After Ruan Xi woke up from her afternoon nap, she promptly heard about the rumours from her servant’s mouth. Ruan Xi narrowed her eyes slightly. She did not believe that her Earl Father would get involved with Mu Qing Ling just as he was preparing to raise Lin yiniang into legitimacy, it was quite apparent that her Earl Father had been schemed against.

Mu Qing Ling was a girl in the prime of her youth, and at the peak of her most glorious years. Even if she had her engagement broken off, she still had the Mu Family and Mu taifei, which meant that choosing a husband of equal economic and social status would be very easy to accomplish, so why was she targeting her Earl Father?

Was this Mu Qing Ling’s revenge, or was the Mu Family conspiring something?

Ruan Xi frowned.

According to Su Yu’s words, the rumours of her Earl Father ruining Mu Qing Ling’s innocence were circulating outside. For a man, it was just another brushstroke that people discussed enthusiastically, a moral obligation formed in consequence of a love affair.

Since Mu Qing Ling’s innocence had been ruined, she feared that she would have to marry her Earl Father.

Once she thought about Mu Qing Ling – a person who loathed her – being her legitimate mother, Ruan Xi scowled. This could never come to pass.

But Mu Qing Ling’s innocence had been ruined…

Ruan Xi felt her head hurting terribly.

This issue was hard to resolve.

“Shao Furen, how do yõu think that Mu san xiaojie managed to involve herself with the Earl?”

Su Yu was looking wholly distracted. She had not forgotten how that san xiaojie from the Mu Family’s main branch had made irresponsible remarks during Wen lao-furen’s banquet in attempt to splash dirty water on her Young Lady.

That’s right, Mu Qing Ling was the Mu Family’s third young lady. Ruan Xi honestly felt like she had a serious conflict with the number three.

“I want to know how Mu Qing Ling, a young lady in her boudoir, managed to have her innocence ruined by Father as well. Mama Yang, make a trip to the Earl Residence and ask Lao Taitai what is going on.” Ruan Xi pursed her lips. Her Earl Father was obsessed with climbing the ranks, and even if he were to find a stage and put on a comedy outside, he should never have stumbled into Mu Qing Ling. It was obvious that there was something fishy going on.

It was at this moment where Wen furen came over with Mama Chen, and she immediately strode up to the bed couch once she entered the room.

“There’s no longer a need to go, I’m aware of the proceedings in your father’s case. Marquis Huaiyang was celebrating his major birthday today, and your father had been invited. Someone drugged your father’s wine, but Qi er gongzi (Qi Yue An) appeared in a timely fashion, and it’s fortunate that nothing truly happened between them. However, everyone did witness the fact that the clothes of your father and the Mu Family’s san xiaojie were disorderly.”

From what Wen furen allegedly knew, if it were not for Marquis Huaiyang’s concubine-born second son, she was afraid that her daughter-in-law’s father would have had a happy event with Mu Qing Ling.

After learning that her Earl Father had been schemed against, Ruan Xi sighed in relief.

“Since their clothes were merely in disarray, why didn’t the Mu Family suppress this matter, and allowed the rumours to fill the skies instead? It couldn’t possibly be that Assistant Minister Mu is planning to marry his daughter into the Earl Chengyi Residence, right?”

Wen furen shook her head, patting Ruan Xi’s hand as her gaze landed on her abdomen.

“Xiao Xi, you don’t need to worry about your father’s matters. Regardless of any deviations, she would just be married back. With your paternal grandmother around, she won’t be able to cause any large waves, you can care for your baby peacefully.”

Typically, the Mu Family’s young ladies would either be married to the imperial family, royal clan or aristocratic and distinguished families once they were of a suitable age for the sake of currying favour with said parties.

It was evident that Earl Chengyi fit none of those criteria.

Wen furen felt that this was not Assistant Minister Mu’s handwriting, and it was highly likely that it was Mu san xiaojie who was acting on her own accord, but Wen furen would never verbalise that thought since it would only serve to vex her daughter-in-law.

Ruan Xi realised it was true after hearing her words. Even if Mu Qing Ling really married her father, and wanted to display the pretensions of an elder, there was still Lao Taitai above her.

“Popo speaks correctly.”

Noting that Ruan Xi’s mood had turned for the better, Wen furen sighed in relief albeit imperceptibly. After giving a few instructions, she left the Harmonious Dwelling.

As it approached the evening, the rumours outside continued to intensify, to the extent where it gave rise to several versions, but all those rumours did not mention the fact that Earl Chengyi’s wine had issues, probably because it was being suppressed by someone to make it look like a love affair.

