Translator’s Note:

The servants in the Minister Wen Residence call Wen Ting Zhou ‘Da Shaoye’ (oldest young master) because he is the eldest son within the residence, and consequently, as his wife, Ruan Xi is referred to as ‘Da Shao-furen’ (oldest young madam). Please associate these addresses to them from this chapter onwards, since it gets used very frequently!

However, when Ruan Xi’s servants are addressing Wen Ting Zhou, they call him ‘gu ye’ (姑爷) instead, which means son-in-law or their master’s husband in this context, and it is used by the servants from the wife’s family.

After the three ritual kneeling (to Heaven and Earth, to their parents and elders, and to each other) were completed, Ruan Xi was supported into the newlyweds’ room to sit on the edge of the bed. Underneath the red veil, she could perceive the groom’s wedding robes below, and she could sense Wen Ting Zhou’s familiar aura, which made her heartbeat quicken.

“Ruan Ruan, stay in the room and wait first, I’ll be going outside to greet the guests. If you’re hungry, eat something first to pad your stomach.” The bridegroom Wen Ting Zhou said lowly, his voice sonorous and warm.

“Mn, I understand, you can go ahead first.” Ruan Xi said in a light voice as she soothed her beating heart.

Wen Ting Zhou’s mouth curled upwards. He did not expect that he would marry Ruan Ruan so early, but he had to admit that he was extraordinarily pleased and overjoyed in his heart.

“I’ll be going out first then.”

Wen Ting Zhou instructed the maidservants and the Mamas within the room to take good care of Ruan Xi before he left.

A hint of sweetness emerged in Ruan Xi’s heart.

The maidservants and Mamas inside the room were dispatched by Wen furen to accompany the bride, and when they saw the series of actions their Da Shaoye took, the level of respect that they had towards the Da Shao-furen that had recently entered through the doors increased.

Shortly after Wen Ting Zhou departed, a maidservant brought over a plate of tasty-looking pastries as she made a low-sounding inquiry in a respectful manner.

“Da Shao-furen, would yõu like to eat some pastries?”

Ruan Xi only consumed a bowl of bird’s nest porridge to cushion her stomach in the morning, and it was true that she was hungry right now, so she nodded her head.

“Mn.”

After eating a plate of pastries, Su Yu poured a cup of hot tea and brought it over. Ruan Xi did not discover any problems with it as well, hence she drank that cup of hot tea, feeling a lot better in general.

The time quietly elapsed. The sunset colours filled the entire sky outside the window, red like fire. Inside the wedding room, the red candles were burning high as if it was daytime.

Ruan Xi sat upright on the wedding bed with her fair and jade-like hands overlapping, appearing gentle, graceful, and refined.

The Mamas dispatched by Wen furen praised her inwardly. This newly wedded Da Shao-furen was very self-possessed and enduring.

At this time, the sound of servants paying their respects rang out.

“One has seen Da Shaoye, wishing Da Shaoye and Da Shao-furen a long and happy life together, and always be tied with one mind!”

“Reward!”

Happiness was evident in Wen Ting Zhou’s low and deep voice.

“Many thanks Da Shaoye.”

The servants thanked him for the rewards happily, and congratulatory phrases were uttered one after another.

Inside the newlyweds’ room, Ruan Xi roused her spirit and straightened her sitting posture.

The doors to the bridal chambers creaked open, then Wen Ting Zhou stepped in with slow strides while the Mamas and maidservants in the room paid their respects in succession.

“May the bridegroom unmask the bride’s red veil.” The matron of honour said smilingly.

Ruan Xi’s heartbeat soared abruptly, the clenching of her overlapped jade-like hands betraying a faint hint of nervousness.

Wen Ting Zhou took the weighted rods that had red silk tied at the ends, and lifted away the red veil that had a luan and phoenix crying out embroidered on top.

When that heavy veil landed on the ground, it revealed Ruan Xi’s beautiful and dazzling visage, and since she was draped in that exquisite and complicated wedding dress, the contrasting colours made her fair skin whiter than snow. All in all, she was incomparably tender and beautiful.

Wen Ting Zhou’s breath hitched, his pitch-black eyes deepening as a dark fire crackled at the bottom of his eyes faintly.

His Ruan Ruan was truly beautiful.

Wen furen’s maidservants and Mamas were awe-struck.

It had been said that Ruan si xiaojie was exceedingly beautiful; sure enough, the rumours were not fake.

Ruan Xi was unaccustomed to the sudden brightness, which made her blink involuntarily. She lifted her head and happened to meet Wen Ting Zhou’s pitch-black and darkening eyes.

Since Wen Ting Zhou was wearing the crimson robes made for the groom, his elegance and handsomeness became more pronounced, thus displaying his nobility and respectable pedigree.

Ruan Xi’s eyes were filled with astonishment.

Ruan Xi’s astonished gaze put Wen Ting Zhou in a pleased mood, and the curve of lips became wider.

