It was evident that Wen furen did not anticipate that Earl Chengyi Furen would be this vicious and merciless, and her vision suddenly went dark.

Xiao Xi had been afflicted with infertility medicine, with her son’s personality, where was she supposed to get a grandson?

And Lao Furen… What if something bad happens to Lao Furen after she learned of this?

Ruan Xi coughed lightly, shattering the silence in the room. Wen furen snapped her head towards her.

“Xiao Xi, you…”

“Popo, yõu don’t need to be worried. On the day after Husband and I returned to my maternal home, didn’t we go to the Junzhu Residence to visit Lao Furen? Back then, Husband suggested that we should allow the two overseeing imperial physicians in the residence to give me a check-up.

“The imperial physicians said that my body is very healthy.

“Lao Furen was also present back then.

“For the same reason, I genuinely doubt whether I’ve been afflicted with infertility medicine.”

With due haste, Ruan Xi verbalised her actual condition, and she did not try to conceal anything.

As a matter of fact, it was an exercise in futility to try and hide it. Unless she did not have a child for her entire life, it would be exposed sooner or later. It was better to speak the truth for what it was; whether the others chose to believe it was their business.

Amidst the vicissitudes, Wen furen remained wordless for a long time before she asked for confirmation: “Xiao Xi, is what you said really true?”

Ruan Xu nodded her head lightly, “It’s true. Popo can find an imperial physician to give me another check-up.”

When Wen furen saw Ruan Xi’s frank appearance, her taut nerves relaxed, because she already believed her words at the bottom of her heart. Since Lao Furen was already aware, then it must mean that Ruan Xi had escaped unscathed.

Consequently, Lao Furen would not be agitated by this rumour.

The servants in the room collectively sighed in relief, apart from the maidservant who had her head lowered. The witness and evidence was already accounted for, how could Shao Furen have possibly escaped it?

“Furen, what should be done about the rumours circulating outside?” Wen furen‘s trusted Mama spoke out suddenly.

“The rumour needs to be denied of course. However, before the rumour is refuted, an imperial physician should be invited to check over Xiao Xi once, to increase the persuasiveness.” Wen furen said with a lower voice.

“Popo speaks correctly.” Ruan Xi voiced her agreement.

“This matter cannot be delayed, Mama Zhao, take my card and go and invite an imperial physician.”

“Yes, Furen.” Mama Zhao quickly complied and left.

Wen furen turned towards Ruan Xi, saying in a warm voice: “Xiao Xi, don’t return to Earl Chengyi Residence first.”

Ruan Xi had no opinions, she did not want to go back to Earl Chengyi Residence to offer condolences to Zhang shi either.

“I will listen to popo.”

Wen furen nodded in satisfaction.

At this juncture, there were a lot of people paying attention to the Wen Family’s movements, and since Wen furen did not deliberately conceal the news of her trusted Mama inviting an imperial physician, it was promulgated very quickly, and everyone wanted to know the results.

The undercurrents in Minister Wen Residence’s back courtyard surged.

After Liu Wan Wan heard that Ruan Xi had been afflicted with infertility medicine, she almost laughed out loud.

Truthfully speaking, she was extremely jealous of Ruan Xi in her heart; she was jealous of her good life and good luck.

But she was not jealous anymore.

A woman who could not bear children was not worth her jealousy.

In the afternoon, Wen furen contacted a few imperial physicians from the imperial hospital to invite them over to give Ruan Xi a check-up.

All of them gave the same conclusion.

Ruan Xi had not fallen for the scheme.

Wen furen was quite happy because of this, and she immediately dispatched her servants to release the information to refute the rumours, but it was unfortunate that there were only a scarce few that believed it.

Ruan san niang, who had just ruthlessly voiced her grudges, sneered when she heard about the Wen Family refuting the rumours.

“What is real can’t be faked, and what is fake can’t become real; perhaps si mei might put on a show where she becomes pregnant only to miscarry in the future.”

Yao Hong and Yao Zi: “……”

Ruan san niang said those words in front of a crowd, so her words were disseminated very quickly.

As a matter of fact, Ruan san niang had done that on purpose, she wanted to cut off her fourth sister’s route of retreat completely.

Once she thought about how her fourth sister would have a desolate night scenery in this lifetime instead of having a happy and blissful life with her descendants filling the halls to brim like she did in her last, even going to the extent where she might not even have an night scenery because she would become depressed and meet her end early, Ruan san niang felt endlessly excited at the prospect of her fourth sister’s future misery.

As for why she did not specifically target Mu Qing Ci, the person who had become the Empress Dowager, well, who told the Fourth Prince to have other women in his back courtyard?

Mu Qing Ci was just a mother who relied on her son to become noble; she merely skipped past the Empress and sat on the Empress Dowager position in the end.

It goes without saying that the political opponents of the Wen Family seized this chance to viciously step on the Wen Family once, and with these troops mixing into the water, the majority of people ended up believing that Ruan Xi had actually been administered the infertility medicine.

Wen furen was incomparably irate after she learned of this fact, and she could not help but comfort Ruan Xi.

