After using her system ability, Ruan san niang finally felt like she had come alive again.

She had never experienced hardships in her past two lifetimes, and yet she had broken her legs twice in this lifetime. Thankfully, she had a healing system ability, or else she would have to lie on the wooden bed like a cripple in the imperial prison for a month.

“I must be in serious conflict with enclosure walls.”

Ruan san niang had a psychological shadow when it came to climbing enclosure walls right now, and she patted her chest as the fear continued to linger in her heart.

After dealing with the injuries on her legs, Ruan san niang finally had the luxury of inspecting the prison cell she was being detained in. It was roughly ten square footage, give or take a few, three faces were walls while fire torches burned outside. Since there was a fire pan, it was not damp or gloomy, and it could even be said that it was clean and tidy. There was also a clean blanket on her wooden bed and a toilet in the corner. It was completely different from Ruan san niang‘s imagination, and it could be described as a very comfortable prison cell. But no matter how comfortable it was, it was still the imperial prison which was meant to lock up prisoners. Once Ruan san niang was reminded of that, her pretty face became sinister for some time.

She had lived for three lifetimes: her first lifetime was the most ordinary; her family background was ordinary, her education record were ordinary, and she was just an ordinary university student. After she transmigrated for her second lifetime, she brought along golden fingers and lived the most impressive life, but her death had been a spectacle too horrible to endure. However, while she was alive, she had never suffered a single hardship; she had eaten the delicacies from the land and sea, and wore silks and satin. Whereas the current lifetime she was reborn into was the greatest pit. Qi Yue An, the ex-fiancé she kept, was unexpectedly fond of rouge and powders and indulged in both men and women, whereas her fourth sister continued to have a good life that could induce jealousy in others while her circumstances went from bad to worse, to the point where she was sent to the imperial prison in the end.

Not only did she lose her face big time, but she would also be the target of pointing fingers once she left the imperial prison, and her reputation need not be mentioned since there was none of it left.

Let alone marrying better than her fourth sister, it would be hard for to marry into a prominent or rich family.

The more Ruan san niang thought about it, the angrier she became, and the rims of her eyes gradually reddened from how wronged she felt. Her tears dripped down in big and audible plops. She merely said a few sentences casually, didn’t she? Why was she being arrested and detained in the imperial prison? It was all the Wen Family’s fault, and the Emperor’s for being so narrow-minded and petty, he actually threw a fuss over a woman in the back courtyards.

“Fussing over minor matters, unable to distinguish right and wrong, die early and reincarnate early…”

As tears streamed down from Ruan san niang’s eyes, she cursed the old Emperor with extreme resentment.

Meanwhile, the prison guard was bringing over a physician to help brace Ruan san xiaojie’s legs. But who could have thought that he would see Ruan san xiaojie crying and scolding someone at the same time, looking quite sober in consciousness and spirit. He could not feel the slightest indication of sorrow or desperation from her, and she was neither shouting, screaming, crying nor causing a racket.

Prison guard: “……”

Physician: “……”

When Ruan san niang finally vented all the curses in her system, she finally noticed the prison guard and the physician, and learned that the physician was here to brace her legs with wooden boards. Ruan san niang felt a wave of annoyance; she was already healed for the most part, why would she need those damned braces.

However, she did not dare to reject it, and the loathing she had towards that damnable old Emperor only increased.

On the second day that Ruan san niang was sent to the imperial prison, Ruan Xi managed to obtain permission to visit her, so she brought along some food and clothes to go to the imperial prison to visit Ruan san niang with Zhang shi.

This was the first time Ruan Xi had seen the imperial prison in the ancient-era, and it was a cause for slight shock, since the environment of the imperial prison was far better than she had imagined. However, she came to a realisation that whenever a certain royal clan member or prince committed a wrongdoing, the Emperor would always detain them in the imperial prison, thus Ruan Xi did not feel as surprised anymore.

Even if the imperial family or descendants of the royal clan committed mistakes, they were still part of the imperial family; having some special rights was not strange. The fact that Ruan san niang was being detained in this imperial prison, instead of some kind of court prison, was probably because of the Wen Family, and how she was a noble daughter from an official’s family.

“Mother, with how good the imperial prison’s environment is, it’s unlikely that san jie will suffer any hardships here, yõu can relax your heart now.” Ruan Xi deliberately opened her mouth to poke at Zhang shi’s heart in a vicious manner.

Relax her heart?

She was vehemently wishing that the counterfeit would suffer hardships and torture.

Zhang shi’s complexion was very ugly, but in this kind of imperial prison environment, how would the counterfeit suffer any hardships? She was essentially passing her time here for a month in a leisurely and carefree fashion before returning.