As they stared into each other’s eyes, Ruan Xi’s heart lurched. Her pretty face was stained with a smear of rouge, and time seemed to condense and suspend in that moment.

“Cough cough!” The matron of honour suddenly coughed lightly, interrupting their shared gazes.

“May the groom and bride drink from exchanged cups of wine!”

She did not want to interrupt them on purpose, but there were still ceremonial rites to get through.

Once the matron of honour was done speaking, a maidservant brought over the cups of wine.

Wen Ting Zhou and Ruan Xi came back to their senses. The pair walked up to the wedding table and sat down, each holding one cup of wine as their arms interlocked before they drank from the exchanged wine cups.

Next was the consumption of the offspring dumplings. Under Wen Ting Zhou’s heated gaze, Ruan Xi took a bite of the offspring dumpling that the matron of honour was offering.

In essence the ‘offspring dumplings’ (this is bad translation) are made out of peanuts, chestnuts, red dates, etc., and it is only half-cooked. Hence, when the matron of honour asks if it is raw – ‘生’ (sheng) in Mandarin – she is using a wordplay, because ‘to give birth’ also uses the same character.
Hence, the bride will say that it is ‘raw’ to imply that she will bear offspring.

“Is it raw?” The matron of honour asked with a laugh.

Slightly embarrassed, Ruan Xi replied: “Raw!”

The matron of honour was full of smiles.

The deep fire in Wen Ting Zhou’s eyes only blazed hotter.

Ruan Xi could not ignore that scorching hot gaze, so her beautiful countenance became hotter and redder.

Once the ceremony was completed, the matron of honour, maidservants, and Mamas retreated from the room.

Inside the expansive bridal chamber, only the bride and groom remained. The red candles burned and crackled, the red wax dripping and accumulating in the candle stands below, like the highest quality red jade with its translucent, bright and clear appearance.

Amidst the candlelight, Ruan Xi’s gentle and beautiful face was enveloped in the red glow, which increased her glamour by a few degrees.

“Ruan Ruan, I am very happy today.”

Wen Ting Zhou murmured lowly, a hint of dark hoarseness seeping into his low and deep voice. Abruptly, he pulled her into his embrace, as if he wanted to embed her in his body.

Their bodies were plastered together tightly. The hot air surged up, causing Ruan Xi’s heart to prance and bump around randomly like a young fawn. Her face was as red as fire when she called out to him a small voice:

“Ting Zhou da ge!”

Wen Ting Zhou felt like he was mentally scalded, and his breathing suddenly became quicker.

Without any prior warning, Wen Ting Zhou carried her up horizontally, walked to the side of the bed, and pulled away the red gossamer curtains, before he placed Ruan Xi on the wedding bed.

Crimson wedding sheets, a crimson wedding bed, and Ruan Xi in a crimson wedding dress.

The atmosphere became charming and ambiguous in a short moment’s work.

Wen Ting Zhou’s heart jolted fiercely. A kindling flame flashed past the bottom of his eyes as he recomposed himself. He took off the phoenix coronet on Ruan Xi’s head, loosening the hair that was tied in a bun, thus allowing a head of ebony black and smooth hair to cascade down.

“Ruan Ruan, the skies have darkened, we should be resting.”

Ruan Xi bit her lip subconsciously. She did not know why but she was nervous all of a sudden; her heart was in disorder, and her face was so red it was nearly dripping blood.

Her body had developed extremely well, and her period had started last year. In ancient times, she was already allowed to have sexual intercourse.

Once she thought about the fact that they were going to have sexual intercourse soon, Ruan Xi’s face became flaming hot.

As Wen Ting Zhou observed Ruan Ruan’s bashful reaction, it ignited the kindling spark in his eyes into a flame. He stopped restraining his own desire as he used his flaming hot body to cover hers, pressing Ruan Xi on the soft and large bed and kissed her red lips, sentimental, impatient, and devastatingly domineering. Compared to the previous two kisses which were slightly restrained, there was an additional flavour of sexual lust.

Ruan Xi was slightly flustered and helpless towards the things that was bound to happen, and she could only cling onto Wen Ting Zhou weakly and give into his plundering kiss.

Through their wedding robes, she could distinctively feel Wen Ting Zhou’s scorching hot body and his intense heartbeat.

Their body temperatures climbed up ceaselessly, and their wedding garments were peeled off one by one…

Concealed by the red gossamer curtains, two entangled figures could be faintly discerned on the large bed.

The breathing and groans intermingled, as if they were crooning a moving symphony.

All of a sudden, a girl’s pained gasp travelled out from behind the red curtains.

“Ruan Ruan, don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.”

Within the red gossamer curtains, Wen Ting Zhou muttered breathily next to Ruan Xi’s ear.

“Hurts, Ting Zhou da ge, you… you be gentler.”

Ruan Xi bit her lips, looking at the perspiring handsome face that was well within reach with blurry eyes.

