When Su Yu, Su Zhu, and the other maidservants saw Wen Ting Zhou walking out, their complexions paled slightly. They did not know how much he had heard, and if this would cause a gap between him and their Young Lady.

Ruan Xi gave Wen Ting Zhou a wide grin, “You should have heard it, I didn’t reject san jie.”

Wen Tong Zhou strode over to Ruan Xi and sat beside her, accepting the tea that Ruan Xi was offering in a natural manner before he took a sip. He smiled leisurely as he stated: “The secret braised duck recipe is yours, Ruan Ruan can do whatever she wants with it.”

In short, everything was dependent on Ruan Ruan’s intention.

Once Wen Ting Zhou uttered those words, Su Yu and Su Zhu felt their minds relax.

Ruan Xi thinned her lips into a smile, casting sidelong glances at Wen Ting Zhou and her maidservants before she offered a brief explanation: “There’s no need for any of you to worry. It’s impossible for me and san jie to perish our debts of gratitude and held grudges with a smile, nor did I take san jie’s words to heart. However, for the sake of stabilising her, I will be standing on her boat for the time being.”

Wen Ting Zhou’s facial features were lined with mirth, “Mn, I trust Ruan Ruan.”

Hence, Ruan san niang’s visit passed by just like that, as light as a feather.

The next day, Ruan san niang was brought into the palace by the  servants the Emperor dispatched, and she became the topic for conversation during tea and after meals for the common people within the capital again.

……

The days passed like flowing water, and in a blink of an eye, Ruan san niang had entered the imperial palace for the better part of the month.

Ruan Xi had also married into the Wen Family for more than a month. The rumours concerning her inability to bear children gradually disappeared, and Earl Chengyi Residence regained its calm as well.

The weather for the last third of the sixth month was blistering hot, and ever since the day that Ruan san niang entered the imperial palace, there hadn’t been a single drop of rain, so the air was humid and dry.

Apart from going to the main courtyard to wait upon her mother-in-law Wen furen, Ruan Xi spent most of her time lazing in the room, not wanting to move at all.

Recently, her mother-in-law had been dispatching servants to send nourishing medicine every day like medicinal soups that could nourish the body, or medicinal cuisine that could promote pregnancy…

Even Wen Ting Zhou could not escape the fate of having to drink those nourishing soups, since a huge bowl of deer blood and deer antler soup was waiting for him every night.

Ruan Xi would be tossed and turned every night until her waist was sore and her back was aching, and it was both mentally and physically exhausting.

Ever since Liu Wan Wan had announced her pregnancy a few days ago, Zhao yiniang would always flaunt it whenever she was paying her respects, and even Wen furen, who was typically composed, could no longer suppress her own anxiety.

Whenever Ruan Xi went over to serve her mother-in-law Wen furen in the past few days, Wen furen’s gaze would involuntarily, and frequently, land on her abdomen in scrutiny, which made Ruan Xi feel very helpless.

A child was not something she could have just because she wanted it, it was dependent on affinity and luck.

“Shao Furen, Ruan fei niangniang has sent a letter.” Su Zhu gave Ruan Xi a letter after she stepped into the room.

Ruan Xi looked at Su Yu lazily, “Bring it over and let me have a look.”

Ruan san niang had entered the palace for a bigger part of the month, and the imperial palace had been dead calm the whole time. Ruan Xi initially assumed that she was being imprisoned by the old Emperor, and she hadn’t anticipated that she could actually send letters outside of the palace.

Su Yu handed over the letter, to which Ruan Xi tore open, and then black lines started dripping down her head immediately once she read it.

Apart from reminding her about the secret braised duck recipe sporadically, Ruan san niang flaunted the fact that she was living extremely well in the back palace.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Just as Ruan Xi kept the letter, Mama Zhao, of whom Wen furen trusted, brought in a food box with a face full of smiles.

“Shao Furen, this is the nourishing soup for today.”

Ruan Xi watched as Mama Zhao took out a bowl of nutritious soup and placed it in front of her, the edges of her lips twitching. Toughening her scalp, she raised the nourishing soup and drank it all, before putting the empty bowl on the table.

“Mama Zhao, I’ve drank it all.”

Satisfied, Mama Zhao kept the empty bowl and left.

“When will these days end.” Ruan Xi was going to die from worry. If she continued being nourished like this, she was afraid that she was going to be over-nourished and thus suffer from excessive internal heat.

Su Yu picked up a circular fan and started fanning the wind towards her Young Lady at a gentle and slow pace.

“It is highly probable that yõu can stop drinking it once yõu are pregnant with a child.”

Ruan Xi’s following expression conveyed that she had nothing to live for.

After they had their dinner in the main courtyard that night, Wen furen smiled as she allowed Mama Zhao to take out the large bowl of soup that she had prepared.

“It’s getting late, both of you should return to your courtyard earlier to rest.”

Ruan Xi: “……”

It was here again.