“Ruan si xiaojie speaks correctly, Furen, yõu do not have to worry. Ruan san xiaojie’s legs have been treated by two imperial physicians yesterday, and there will be a physician coming over to check on Ruan san xiaojie’s injuries every other day.”

The prison guard respectfully agreed as he was leading the way.

No one was oblivious to the fact that Ruan san xiaojie was only in prison to go through the motions, hence the jailer did not dare to be negligent.

It was alright when the jailer did not mention it, but once he spoke, Zhang shi felt like vomiting even more. Even though there was a mouthful of old blood lodged in her throat, she still had to squeeze out a smile on the surface.

“San niang has never been at the receiving end of such bitterness, and I thought that she was going to suffer hardships in prison, so I didn’t manage to sleep well for the entire night. One did not expect the Emperor’s benevolence; I can set my heart at ease now.”

As Ruan Xi watched Zhang shi repress her anger, she felt rather delighted in her heart, and her footsteps became a lot lighter.

They walked down the long passageway, took a left turn and ventured even deeper, continuing until they saw a few offenders that were dressed in neat and clean clothes, before they finally reached the prison cell that was detaining Ruan san niang.

Ruan Xi examined the space with some interest. The left side truly deserved to be the imperial prison that detained the imperial family members and descendants of the royal clan that had transgressed. It was simple and comfortable, which was wholly different from the prison cells on the right side which was meant to lock up heavy offenders.

Once the jailer opened the prison cell door, he left, not worried in the least that the broken-legged Ruan san niang would flee.

Zhang shi and Ruan Xi stepped in together.

“Mother, you’re here.”

Ruan san niang was very happy to see Zhang shi. If it were not for the eye-piercing wooden braces on her legs, she would have the strong urge to run over to Zhang shi to lament.

As for her fourth sister, Ruan san niang laughed coldly, she was probably here to ridicule her, she refused to allow her fourth sister to have her way.

“San niang, my unfortunate san niang, you have suffered…” Zhang shi had excellent acting skills; once she saw Ruan san niang, she strode over to hug her and cry.

“Mother, I don’t want to stay in prison, make Father think of a way to get me out quickly…”

Ruan Xi: “……”

She put down the food box and cloth bundle she was holding on the wooden table.

“San jie, Mother was afraid that you would suffer hardships in prison, so she specifically brought quite a few delicious pastries and fruits over. Right, the instant noodles you made were included too.”

After Ruan Xi placed the food on the wooden table beside Ruan san niang’s bed, her golden finger was constantly making itself known without stopping. Tsk tsk, Zhang shi had truly ‘given a lot of thought’ to this, all of the edibles had additional ingredients.

“Why isn’t there any braised duck, si mei, why didn’t you make some braised ducks for me?”

After Ruan san niang and Zhang shi were done crying bitterly and venting, and the former saw that the exceedingly delicious red braised dish made by her fourth sister was not among the brought food, her countenance sank down immediately, and she questioned her in a displeased tone.

Ruan Xi nearly laughed out of anger.

“San jie, if I prepared food for you, would you dare to eat it? And even if you dared to eat it, I wouldn’t make it, lest it gets thrown back at me.”

“Si mei, what do you mean by that?” Ruan san niang exploded in anger.

Indifferent, Ruan Xi looked at Ruan san niang. “San jie is well-aware of my meaning.”

She absolutely refused to commit such a foolish action that could be easily taken advantage of and used to frame her.

“Mother, si mei is bullying me!” Ruan san niang glared at Ruan Xi viciously before she complained to Zhang shi.

Zhang shi took a moment to console the counterfeit before she berated her irately, “Si niang, how could you say that, apologise to san niang immediately.”

She fervently wished that the counterfeit could die, but she could not be negligent on the perfunctory level.

Ruan Xi stared straight at Zhang shi, and refuted Zhang shi for the first time. “Mother, I wasn’t wrong, I will not apologise.”

Zhang shi’s face sank, but she did not order Ruan Xi to apologise again.

Ruan san niang became thoroughly red with anger. That damnable si mei, relying on Wen gongzi’s support to the point where she even dared to defy their Mother’s words.

And the wretched heavens too, for constantly working against her. It actually allowed Wen gongzi to pass the great scholars’ evaluation, which made her fourth sister’s arrogance become more rampant.

The atmosphere in the prison cell plunged into silence instantaneously.

“San jie, don’t say that I don’t have any sisterly feelings. I’ve asked Ting Zhou da ge, and he said that if san jie wants to come out in advance, she can redeem herself through good service.”

Ruan Xi seemed reluctant as she gave her a reminder, but she was actually digging a pit for Ruan san niang.

