being directed at her made her entire body feel extremely uncomfortable and her mood was dangling on the edge. Prior to this, she had abandoned Mu Qing Ci to hug the Fourth Prince’s thick golden thigh, but she did manage to catch a shadow of him.

She wanted to leave in advance right now, but she was unreconciled. Once she came back, she started to brush up on Mu Qing CI’s good feelings.

She refused to end up empty from both sides.

Meanwhile, Mu Qing Ci was rendered completely speechless by her new friend Ruan Ning’s ineffectual brain. After trying to convince her a few times, she stopped, deciding to focus on enjoying the delicacies.

The culinary skills of the Junzhu Residence’s main kitchen was incredibly superb. Given how few and far between each visit to such a place was, she would be eating a loss if she did not eat more.

And yet, it just had to be this exact moment where the exceedingly foul tempered Ruan san niang saw her fourth sister and Wen gongzi returning from the rendezvous from who knew where. Her visage became even uglier and she could not resist glaring at her fourth sister viciously.

Ruan Xi returned her glare from afar, displaying a smile. Ever since they had an acrimonious falling out, Ruan san niang no longer bothered with pretences in front of her.

After witnessing how Ruan san niang unintentionally pitted the female protagonist, Ruan Xi felt that it was better for her to maintain her distance from Ruan san niang.

“Tang ge, si niang, both of you are back. Did you enjoy yourselves?”

When Wen Jing Ru saw the pair making their return, she quickly smiled and welcomed them, blinking her eyes at her tang ge mischievously.

Wen Ting Zhou smiled wordlessly.

Wen Jing Ru found his reaction lacking so she pulled Ruan Xi to one of the corners of the flower sea, avoiding Wen Ting Zhou as she asked in a discreet manner: “Si niang, have you held hands with tang ge?”

Ruan Xi could not help but laugh in the face of Wen Jing Ru asking her about the small development of hand holding in such a secretive manner. With a serious expression, she whispered back: “Not yet, your tang ge is timid.”

The pair’s secretive talk was heard by the martial arts practitioner Wen Ting Zhou.

Timid?

Wen Ting Zhou’s eyes became serene and hidden in depth instantaneously, the danger hanging off the corners of his mouth increasing.

Wen Jing Ru widened her eyes, “No way, tang ge doesn’t even dare to hold hands?!”

Ruan Xi suppressed her laughter, “Yeah.”

Wen Jing Ru gave Ruan Xi a sympathetic look. Harbouring some experience, she whispered back: “Si niang, there’s something really wrong with tang ge’s condition. I think it would be best if you tested tang ge a little.

“Tang ge is already eighteen going nineteen, and yet he’s completely devoid of company, doesn’t have a single woman, and even the servants of Harmonious Dwelling are all men. I’ve long suspected that tang ge isn’t interested in women, but that suspicion perished when I heard of your engagement. However, from the look of things now, it seems like it still warrants a great deal of doubt.”

As Ruan Xi tried her best to suppress her laughter, she inwardly mused about how much Wen Jing Ru seemed to know. To make a show of her earnestness, she nodded in in agreement. “You speak reasonably.”

It certainly was with reason; the Wen Ting Zhou from the novel had remained unmarried his entire life.

Truth to be told, she had the same suspicions, but after interacting with Wen Ting Zhou three times, she felt that it was complete nonsense.

It was highly likely that there was a hidden plot somewhere.

After all, he was not the protagonist. The information concerning Wen Ting Zhou in the book did not amount to much, since he was only referred to in a few lines.

Wen Ting Zhou: “……”

Very good, he would remember his tang mei. Furthermore, he wanted to ask her fiancé what kind of nonsense he had been teaching her.

However, he was looking forward to Ruan Ruan’s probing slightly.

After Wen Jing Ru spoke to Ruan Xi privately for some time, she left in a tactful manner.

Following that, Ruan Xi collided with Wen Ting Zhou’s serene, deep, and dark gaze that was harbouring thick smiling intent, and she started feeling a smidgen of guilt for some unknown reason.

“I didn’t expect that you would become so friendly with Jing Ru after just meeting her.” Wen Ting Zhou shot Ruan Xi a smile.

Returning a calm and composed smile, Ruan Xi uttered: “We have a bond, conversing with Jing Ru was very enjoyable.”

The glance that Wen Ting Zhou proceeded to give Ruan Xi was unfathomable.

“It seems like both of you have a lot of common topics.”

