Clad in a dark brocade robe, Wen Ting Zhou stepped off his horse carriage. With his slender and tall figure, handsome demeanour, and his every gesture befitting of a noble son from a prominent family, he immediately attracted the crowd’s eyes once he appeared.

As his gongzi was stepping off the horse carriage, Zhang Qing immediately held up a wax paper umbrella to shelter him from the fine drizzle.

“Gongzi, it’s still raining outside, why aren’t yõu staying inside the horse carriage?”

The corners of Wen Ting Zhou’s lips hooked up, his gaze wandering in the direction of where Ruan Xi’s horse carriage had stopped. When he met Ruan Xi’s elated gaze, he revealed a faint smile in return.

“Zhang Qing, wait here, I’ll be leaving to do something for a while.”

Zhang Qing complied before he glanced in the direction that his gongzi was leaving in, and he happened to see Earl Chengyi Residence’s Ruan da gongzi. He came to a sudden realisation, it turns out that Ruan si xiaojie was also here.

Dimly, Zhang Qing laughed in secret.

From afar, Wen gongzi held onto a wax paper umbrella as he walked over with unhurried strides, ignoring the constant obscure looks that were being sent his way from the surrounding horse carriages. This was the first time Ruan Xi had seen a man looking so elegant and noble as he held onto a wax paper umbrella, and precisely because this man was her fiancé, her disappointment of a heart started beating harder.

Su Yu and Su Zhu covered their mouths and giggled furtively upon seeing their Young Lady’s appearance.

Ruan Yu Wen, who had been waiting for a long time, promptly greeted Wen Ting Zhou when he walked over.

“Wen gongzi, si mei is inside the horse carriage.”

“Many thanks.” Wen Ting Zhou smiled and nodded his head, exchanging a look that conveyed that both of them were well-aware.

Ruan Yu Wen suppressed the palpitations at the bottom of his heart. Quite sensibly, he said, “Time is limited, I won’t be disturbing Wen gongzi and si mei then.”

Wen Ting Zhou smiled as he hummed in response, striding to the front of Ruan Xi’s horse carriage.

“Ruan Ruan, you’re here.”

Ruan Xi pulled aside her carriage curtain and propped herself on the carriage window, shooting Wen Ting Zhou a witty grin.

“Indeed, I haven’t been outside the residence much despite being at this age. Since this is a hard-found chance to witness a grand occasion like the metropolitan examination, of course I couldn’t miss it. Mn, maybe I could see you in the passing too, and give you some verbal encouragement.”

Wen Ting Zhou raised his eyebrow slightly, the edges of his mouth curling up, “Just verbal encouragement?”

“Yes.” Ruan Xi nodded to prove her earnestness. Her eyes carelessly skated past the fish and lotus sachet dangling from his waist before she paused momentarily.

When she recalled how she had given Ting Zhou da ge that sachet under Mama Lin’s suggestion while being ignorant to the meaning, her face heated up quietly.

What kind of mood was Ting Zhou da ge in when he received that sachet?

Wen Ting Zhou laughed in his heart. Ruan Ruan was honestly adorable when she was being delicate and devious. However, he pretended to reveal a disappointed expression on his handsome face. “Is that so? And here I was hoping that Ruan Ruan would give me a surprise.”

“Young Lady, didn’t yõu specially plait a double happiness knot (囍) in hopes that Wen gongzi would pass brilliantly?” Su Yu tore down the figurative stage.

“Yeah, Young Lady, Wen gongzi is waiting for yõur surprise.” Su Zhu was also sitting at the side with her mouth covered as she giggled secretly.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Wen Ting Zhou laughed softly, looking at Ruan Xi with a gentle gaze. “Ruan Ruan…”

Wordlessly, Ruan Xi glanced at her maidservants who ‘lived off her but secretly helped another’, before she took out the plaited double happiness that wished him the best of luck for the examinations.

It was a complex knot, and it looked particularly exquisite and pretty.

Wen Ting Zhou was quite fond of it. After praising it, he deliberately hung it together with the fish and lotus sachet. His slender and long fingers grazed the double happiness knot before he gave Ruan Xi a smile that was deep with meaning.

“Ruan Ruan, it seems like you still remember the four great joys in life that I talked about. You can set your heart at ease, I will ensure that your wish comes true.”

A wave of heat swept across Ruan Xi’s pretty face, and she could not resist glaring at Wen Ting Zhou.

He clearly knew that the double happiness knot did not intend on that meaning, and yet he was twisting it on purpose!

Wen Ting Zhou’s lips quirked up. He looked deeply at the rosy blush on her cheeks, his eyes darkening.

Suddenly, a familiar and resounding female voice ripped through the horizon, travelling to everyone’s ears.

“Save me, someone is trying to kill me!”

Ruan Xi was gobsmacked and she started doubting if she was having auditory hallucinations, because she actually felt that the female voice was Ruan san niang’s voice.