Fortunately, she did not make Wen Ting Zhou drink all of the soup contents in front of her this time around. Ruan Xi heaved a sigh of relief secretly in her heart.

When Wen Ting Zhou caught a glimpse of the small fraction of relief that Ruan Ruan rarely displayed, he secretly found it amusing. He smiled and nodded towards his mother before he calmly accepted the nourishing soup that his mother was offering, then he pulled Ruan Xi away to leave the main courtyard.

Once they returned to Harmonious Dwelling, Wen Ting Zhou shoved the nourishing soup into Zhang Qing’s hands without changing his expression in the slightest.

“Zhang Qing, this nourishing soup has been rewarded to you.”

“Thanking Shaoye for the reward.”

Zhang Qing took the food box with a bitter expression. What was an unmarried man like him drinking this kind of nourishing soup for?

Ruan Xi snickered internally.

Wen Ting Zhou looked at Ruan Xi in amusement. Cough cough, it seems like he had been too lustful for the past few nights, and Ruan Ruan could not bear it.

He should let Ruan Ruan have a proper rest tonight.

At this moment, Mama Yang, who had always been weak in terms of her sense of existence, suddenly spoke out: “Shao Furen, your period for this month has already been delayed by four days.”

Ruan Xi stilled. The original owner could be classified as a person who developed early since she started having her period at thirteen. In the years since, her monthly period had always been punctual, and yet it did not arrive on time this month. If it were not for Mama Yang’s reminder, she would have forgotten this detail. Faintly, Ruan Xi had a conjecture, which gave rise to a thread of undefined joy and prediction in her heart.

Su Yu, Su Zhu, and Zhang Qing looked visibly surprised.

A sudden glint flashed through Wen Ting Zhou’s eyes at the pleasant surprise, and his gaze naturally fell on Ruan Xi’s flat abdomen.

“Ruan Ruan, is what Mama Yang said true?”

Ruan Xi nodded, “Mn. Certainly, it has been delayed by four days.”

Just as she finished her words, she landed in a warm and gentle embrace as a larger hand stroked her stomach, with Wen Ting Zhou’s excitement-tinged voice sounding next to her.

“Ruan Ruan, it is my rest day tomorrow, and it just so happens that I can bring you out to let someone check your pulse, and perhaps you really are pregnant.”

Su Yu, Su Zhu, and Zhang Qing widened their eyes abruptly.

Shao Furen might be pregnant?

Ruan Xi was also genuinely afraid that they might be happy for nothing, so she quickly said: “Mn, we should refrain from disclosing it first, but we can speak of it again once it has been confirmed.”

If she was truly pregnant, then she could escape the life of having to drink the nourishing soups.

Mama Yang smiled, before looking pointedly at Su Yu, Su Zhu, and Zhang Qing. Subsequently, the three of them withdrew in a sensible manner.

Wen Ting Zhou wrapped his arm around Ruan Xi’s waist gently and returned back to their room. His countenance was coloured with delight, and he inclined his head to give Ruan Xi a lingering kiss.

“Ruan Ruan, we should rest earlier.”

Ruan Xi smiled and nodded.

After the pair took a bath and changed their clothes, they embraced each other on the bed. As Ruan Xi laid in Wen Ting Zhou’s arms, she fell asleep very quickly, but because of the conjecture that Ruan Xi might be pregnant, Wen Ting Zhou barely caught a wink of sleep, while Ruan Xi slept very soundly.

The morning of the next day, after Wen Ting Zhou and Ruan Xi had breakfast with Wen furen, he proceeded to bring Ruan Xi out of the residence to go to the quiet and small compound located on an alley.

There was already an old physician waiting inside that small compound.

They did not ask a resident physician in the residence to take her pulse, mostly because they did not intend on disclosing it.

After the old physician carefully took Ruan Xi’s pulse, he quickly smiled and congratulated them: “Congratulations Wen daren, congratulations Shao Furen, you have been pregnant for a month.”

Joy spread across Ruan Xi’s face, and her hands reached for her lower abdomen subconsciously.

She was really pregnant.

Alongside the joy, there was also the embarrassment and complete loss at what she should do as a first-time mother, but when she saw Wen Ting Zhou’s excited and exuberant appearance, a hint of sweetness emerged in her heart.

The old physician opened a prescription for calming the foetus before he left quietly.

After the pair returned to the residence, they informed Wen furen of the good news, and it goes without saying that Wen furen was exceedingly happy.

Her daughter-in-law had her fortune; it has barely been more than a month since she married through the door, and she was already pregnant.

“Xiao Xi, don’t circulate the news of your pregnancy for the time being. Wait for the first three months to pass, and for the foetus to be considerably stabilised before you let the others know about it. However, Lao Furen should still be informed of the joyous occasion on her end first.”

Wen furen smiled as she instructed.

She was not Zhao yiniang, who could not wait to announce Liu Wan Wan’s pregnancy once she had conceived.

Ruan Xi responded with a smile, “I will listen to popo for everything.”