Ruan Xi took a calm stroll around the courtyard before she went back to her room to drink some tea and read, waiting for Wen Ting Zhou to return to have dinner together.

When Wen Ting Zhou was greeted with the scene upon his return, his lips hooked up slightly. It seems like his father-in-law’s problem did not impact Ruan Ruan’s mood.

After dinner, the moon was cool like water, suspended in the sky.

The pair were sitting on the rattan chair in the courtyard to enjoy the cool air when Wen Ting Zhou cleared his throat.

“Ruan Ruan, the matter of Yuefu being plotted against actually involves the back palace.”

“What?”

When Ruan Xi heard Wen Ting Zhou say that the matter involved the back palace, she revealed a surprised expression, and her first thought was that it was Mu taifei’s doing.

“Was it Mu taifei?”

Wen Ting Zhou’s handsome face hardened with strictness.

“It wasn’t Mu taifei, the orchestrator behind the scenes is your san jie. She and Mu Qing Ling colluded to scheme against Yuefu, the imperial censors are accusing Yuefu for not exercising restraint and how his actions are harmful to the prestige of the court, and memorials about dismissing him from office in order to deter subsequent bad examples have already been placed on the imperial desk.”

At the side, Su Yu and Su Zhu were fanning them with circular fans, and they sucked in a mouthful of cold air upon hearing that. What was the Third Young Lady trying to do, such that she was colluding with other people to scheme against the Earl?

Mama Yang remained composed. Ever since that Third Young Lady sued her own biological mother, it was evident that her heart was no longer with the Earl Residence and being able to scheme against her father was not a cause for surprise.

Ruan Xi’s complexion changed slightly, “It’s actually her.”

She once contemplated the various options, but the only possibility she hadn’t conceived was Ruan san niang sticking her hand in.

“What is she trying to do exactly?”

“Ruan Ruan, she was targeting you; she wants to use Mu Qing Ling to suppress your head.” A smear of cold intent flickered past the bottom of Wen Ting Zhou’s eyes.

Su Yu and Su Zhu became enraged.

The Third Young Lady was really going too far.

Ruan Xia arched an eyebrow. Ruan san niang was the old Emperor’s imperial concubine, and even if Mu Qing Ling were to marry into Earl Chengyi Residence, she could not suppress Ruan san niang, but she was different.

Ruan Xi was short of barking out an angry laugh at Ruan san niang’s bizarre actions.

“Is the Emperor aware?”

Wen Ting Zhou nodded, his mouth thinning, “Her small movements can’t conceal past the Emperor, and the imperial censors throwing accusations at Yuefu have been summoned into the imperial palace and berated by the Emperor.”

Towards these imperial censors who did not watch attentively for abusive and corrupt officials, who did not care about the major affairs of the court, and only cared to stare at the back courtyards of the court officials, Wen Ting Zhou did not have the slightest good feeling for them.

“I will dispatch someone to investigate this matter thoroughly.”

The accounts with the Mu Family would be settled sooner or later, and Wen Ting Zhou did not wish for Ruan Ruan’s maternal home to get caught up in it.

More importantly, after Mu Qing Ling had her engagement with Wen Ting Yi broken off, she, who had always been arrogant and rather pampered, could not accept this drop in elevation, and she had a deeply-seated hatred for Ruan Ruan.

Once Mu Qing Ling became his father-in-law’s new furen, who knew what kind of moths she would stir.

It was better to settle this problem altogether.

Earl Chengyi was incredibly enraged by the fact he had been schemed against. Regardless of how intense the rumours and gossip outside were, he had no intention of proposing to marry Mu Qing Ling.

Assistant Minister Mu did not want a son-in-law who was the same age as him either, and between the pair in question, nothing had occurred, their clothes were just a little messy.

A few days went by, and that was how the matter continued dragging on.

The others were not anxious, but Mu Qing Ling was anxious. The reason why she agreed to collude with Ruan san niang was not only because she wanted to suppress Ruan Xi; rather, she was plagued with a secret trouble and she had no choice but to do this.

However, that hateful Qi er gongzi appeared and spoiled her good matters.

Mu Qing Ling bit her lip, a glint of fierce determination flashing past her eyes.

On the second day her resolution was formed, she evaded the servants that were watching over her and sneaked out of the residence, going to the Ministry of Work directly to block him, vehemently forcing him to marry her in front of everyone, which attracted the spectatorship of everyone.

The problem was then blown out of proportion.

