After Ruan Xi’s speechlessness passed, she felt like the power of the original plot was exerting its influence. The male and female protagonist might have missed their first intersection, but there was bound to be a second time. Of course, it would be better if Ruan san niang was absent.

Once she remembered Ruan san niang‘s sheer propensity to squander, Ruan Xi felt her head hurting.

“Ruan Ruan, let’s go to a different place.”

Wen Ting Zhou immediately halted in his footsteps, peering at the distant Fourth Prince whose face was completely black. His mouth thinned as he held Ruan Xi’s smaller hand, wanting to turn around and leave. He finally had the chance to spend time with Ruan Ruan alone after much difficulty; he did not want to waste it on irrelevant people.

“Okay.”

Wen Ting Zhou’s words matched her intentions, so Ruan Xi promptly nodded her head in agreement. After Wen lao-furen‘s longevity feast concluded this time around, Wen Ting Zhou would be participating in the upcoming metropolitan civil service examination. Let alone meeting, it was highly likely that their letter exchange would be petering off.

She cherished the chances she had alone with Wen Ting Zhou greatly.

“Hm, Ting Zhou, you and your little fiancée are having a rendezvous here?

“Oh, it’s not just one pair, the Fourth Prince is here too, and with two pretty young ladies. Indeed, he has a lot of good fortune in love affairs.”

Qin-Wen shi‘s voice rang out abruptly, to which Ruan Xi inwardly thought that this was bad. She raised his head to look at Wen Ting Zhou, and he responded by squeezing her palm, smiling helplessly.

“It seems like we won’t have the chance to be alone.”

When Mu Qing Ci heard Qin-Wen shi‘s voice in the distance, she sighed in relief internally. She merely wanted to have some time alone to take a breather, and she specifically looked for a secluded place to enjoy the quiet, but who could have thought that the Fourth Prince would come to this place, and there would be Ruan san niang too, since she was tailing the Fourth Prince?

Mu Qing Ci hid herself immediately. She was originally well-hidden, but who could have expected that the Fourth Prince would have such keen senses upon his arrival?

In a cold voice, he shouted:

“Who is there, come out!”

Trembling with fear, Mu Qing Ci came out with a lowered head to give the Fourth Prince a bow.

“Paying respect to the Fourth Prince.”

She kept her head lowered the entire time, deathly afraid that the Fourth Prince would recognise her. Mu Qing Ci felt like she had a recurring conflict with the Junzhu Residence. During their first encounter, she had stepped on her own skirt and fell in front of the Fourth Prince, causing her steamed bun to fly and smack the Fourth Prince in the face.

This time around, she bumped into the Fourth Prince again.

Mu Qing Ci’s only consolation was that she was not holding any food in her hands this time around, so an accident was unlikely to occur.

The Fourth Prince did not recognise the delicate and naive young lady in front of him as hummed indifferently in response.

Mu Qing Ci decided to take her leave.

At this moment, Ruan san niang jumped out anxiously.

“Qing Ci, you’re here too, how coincidental.” In her heart, however, she was actually muttering about how much affinity Mu Qing Ci and the Fourth Prince had.

She had secretly followed the Fourth Prince here, but Mu Qing Ci had left earlier than her and the Fourth Prince, and yet they still managed to meet. If that was not predestined affinity, what was it?

However, her top priority was hugging the Fourth Prince’s big gold thighs.

“Ruan Ning has seen the Fourth Prince. Fourth Prince, there has been hearsay that you are holding a post in the Ministry of Revenue, and I have a simple accounting method here…”

In the instant where the Fourth Prince saw Ruan san niang, and heard her call the delicate and simple-looking young lady Qing Ci, he abruptly remembered that shameful incident, and his handsome face darkened instantaneously.

It was these two again.

“Shut up!”

He did not want to acknowledge Ruan san niang at all. The Fourth Prince was about to flick his sleeves and leave when he noticed the movements at the side and heard Qin-Wen shi’s voice.

His ice-cold eyes met Wen Ting Zhou’s gaze which seemed slightly indifferent, and then he glanced past his and Ruan si xiaojie’s interlaced hands.

A small fluctuation flickered past the bottom of the Fourth Prince’s eyes.

Qin-Wen shi’s voice was very loud. Not long after, sparse voices travelled over, making it apparent that someone had heard Qin-Wen shi’s voice, and was coming over to watch the commotion.

Mu Qing Ci felt a wave of panic. There was an instance where she unintentionally overheard the original owner’s father and Mu furen arguing, and they wanted to send her and a few concubine-born sisters to the Princes’ back courtyards to be their concubines.

Mu Qing Ci had felt like there was thunder in the clear skies back then.

Now that she had chanced upon the Fourth Prince, and recalled her cheap father’s schemes, she felt like she was going to meet with misfortune soon.

“Fourth Prince, Qing Ci will be taking her leave.” Mu Qing Ci bowed hastily, not taking heed of the Fourth Prince’s complexion because she wanted to run before anyone arrived.