Contrary to popular expectations, Ruan Xi did not mind.

“Popo, those mouths grow on their bodies, and we can’t possibly block the mouths of the mass public. As long as popo and gonggong trusts me, that will be enough.”

Wen furen frowned, “Wouldn’t that be a disservice to you?”

Ruan Xi chuckled, “Popo, it’s not like I’m actually afflicted by the infertility medicine, why would I feel wronged?”

Seeing that Ruan Xi honestly did not mind, Wen furen finally set her heart at ease.

“Fortunately, that main chef still had some conscience, and he did not spike all the dishes you were eating. However, you have your own luck too, such that you had the inexorable and mysterious protection of the deities who allowed you to evade the drugged dishes.”

Wen furen recalled what she had personally investigated, and she could not help but sigh at her daughter-in-law’s good fortune.

Mama Zhao was the same.

Ruan Xi pretended to smile in embarrassment. Honestly speaking, Wen furen was correct. Her golden finger was bestowed by the heavens, and it could certainly be said that the deities were protecting her.

Since Wen lao-furen, Minister Wen, Wen furen, and Wen Ting Zhou still treated Ruan Xi with the same graciousness, the servants in the Minister Wen Residence noted it down, and they continued to maintain fitting and deferential attitudes towards Ruan Xi.

The myriad of disturbances outside did not affect Ruan Xi’s position within the Wen Family in the slightest.

Liu Wan Wan, who was fully experiencing Zhao yiniang’s grinding and burnishing, was short of dying in anger.

Ever since Ruan san niang brought Zhang shi’s scandals to the court without restraint, Earl Chengyi Residence had become the focal point of the public instantaneously.

Lao Taitai and Earl Chengyi nearly vomited their blood out in anger.

And Ruan Yu Wen, being the legitimate eldest son borne by Zhang shi, was being pointed at and criticised in the dark.

To say nothing of Zhang shi’s maternal family.

All of them hated Ruan san niang to death for making their family scandals public without any scruples.

Since the commotion became too loud, and despite being in the Fourth Prince’s back courtyard, Mu Qing Ci also heard about how her fellow transmigrator had unexpectedly sued the recently deceased Earl Chengyi Furen who was her biological mother in name, and it made her feel uncomfortable all over.

Had Ruan san niang’s brain been gnawed by dogs?

With how much she was squandering, why wasn’t the Emperor reacting in the slightest?

Was it possible that he was really intending to bring Ruan san niang into his imperial harem?

Mu Qing Ci shivered. This fellow transmigrator was absolutely terrifying, and her transmigrator halo was too dazzling.

Mei Hua looked at her dispirited Young Lady, feeling a little perplexed. Her Young Lady couldn’t possibly be worrying about that insane Ruan san xiaojie, right?

“Mei Hua, I’m very happy about the fact that I entered the Fourth Prince’s back courtyard and managed to stay far away from Ruan san xiaojie.” Mu Qing Ci said in a rejoicing tone after she exhaled from her mouth softly.

Once Mei Hua heard her Young Lady utter those words, she immediately set her heart at ease.

“Ruan si xiaojie is truly pitiful, she was actually administered infertility medicine by her legitimate mother, one hopes that the Wen Family won’t abandon her.”

Mu Qing Ci was quite fond of Wen gongzi and Ruan si xiaojie as a pair of lovers.

But the ancient people attached a great deal of importance to their descendants, and the fact that Ruan si xiaojie was afflicted by infertility medicine had been exposed. She feared that she would not be having good days in the future, and she might even be divorced and abandoned by the Wen Family.

“Young Lady, it’s unknown if this matter is real or fake. It’s highly possible that Ruan san xiaojie is deliberately trying to ruin Ruan si xiaojie’s reputation, which is why she created the rumour about the infertility medicine. Didn’t the Minister Wen Residence ask the imperial physicians to refute these rumours?” Mei Hua’s impression of Ruan san niang could not be more terrible, and she felt like it was highly possible that she was creating something from nothing.

“Mei Hua, you’re being too naive. The witness testimony and material evidence are all in place, Ruan si xiaojie definitely fell for it.” Mu Qing Ci gave Mei Hua a dark look. She also wished that it was a false rumour, alright?

Mei Hua: “……”

Putting aside the female protagonist Mu Qing Ci’s conversation with her servant, everyone was paying attention to the developments of the case together without any prior agreement.

Ruan san niang sued her deceased biological mother, publicising the evil and poisonous deed that Zhang shi had done, which made the gossip go from bad to worse.

What was more shocking was that the Shuntian Government Office had accepted this legal case, with rumours stating that the evidence was all in place, and the two trusted Mamas of the recently deceased Earl Chengyi Furen had already admitted to their crimes.

A few days later, the curtains finally fell on the case that everyone was paying attention to. The crimes that Ruan san niang sued Zhang shi for were all judged as objective facts, which made everyone shocked. Hence, the common people in the entire capital were discussing this case.

Injuring Earl Chengyi’s descendants, dispatching people to assassinate her own biological daughter, murdering her illegitimate daughter’s Mama, drugging and harming her illegitimate daughter, Zhang shi’s reputation became completely rotten shortly after her death. Ruan san niang’s reputation was the same, even though she was also a victim.