Earl Chengyi nearly spat out blood in anger. He ignored that Mu Family’s san xiaojie as she threatened suicide to force him to marry her, directly flinging his sleeves and leaving.

The abandoned Mu Qing Ling lost her face completely, and she was brought back by the Mu Family after they received the news.

The two became a hot topic within the capital again.

Gently, Ruan Xi caressed her slightly protruding lower abdomen, looking pensive. There was something terribly wrong with Mu Qing Ling in her trying to force the marriage. There was definitely a secret that was not known by outsiders.

This secret was uncovered by Wen Ting Zhou that night.

It turns out that when Mu Qing Ling went to a farmstead to while her cares away two months ago, she had a chance encounter with an elegant and smart gongzi. After the pair immersed themselves in the river of love and had a skin-to-skin relationship, that gongzi promptly disappeared. Mu Qing Ling’s search for him in the dark had been fruitless, and then people from the Mu Family came over to take her back. Mu Qing Ling could only return to the Mu Family, except Mu Qing Ling later discovered that she had become pregnant from the secret love affair, but she could not bear to abort her lover’s child, and she had even less gall to allow Assistant Minister Mu and the others know about this. It just happened that Ruan san niang coincidentally dispatched someone to look for her, and she proceeded to collude with Ruan san niang to scheme against Earl Chengyi.

Ruan Xi became stunned right then and there. This was the progression of wanting to make her Earl Father wear a green hat.

“Therefore, did san jie know that Mu Qing Ling was pregnant?”

Wen Ting Zhou shook his head, “She doesn’t, Mu Qing Ling hid it from her.”

He did not expect that he would find such a hidden plot either.

This Ruan san niang was truly amazing in terms of her ability to dig pits.

“Give the results you found to Father; I trust that Father will deal with it appropriately.”

Since Mu Qing Ling was nothing to worry about, Ruan Xi did not plan on meddling.

Wen Ting Zhou smiled and nodded.

“Alright.”

“It has been hard on Husband daren.”

Smiling, Ruan Xi stretched her hands out to wrap around his neck, pulling him down slightly to kiss his handsome face.

Wen Ting Zhou arched an eyebrow. He extended his arms to pull her into his embrace, his pitch-black and deep eyes locking on her pretty countenance.

“Just the face?”

Ruan Xi had a face of innocence as she met his gaze, “Yes, just the face.”

Wen Ting Zhou issued a low chuckle.

“Since that’s the case, this husband can only seek for more on his own.”

Just as his words landed, Wen Ting Zhou inclined his body and kissed Ruan Xi’s lips, releasing his inexhaustible enthusiasm.

It was only after a long while that the urgent gasps for breaths in the room gradually levelled.

“Let’s go to bed.”

Wen Ting Zhou peered at the still-present blush on Ruan Xi’s visage before he carried her onto the bed.

The next day, the skies were only slightly bright when Ruan Xi woke up. She was planning to go to the main courtyard to pay her respects this morning. Since her baby was stable, she was unwilling to be a cause for gossip. During the two months where she did not go to the main courtyard to pay her respects, a lot of rumours and gossip had generated below, and they had disappeared after Wen furen reprimanded them severely.

It was only after she announced her three-month pregnancy that everyone arrived at a sudden epiphany.

“Awake?”

Wen Ting Zhou’s low and hoarse reverberated from behind her, and the arms wrapping around her body simultaneously tightened to bring her into his embrace.

“Mn, I’m going to pay my respects this morning.”

“It’s still early, sleep for a while more. Mother won’t mind.” Wen Ting Zhou tucked his chin in the crook of her neck, his large hands stroking her slightly protruding lower abdomen.

“I can’t sleep anymore.”

Wen Ting Zhou did not force her. Instead, he relaxed his grip to allow Ruan Xi to sit up before he got off the bed to change his clothes.

Su Yu and Su Zhu had already prepared the tools for their morning routine. After the pair were done rinsing their mouths, Ruan Xi sat on the chair as Wen Ting Zhou rolled up his sleeves, taking Ruan Xi’s cloth and placing it in the water basin. Then, he wrung it dry and helped Ruan Xi wipe her face.

His actions were very gentle, and his gaze was very focused.

Ruan Xi’s face, ears, and neck were carefully wiped by Wen Ting Zhou once, then he made the cloth wet again by dipping it into the water basin and wringing out the water, before he wiped it again.

Ruan Xi felt embarrassed in the beginning, but she gradually became accustomed to it. Perhaps it was because of this act of tenderness, that she constantly maintained a good state of mind throughout her pregnancy thus far.