Since this was a hard-found chance to talk to the Fourth Prince, Ruan san niang was infuriated by Qin-Wen shi’s large vocal cord because it had attracted over more people. Initially, she was surprised that Wen gongzi and her fourth sister had come to this place, but she could no longer care for them now. However, why was Qing Ci being such an inconvenience?

Her courage was too lacking.

Ruan san niang was not happy. She did not have the intention to break off her engagement with Qi Yue An yet, and even if she was going to break it off, she had to occupy the dominant position. Furthermore, she did not want to be left alone, lest she was pressed with the nasty reputation of trying to seduce the Fourth Prince.

If Mu Qing Ci was not around, what was going to happen to her reputation?

“Aiya, Qing Ci, why are you so anxious about leaving?” Ruan san niang immediately extended her hand to stop Mu Qing Ci from running once she was done speaking.

Mu Qing Ci desperately wanted to run, and just as she was turning around, Ruan san niang suddenly grabbed hold of her arm, which made her fall into the Fourth Prince’s embrace once she lost her equilibrium.

Letting out a muffled groan, Mu Qing Ci’s hands reflexively hugged the Fourth Prince’s waist to stabilise her body.

It was unknown if the power of plot was working its mischief, but the people who wanted to watch the commotion after being drawn over by Qin-Wen shi’s voice happened to catch a glimpse of this scene. Upon witnessing Mu Qing Ci hugging the Fourth Prince, they started whispering among themselves.

“Skies above, this… is too audacious.”

“It’s a young lady from the Mu Family, no wonder.”

“The Fourth Prince’s demeanour is terribly frightening.”

“The young ladies of the Mu Family are truly shameless, they actually resorted to such publicly indecent tactics that could ruin their innocence just for the sake of hanging onto the Fourth Prince.”

When the despising and disdainful voices filtered to her ears, Mu Qing Ci felt her head explode. She swiftly jumped out of the Fourth Prince’s arm, neither daring to look at the Fourth Prince’s complexion, nor ask for mercy.

Done for, she was done for.

Mu Qing Ci could sense the Fourth Prince’s turbulent anger. Her entire body started shaking, and her face was the colour of ash.

Ruan san niang did not anticipate that such a thing would occur when she was only pulling on Mu Qing Ci. As she listened to the people in the distance scolding Mu Qing Ci for being shameless, she felt guilty in her heart, so she shrank to the side, not daring to utter a word.

Ruan Xi was dumbstruck as she watched the bizarre happenings, finding this abnormal development familiar.

It took her a moment to recall it. This was supposed to be the scene of the male and female protagonist’s first encounter.

The first time was spoiled by Ruan san niang, but Ruan san niang had pulled it back to the original route this time around, and it was witnessed by even more people.

Qin-Wen shi had also been one of the helping hands.

Poor Mu Qing Ci.

She met an unreliable person like Ruan san niang.

“Ruan Ruan, stay further away from that san jie of yours in the future.”

As Wen Ting Zhou instructed his little fiancée in a serious manner, he silently sympathised with the Fourth Prince.

The pitiful Fourth Prince might have escaped the first time, but he was still tangled with a daughter from the Mu Family in the end.

This Ruan san xiaojie was an actual calamity.

Ruan Xi nodded, “Mn, I’ll listen to you.”

Her position in the original novel was different from Ruan san niang: Ruan san niang was an important female supporting character, whereas she was a soy sauce buyer female supporting character that scarcely showed her face. There was no narrative force pulling them together, but it could not stand against the fact that Ruan san niang was her third older sister, and her destructive capabilities were very strong.

打酱油 (pinyin: da jiang you) – To be a ‘soy sauce buyer’ in a novel is to be an inconsequential extra, wherein whatever happens is ‘none of my business’.

This was especially so, since she realised that both the Fourth Prince and Mu Qing Ci desired to leave this secluded area, but Ruan san niang had insisted on sticking a foot in.

It was highly likely that Ruan san niang would only stop after Mu Qing Ci entered the male protagonist’s back courtyard.

“Ting Zhou da ge, where are the Fourth Prince’s personal eunuch and guards, why did he come here alone?”

Ruan Xi could not resist asking in a small voice. This was too illogical, she silently roasted.

“Maybe the Fourth Prince wanted to while his cares away alone.” Wen Ting Zhou had similarly felt that something was amiss early on.

The Fourth Prince would usually have people following him no matter where he went, and there was a young eunuch following him back at the flower banquet at least. In this instance, there was not even a single one.

It did not resemble the Fourth Prince’s style at all.

Ruan Xi: “……”

It was obvious at a glance that the Fourth Prince was not that type of person. After pondering briefly, she reckoned that the power of the plot was much more trustworthy.

At this moment, Qin-Wen shi had already walked over with her younger and older maidservants, as well as a group of people, at a pace that was neither fast nor slow. In high spirits, she looked at the good show happening in the distance as she clicked her tongue twice audibly.

“Gu mu, why did you come out?” Wen Ting Zhou asked with a smile.

姑母 (pinyin: gu mu) – paternal aunt, father’s sister.

“If I didn’t come out, would I be able to see such a good show?” Qin-Wen shi watched the commotion with a crinkle-eyed smile, but her gaze lingering on his and Ruan Xi’s interlaced hands.