However, filial piety was bigger than the skies, and Ruan san niang’s behaviour was disgraceful.

大逆不道 (pinyin: da ni bu dao) – disgraceful (of behaviour that is unfilial, rebellious or otherwise in grave breach of the norms of society).

Apart from this, the autopsy of Zhang shi’s corpse was also released. The coroner judged that she had died suddenly because of a cerebral haemorrhage, and the possibility of homicide did not exist.

Had that not been the case, Ruan san niang’s act of suing her biological mother bore a high possibility of her having to shoulder the burden of being accused of intentionally murdering her biological mother.

The person that the public sympathised with and pitied the most was Ruan si xiaojie. She had just gotten married half a month ago, and yet such a thing was exposed. The latter half of her life was now ruined.

With the Wen Family’s political opponents pushing the waves and adding to billows, no one believed what the imperial physicians said to deny those rumours.

Some sympathised, but there were naturally people who were gloating at her misfortune.

Li Xiang Xiang, who was going to marry the Fourth Prince soon, could not help but blossom with happiness, and Mu Qing Ling, who had her engagement to Wen Ting Yi broken off, continued to watch how much of a joke Ruan Xi was.

Wen Ting Zhou had also been receiving sympathetic and pity-filled gazes from his colleagues for the past two days in the Hanlin Academy.

Wen Ting Zhou was calm and composed in the face of it all.

He did not expect that Ruan san niang would move so quickly, and she would choose such an extreme method that resulted in losses for both sides. But this was good too; Zhang shi’s evil deeds have been exposed, his Father-in-law Earl Chengyi had already announced that Zhang shi had been removed from the clan ancestry, and he had simultaneously dispatched his men to move Zhang shi’s corpse back to the Zhang Family.

And now, Ruan Ruan did not have to observe a period of mourning for Zhang shi.

For Wen Ting Zhou, this conclusion was still satisfactory. With quick and light steps, he departed from Hanlin Academy to return to his residence.

The time was the beginning of the sixth month, the sun was shining fiercely, and the heatwave was tumbling.

Ice basins were placed in the main room of Harmonious Dwelling, which made the room refreshing and cool. Ruan Xi sat on the summer bamboo mat that was spread across the couch as she read the ledgers.

The high yielding crops that they obtained from Zhang Liang had been growing at a decent rate, but after this batch of yam, potato, and maize was harvested, they would be kept as a seed stock.

Presently, Su Yu and Su Zhu admired their Young Lady’s vision greatly. Everyone clearly felt that the things Zhang Liang wrote in his travel journals were exaggerations, but their Young Lady managed to dig out these good things.

At this moment, Mama Yang carried in a bowl of iced pickled plum soup.

“Shao Furen, drink some iced pickled plum soup to disperse the summer heat. “

Ruan Xi nodded and put down the ledger in her hands, picking up the iced pickled plum soup to drink it.

It was incredibly refreshing to drink a bowl of iced pickled plum soup, except it was not advisable to drink too much of such icy beverages.

After drinking her iced pickled plum soup, Ruan Xi did not continue reading the ledger. Instead, she sat on the cooling mat in the daze.

Su Yu and the rest watched over her quietly.

Two days ago, Ruan Xi had returned to Earl Chengyi Residence to visit her Earl Father and Lao Taitai.

Neither of their complexions had been ideal, and they appeared rather haggard. It was only when they learned that Ruan Xi had, in fact, escaped the ploy unscathed, and everything was still well with the Wen Family, that their spirits were raised.

Lao Taitai even went as far as urging her to bear a child quickly to shatter those rumours.

Ruan Xi gave a ‘囧’ expression in response. It was not like she was capable of bearing a child just because she wanted to bear a child.

What made her sigh the most was the fact that Ruan Yu Wen had quit Qingshan Academy. With a mother like Zhang shi who had been removed from the Ruan Family’s clan registry, his position in the Earl Residence had become awkward, since he was neither legitimate nor illegitimate.

As for Ruan san niang, she remained infernally tempestuous and exceedingly rampant. There was hearsay that the imperial censors had submitted memorial after memorial criticising her, but Emperor Shengde’s attitude about bringing Ruan san niang into his imperial harem remained unchanged.

Ruan Xi did not find it strange.

Ruan san niang possessed a number of good things that were beneficial to the country and the common people in her hands. Perhaps it was like a broken pot being toppled over and shattered; upon seeing that the old Emperor was keeping one eye open while keeping the other eye closed, her actions became increasingly unbridled.

Once Wen Ting Zhou stepped in, he discovered Ruan Xi trapped in a daze. His lip corners raised slightly as he waved his hand to dismiss the maidservants and Mama from the room. Subsequently, he strode over to Ruan Xi’s side and sat down, extending his arm to pull Ruan Xi into his embrace.

“Ruan Ruan, what are you thinking about?”

Before Ruan Xi could reply, Su Yu’s voice suddenly rang out from outside.

“Gu ye, Young Lady, the Third Young Lady asks for an audience.”