Wen Ting Zhou forcibly leashed the tide of emotion that was surging violently as he lowered his head to kiss Ruan Ruan gently. “Be good, it’ll stop hurting soon.” After saying that, his movements became even gentler.

Gradually, Ruan Xi’s eyebrows relaxed, and she even revealed a pleasured expression.

Upon seeing that, Wen Ting Zhou stopped enduring, and he picked up the speed.

In that brief period of sharp pain and endless pleasure, Ruan Xi finally became a woman that night.

It was unknown how long had passed when everything quietened down. Limp, sore, and dripping with sweat, Ruan Xi was all wrapped up in Wen Ting Zhou’s arms.

Wen Ting Zhou was brimming with tremendous satisfaction in his heart.

Finally, Ruan Ruan had become his wife in truth, and the feeling was so wondrous it was hard to describe.

He focused his warm gaze on the woman in his arms, his eyes landed on the numerous and closely packed marks on her body. Ruan Xi’s skin was fair and delicate, which made the marks more obvious by contrast. Wen Ting Zhou’s gaze darkened.

He had lost control tonight. He had always prided himself in his self-control, and yet he lost control once he met Ruan Xi.

Quietly, Wen Ting Zhou exerted some force to hug her tighter as he asked in a tender and soft voice. “Ruan Ruan, are you alright?”

Embarrassed, Ruan Xi buried her red and heated face in his chest as she replied in a small voice: “It was quite alright, apart from the slight pain at the start.”

Honestly speaking, her first experience felt really good overall.

We Ting Zhou’s mouth corners, feeling proud and satisfied, and a certain part of his body started reacting again.

Ruan Xi: “……”

“Ruan Ruan, let’s do it one more time, is that alright?” Wen Ting Zhou asked in a low voice, kissing her earlobe gently.

Ruan Xi’s cheeks heated up as she nodded her head shyly.

Joy flooded Wen Ting Zhou’s heart, and he immediately pressed her under his body again.

Perhaps because he had his first experience, Wen Ting Zhou was gentler and more restrained this time around.

After that round of pleasure ended, Wen Ting Zhou cherished and sympathised with Ruan Ruan since it was her first time, so he did not ask for more. He wore his inner garments, got off the bed, and went outside briefly to instruct the older woman-servants who were on night duty to send in the hot water in a low voice.

Once the hot water was sent over, Wen Ting Zhou gently carried Ruan Xi and placed her inside the bathtub.

Ruan Xi’s face and body were already red like morning clouds, and under the candlelight illumination, she was so beautiful she took his breath away.

Scorching heat flooded Wen Ting Zhou’s mind. His lower region jerked and twitched again, but he silently moved away to curb that tide of passion.

“Ruan Ruan, sit down and don’t move, I’ll help you wash up.” There was a tint of hoarseness in his sonorous and low voice.

Ruan Xi originally wanted to reject him, but her entire body was sore, limp, and powerless. Hence, she could only tamper her bashfulness and close her eyes.

Wen Ting Zhou’s gaze softened as he laughed soundlessly. Then, he put in the utmost care and effort to help Ruan Xi bath.

Even though the entire process tested his self-control greatly.

She did not know if the two rounds of pleasure had completely exhausted her physical energy, but Ruan Xi fell asleep in the bathtub after a short while.

When Wen Ting Zhou saw her beautiful, sleeping countenance, he felt a wave of distress in his heart. Gently, he carried Ruan Xi out of the bathtub, covering her with a bath towel and then placing her on the bed. He used a soft towel to wipe her body and hair before he personally dressed her in close-fitting clothes, then he tidied himself and allowed the servants to bring out the bathtub.

The red candles inside the bridal chamber crackled and burned as a pair of man and woman held each other as they slept on the wedding bed.

Earl Chengyi Residence. The night was cooling like water.

Ruan san niang stared at the high and suspended moon outside the window. When she thought about how it was her fourth sister’s wedding night, her mood became agitated instantaneously and she could not find sleep.

As she contemplated about her own plans, in addition to the fact that her father was resting in Lin yiniang’s courtyard tonight, Ruan san niang decided to go to main courtyard to discuss it with her mother.

She informed Yao Hong tartly before she rushed to the main courtyard hastily.

Since Ruan san niang was going to enter the imperial palace, her position in the residence was like a floating boat on a rising tide. When the servants in the main courtyard were made aware of the fact that she was looking for their Furen, no one tried to stop her.

Unimpeded, Ruan san niang arrived at the front of Zhang shi’s room door. Coincidentally, Mama Gao happened to be at the toilet out of an urgent need instead of guarding the door. Ruan san niang was about to push open the door and enter but she heard Mama Sun talking about her inside.

Ruan san niang’s eyes shifted. She retracted the hand that was about to push open the door. She wanted to hear what Mama Sun was saying about her, was she bad-mouthing her?