At this moment, a staggering, wretched-looking figure that was running for her life appeared in the distance, and a few people who were dressed and masked in black were persistently pursuing her in an attempt to kill her.

“Da ge, si mei, I’m Ruan Ning, save me, someone….. Someone is trying to kill me!”

A wave of disturbance engulfed the crowd.

The government workmen, imperial guards, and candidates standing outside the examination hall’s gates were all stunned. Under the full light of day, someone was actually attempting to assassinate someone on the streets.

Ruan Ning… What a familiar-sounding name.

Wasn’t that the Third Young Lady of the Ruan Family from Earl Chengyi Residence? The book ‘Getting Rich, Being Promoted, Marrying a Beauty’ that she wrote was particularly interesting.

The young candidates who admired Ruan san niang revealed worried expressions in succession.

Ruan Xi’s complexion congealed, and before Ruan Yu Wen came back to his senses, she commanded the surrounding guards to save her in a loud voice.

“Go and save her quickly!”

The guards accepted their orders and darted forward swiftly. The pursuing men in black realised that something was wrong, so they proceeded to scatter and flee.

Seeing that her assailants had run off, Ruan san niang felt her stretched taut nerves loosen. Completely drained, she collapsed to the ground, looking extremely wretched but her eyes were full of terror and rapture that came from gaining a new lease of life.

If it were not for her abandoning the horse carriage and running for the crowd, she feared that she would have lost her life early on.

This never happened in her past life.

Was it because she had tarnished the Mu Family’s reputation through Mu Qing Ci, which led to them hiring someone to chase her down and kill her?

Ruan san niang felt that it was truly the case the more she thought about it. Her eyes were teeming with fury. How despicable; apart from Mu Qing Ci, not a single person in the Mu Family was good.

“Third Young Lady, the Oldest Young Master and the Fourth Young Lady are in front, please go over.”

The guards bowed to Ruan san niang in a deferential manner as she remained slumped on the ground. Men and women should not touch hands when they were giving or receiving things; they did not dare to step forward and support her by the arm, so they could only be of disservice to the Third Young Lady.

It was only then that Ruan Xi remembered the sorry figure she was cutting. As she looked at the vast crowd surrounding her, and recalled how she had screamed in her anxiety, she felt her face become scorching hot. It was highly likely that everyone knew who she was.

She… She just threw all her face in front of the capital.

That damnable Mu Family.

“Mn.” Ruan san niang looked at the guards weakly but without strength. Standing up, she tidied her messy hair as she concealed the hatred at the bottom of her eyes.

At the present moment, Ruan san niang had already forgotten about Yao Hong who had shielded her so she could flee.

Although Ruan Yu Wen knew that the current Ruan san niang was a counterfeit, he would never expose it blatantly. Instead, he ran over anxiously to lend an arm to support his younger sister.

“San niang, san niang, are you injured anywhere, I’ll bring you to a physician.”

Upon seeing the concern her older brother had for her, like he was burning with anxiety, she finally felt some comfort in her heart.

“I’m not injured, just exhausted.”

“It’s good that you’re alright, it’s good that you’re alright. San niang, why are you here all of a sudden? Where are your guards, why don’t you have a single guard with you?” Ruan Yu Wen frowned.

Since Ruan san niang had just been through a near-death experience, she was currently immersed in her grief and fears. Upon hearing her older brother’s palpable concern, she threw herself into Ruan Yu Wen’s arms, her tears dripping down.

“The guards were all taken by da ge and si mei.”

When his counterfeit younger sister suddenly hugged him, Ruan Yu Wen’s body went rigid for a moment. Then, he released a deep exhale, a hint of complication flashing past his eyes as he raised his hand to pat on her back soothingly. He murmured:

“It’s all over, you’re fine now.”

This chase-and-kill was far too queer.

For a short instant, Ruan Yu Wen questioned if his mother had acted against his counterfeit sister, but he also felt like it was unlikely.

His mother hated the counterfeit for wresting away his younger sister’s body, but she only wanted to torment his counterfeit younger sister, and it was improbable that she would try to kill her.

He felt that the Mu Family bore the highest possibility.

Wen Ting Zhou watched Ruan Yu Wen comfort Ruan san niang from afar, his eyebrows furrowing slightly. “Ruan Ruan, don’t arbitrarily leave the residence in the future, and even if you’re going out, you have to bring a group of guards with you.”

The conjecture he had was quite similar to Ruan Yu Wen’s, since the only people that Ruan san xiaojie had provoked was the Fourth Prince and that Mu xiaojie from the Mu Family.

The Fourth Prince was completely out of the question, which meant that only the Mu Family remained.

The Mu Family had always been rampant in conduct; it was not beyond them to chase someone down the open streets to kill them.