The corners of Ruan Xi’s mouth jerked. Pulling her hand away with due haste, she bowed to Qin-Wen shi with respectful and feminine obeisance.

“Ruan Xi has seen Qin furen.”

“We’re from the same family, no need for such courtesies. Let’s continue watching the show.” Qin-Wen shi waved her hand.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Is it really alright that you’re watching the show so offhandedly? Don’t you see the strange looks of the people around you?

The Fourth Prince was diffusing an ice-cold imposing manner from his entire body and his handsome face was so frigid it was frightening, like storm clouds were faintly approaching and troubles lied ahead. He did not expect that his impulsive decision to send away his guards for a brief respite, would lead to such a thing happening.

At this moment, his guards finally rushed over.

The Fourth Prince did not spare the two ladies another glance. His gaze carelessly roved over to Wen Ting Zhou before he left with large strides.

At most, there would be another woman in his back courtyard.

He would be settling this debt with the Mu Family sooner or later.

When Ruan san niang saw her big gold thigh the Fourth Prince leave, she wanted to chase after him, but after seeing the ghastly pale Mu Qing Ci and the surrounding gazes, she gritted her teeth and stopped moving.

That damnable Qin-Wen shi, she spoiled her good matters!

She did not know when would be the next time she would see the Fourth Prince, how vile!

Ruan san niang abhorred Qin-Wen shi to death.

Then, they heard the news that Mu furen had already brought her entourage of servants over.

It was going to be another big show.

“Ruan Ruan, let us leave.” Wen Ting Zhou did not plan on staying here to watch the continuation.

Ruan Xi nodded.

The pair bid farewell to Wen-Qin shi. Since Wen-Qin shi was still spectating the commotion, she did not bother with the two, only waving her hand to let them leave.

Wen Ting Zhou and Ruan Xi pretended that the surrounding gazes were non-existent as they departed in a confident manner.

This time around, Wen Ting Zhou brought Ruan Xi to a quiet and elegant small flower garden. Once the servants glimpsed Wen gongzi and Ruan si xiaojie, they bowed tactfully and left, leaving the small flower garden to them.

“There’s finally no one around. I’ll be participating in the metropolitan civil service examination in a few days, Ruan Ruan, can you give me a hug of encouragement?”

Wen Ting Zhou fixed his eyes on Ruan Xi, a faint smear of expectation seeping into his soft and gentle gaze.

Ruan Xi met his smile-tinged eyes, her heart missing a beat as a thin layer of blush dusted her pretty face.

“Sure.”

A wave of delight surged in Wen Ting Zhou’s heart, and he could not wait to bring Ruan Xi into his embrace.

“Ruan Ruan, I’m overjoyed.”

Quietly, Ruan Xi leaned on his chest, raising her hands to hug his thin but sturdy waist. She could hear his heart beating faster abruptly, and feel his scorching hot body temperature, which made her cheeks become even hotter.

The pair hugged each other quietly.

Shortly after, the heat on Ruan Xi’s cheeks receded slightly. She raised her head to peer at Wen Ting Zhou’s handsome visage which was well within reach before she coughed gently and opened her mouth with some bashfulness.

“Ting Zhou da ge, congratulations on becoming a successful candidate in the imperial civil service examinations in advance.”

Wen Ting Zhou lowered her head to meet her limpid bright eyes. Her cheeks were still stained with an existing blush. The pit of his stomach lurched and his gaze became unexpectedly obscure as he suddenly pressed his forehead against hers, his thin lips just inches away from touching Ruan Xi’s red lips.

“Ruan Ruan, there are four great joys in life, but I don’t have a single joy in my life right now. I truly hope that when I become a successful candidate in the imperial civil service examinations, I can marry you across the door.”

四大喜 (pinyin: si da xi) – The four great joys in life are: a welcomed rain after a long drought/satisfying a long-felt need, meeting an old friend in a distant land, the wedding night, and succeeding in the imperial examinations. It comes from Poem of Child Prodigy: Four Joys.

With Wen Ting Zhou’s abrupt and intimate gesture of pressing their foreheads together, Ruan Xi’s cheeks flushed red instantaneously. All her blood was boiling, her heart was beating so quickly it was threatening to jump out from her chest, but there were some vague expectations in her heart even though she did not know what she was expecting. When she suddenly heard Wen Ting Zhou talking about the four great joys in life, her eyelashes trembled involuntarily, and she immediately snapped back to her reverie and fumbled for a reply.

“I… My hair-tying ceremony is next year.”

及笄 (pinyin: ji ji) – a coming-of-age ceremony where a girl’s hair is bound up to signify that she is fifteen and of marriageable age.

Wen Ting Zhou hugged the delicate body in his arms tighter, his lips curling up happily as he chuckled soundlessly. Did Ruan Ruan know what she was saying?

“Mn, once your hair-tying ceremony is done, I will marry you across the door.”

Upon observing the mirth brimming in his eyes, Ruan Xi immediately realised what she had just said. Her cheeks became so red they were going to drip blood, and she fervently wished she could find a crack in the ground to squeeze into.