Ruan Xi could not shake off the feeling that there was something wrong with Wen Ting Zhou’s gaze, since it was impressing upon her that he knew something. Ruan Xi’s guilt increased, but then she remembered that she had been whispering to Wen Jing Ru a good distance away from Wen Ting Zhou, which meant that he should not have heard anything.

Hence, she nodded her head calmly.

Wen Ting Zhou did not continue to pursue the topic but he found the entire ordeal funny in his heart. Ruan Ruan was being a lying and naughty yatou.

From afar, Li Xiang Xiang was wearing a sweet-tempered smile as she conversed with the other noble daughters, and her gaze would shift over to Ruan Xi intermittently.

She felt more and more upset the longer she looked.

Li Jing Cheng furrowed his eyebrows imperceptibly upon noticing her actions. He hoped that their paternal grandfather would quickly settle Xiang Xiang’s marriage matter.

If only to break his younger sister’s constant pining for Zi Run.

Once midday arrived, the Junzhu Residence prepared a sumptuous lunch. After partaking in their lunch, Wen Ting Zhou and Wen Jing Ru brought Ruan Xi along to introduce her to several noble daughters and descendants from prominent and illustrious families.

With the importance that Wen Ting Zhou and Wen Jing Ru were attaching to her, and Ruan Xi’s magnanimity and calmness as she adopted an appropriate style of conversation, the impressions that these noble daughters and children from aristocratic families had of her were rather decent, and their attitude was respectful and amiable.

Meanwhile, Ruan san niang became all the more jealous when she saw her fourth sister handling the interactions skilfully and with ease. She lowered her head to look at her own appearance, and she suddenly regretted dressing up like this to attend the banquet.

游刃有余 (pinyin: you ren you yu) – lit. handling a butcher’s cleaver with ease.

Apart from becoming friends with Mu Qing Ci today and recommending the prompt-book she wrote, she had earned nothing from her attendance today.

Mu Qing Ci even offended the Fourth Prince, and her future was hanging in the balance.

She wanted to hug the Fourth Prince’s thick gold thigh but she failed.

Ruan san niang was exceedingly dissatisfied.

She was a transmigrator with golden fingers. After her rebirth, she only managed to protect the good marriage that belonged to her, while the rest was becoming increasingly worse.

Ruan san niang was close to exploding in anger.

After the flower banquet concluded, Wen Ting Zhou still rode his horse to escort Ruan Xi back to her residence, although there was an additional Ruan san niang on the trip back. She was not leaving with her fellow sister Shen xiaojie because going back did not require an invitation. Hence, she specifically waited for Ruan Xi at the main entrance.

“Si mei, we are returning to the residence together.” Ruan san niang’s eyes brightened upon seeing her fourth sister and Wen gongzi walk out, and she walked over to them smilingly.

Ruan Xi stared at the thick-skinned Ruan san niang, not knowing how to reply to her. Then she looked at the surrounding noble ladies who were poking their heads out of their horse carriages before she nodded and agreed.

“Alright.”

Ruan san niang, now perfectly content, stepped onto her horse carriage and enjoyed the Wen Family’s escort under their guards.

The horse carriages returned to the Earl Chengyi Residence smoothly. After Ruan san niang stepped off the horse carriage, she plastered a fake smile and thanked Wen Ting Zhou who was on horseback before she entered the residence in a hurried fashion.

Having to watch her fourth sister and Wen gongzi display their affection throughout the entire journey was equivalent to ten thousand damage points to the lonely Ruan san niang. She did not want to see them ever again.

Fortunately, she heard a piece of news today. The Furen of the Marquis Huaiyang’s shizi had just given birth to the eldest legitimate son yesterday, which meant that tomorrow was the third day bath, and she was planning to meet Qi Yue An in the name of attending the Third Day Bath Banquet.

世子 (pinyin: shi zi) – the heir apparent of a noble house.

She did not believe the fact that Qi Yue An was unwilling to reply to her letters in the slightest, he must have failed to receive it.

This was what Ruan san niang thought, full of confidence.

After Ruan san niang departed, Wen Ting Zhou unexpectedly flipped off his fine steed, walking up to Ruan Xi, who had just alighted from her horse carriage, in large strides. And in front of Mama Lin and Su Yu, he suddenly extended his hand to pull Ruan Xi into his embrace, his warm thin lips carelessly brushing across her forehead as he spoke in a low voice that was tinged with a hint of laughter.

“Ruan Ruan, actually I’m not timid at all!”