Of course, it could also be that someone who had a feud with the Mu Family that designed this trap, or else, how did a weak young lady like Ruan san xiaojie manage to easily escape her killers’ pursuit?

No one could have predicted that the real culprit was Zhang shi, Ruan san niang’s biological mother.

“Mn, I understand. Ting Zhou da ge, you should go over to prepare. I should be checking on san jie.”

Ruan Xi nodded her obediently before she stepped off the carriage with Su Yu and Su Zhu, and walked over to Ruan san niang.

Wen Ting Zhou nodded to Ruan Yu Wen from afar, then he returned back to the Wen Family’s horse carriage with his wax paper umbrella in hand.

Everyone had joyously gathered to watch the grand occasion that was the imperial civil service examinations, but who could have known such a thing would happen?

The news that Earl Chengyi Residence’s Ruan san xiaojie had been chased and nearly killed on the streets by men in black swiftly propagated like it had wings.

Covertly, everyone was guessing who wanted Ruan san xiaojie’s life, and their spearheads started pointing towards the Mu Family one after another.

After Zhang shi learned that the assassination had failed, she started smashing object until her entire room was littered with the debri, all exasperated and flustered.

The counterfeit was truly tenacious in life.

Mama Gao did not expect that those killers would unexpectedly fail, and she felt discomforted all over.

“Furen, what should we do next, should we continue?”

After Zhang shi was done venting, she glared at Mama Gao with a dark gaze. “What continue? We’ll speak of this in the future, we’ll allow that counterfeit to live for a few more days. Fortunately, the Mu Family is carrying the blame of this failure for us, otherwise…”

Mama Gao fought a shudder.

Presently, Ruan san niang was sitting in the horse carriage with Ruan Xi to head back to the residence, and the carriage interiors were utterly quiet.

Su Yu and Su Zhu had already helped Ruan san niang tidy her messy hair and wiped away the dirt and grime on her face, hence, Ruan san niang did not look as wretched anymore.

Ruan san niang looked at her neat and stunningly beautiful fourth sister, then at the absolute sorry figure she was cutting, her countenance distorting for an instant. As the jealousy and disequilibrium in her heart heightened, she could not restrain herself from shooting Ruan Xi a vicious glare.

Ruan Xi caught a glimpse of Ruan san niang’s expression from the corner of her eyes, inwardly sneering. She was wrong for worrying about whether Ruan san niang would be afflicted with a psychological shadow due to her near-death experience; who knew that jealousy could overthrow fear, such that she still had the headspace to be jealous of others.

She had worried for nothing.

After returning to the Earl Residence, Ruan san niang looked for Zhang shi cry and lament fiercely, and she failed to notice Zhang shi’s ominous and dark gaze.

A bunch of wastrels.

They did not even succeed in harming a single hair on the counterfeit’s head.

Meanwhile, Ruan Xi returned to Limpid Heart Garden with a pensive look on her face.

Something was wrong, something was incredibly out-of-sorts.

“Su Yu, Su Zhu, who could have hired someone to kill san jie?”

Su Yu looked at her Young Lady strangely, “Apart from the Mu Family, who else could it be? With the Third Young Lady’s single tug, not only did she ruin Mu xiaojie’s reputation, the reputations of all the ladies within the Mu Family were also affected. Isn’t it very normal for the Mu Family to want to kill the Third Young Lady, especially when they have a motivation to kill?”

“Agreed. Young Lady, it was definitely the Mu Family who acted against the Third Young Lady.”

Su Zhu concurred.

As Ruan Xi cupped her hot tea, she mumbled, “It’s precisely because it’s too normal that something is wrong.”

And the particular fact that Ruan san niang did not have a single injury on her body, made everything absurdly strange.

She glanced at the unperturbed Mama Yang. When she was reminded of Mama Yang’s feud with the Mu Family, a thought suddenly occurred to her.

“Is it possible that an enemy of the Mu Family designed this scheme?”

Ruan Xi’s thoughts coincided with Wen Ting Zhou once more.

Su Yu shook her head. “Young Lady, there are probably a lot of people who have the same thoughts as yõu, but if nubi were to give her opinion, it’s definitely the Mu Family.”

“Young Lady, yõu have to be more careful in the future, perhaps the Mu Family is now staring at the Earl Residence.”

Ruan Xi chuckled. Ruan san niang was too good at creating trouble, who knew if she had unintentionally offended someone else.

Ruan Xi stopped thinking about Ruan san niang’s affairs. After she sent a present to console Ruan san niang, she stopped caring, and she quietly stayed in Limpid Heart Garden to listen to the lectures from her two Mamas.

The ruckus of Ruan san niang being chased down was like the wind and rain which pushed the Mu Family to where the wind and rain were the fiercest; the Mu Family was accused of misconduct by the imperial censors, and a number of their sordid misdeeds were aired.

Mu Qing Ci’s days in the Mu Family became even harder.