“However, it’s unlikely for san jie to have an opportunity to redeem herself through good deeds. This prison environment isn’t bad, staying here for a month doesn’t amount to much.”

Ruan Xi stared at Ruan san niang, revealing a resplendent smile.

This was the reason why she came to the imperial prison to visit Ruan san niang today.

Ruan san niang’s heart moved upon hearing that. When she perceived the fact that her fourth sister was deliberately here to make the joke at her expense, she laughed coldly in her heart.

She was a bona fide transmigrator, and she knew how to make a great deal of things. Her fourth sister actually dared to underestimate her, hmpf!

Zhang shi did not mix into their conversation. Truth to be told, she wanted the counterfeit to leave the imperial prison, or else, how was she going to act?

After visiting Ruan san niang, Ruan Xi returned to the Earl Residence in a rather good mood. Perhaps owing to the absent Ruan san niang and her penchant for squandering, the expansive Earl Chengyi Residence became more peaceful by comparison, but the rumours outside did not disappear, so much so that it was showing the inclination to intensify after Wen Ting Zhou’s public evaluation. While it greatly affected the reputation of the ladies from Earl Chengyi Residence, only the Wen Family remained silent the entire time. Since Wen lao-furen was still very satisfied with Ruan Xi, the calculations of those with ulterior motives ended up with nothing once more.

On the other hand, Ruan Yu Wen’s marriage matters were affected. The Furens whom were originally interested in the marriage were no longer as friendly as in the past, which made Zhang shi loathe that filter-less counterfeit to death. Hence, she could only decide on admitting that Shen xiaojie as her son’s wife.

Meanwhile, Ruan Xi was paying attention to Wen Ting Zhou’s palace examination as she was busy making arrangements for the opening of her braised duck store.

At this time, someone told Ruan Xi about the recent news concerning Mama Xu’s son Xu Jin.

Ruan Xi did not expect that, not even two months after Mama Xu’s death, her son Xu Jin would be charged with the crime of conspiring to murder his elder and sued in court by the greedy Xu Family three days ago. After he was beaten by the plank thirty times, all of his wealth was plundered, and he was given a letter breaking off their relations and chased out of the Xu Family.

“Young Lady, nubi reckons that Xu Family must have believed in those nonsensical rumours outside, and assumed that the Young Lady would be abandoned by Wen gongzi, which is why they had such great audacity to act against Xu Jin.”

Ruan Xi’s countenance was freezing cold. The marriage agreement between her and Wen gongzi was still untouched, and yet the Xu Family dared to touch Xu Jin, of whom she was protecting. Did they really think that she, the Fourth Young Lady of this Earl Residence, was dead?

“Su Yu, dispatch someone to arrange for Xu Jin to be brought here, and deal with the Xu Family altogether.”

Their relations were already broken; Xu Jin was no longer part of the Xu Family now, and she did not have to show the Xu Family any mercy.

No matter what was said, Xu Jin was the son of the original owner’s wet nurse, it goes without saying that Ruan Xi had to stick up for him.

“Yes, Young Lady.”

Su Yu had great sympathy for Xu Jin’s predicament, and she hated those greedy and vicious Xu Family members down to her bones.

Ruan Xi thought about the braised duck shop she was opening. Once Xu Jin recovered from his injuries, she could allow Xu Jin to work as a waiter in the braised duck store. She would not make him sign a slave contract, and he could study and take the imperial examinations in the future.

While Su Yu was going over with some people to fetch Xu Jin and deal with the Xu Family, the palace examination had already ended. The rest was just waiting for the Emperor to grade the exam papers and hang up the gold roll of honour.

Ruan Xi’s attention were also placed on the results.

If Wen Ting Zhou was named as the Zhuangyuan by the Emperor himself, he would be the top in all three imperial examinations.

Just as she finished writing a letter, her eyes glanced past the exquisite small wooden loft on the table, and she could not resist stretching her hand out to pinch the long wooden strip switch.

Inside the small wooden loft, the golden pig and white rabbit started to interact lovingly…

The corners of Ruan Xi’s lips raised slightly.

Wen Ting Zhou, whom Ruan Xi was thinking about, had been secretly summoned by Emperor Shengde.

“Look at this information.”

Whenever Emperor Shengde was trying to read the accounts book recently, he was not as strong as he wished; the uncured illness that he had left behind in his early years was starting to relapse, and he was showing symptoms of coughing blood. If this carried on, he would have no way of concealing his medical condition any longer.

As long as there was a single shred of hope, Emperor Shengde was not willing to let it go.

And it was at this moment where Ruan san xiaojie’s abnormality had caught his attention.
