Truthfully speaking, Ruan Xi did not comprehend Ruan san niang’s mentality. Ruan san niang had transmigrated and was later reborn, had a sense of superiority that was not in touch with reality, believed herself to be the protagonist, and felt like she should be surrounded by outstanding and infatuated men like any female protagonist, all ripe for her picking.

However—

Her imagination was rich, but reality was just bare bones.

In her previous lifetime, she had been dragged down by the old Emperor to accompany him in burial, and she wanted to change her fate in this lifetime, but she had squandered and tossed herself back to the original point in the end.

Ruan san niang appeared unbridled, reckless, and rather prosperous with the favour she received, but the truth of the matter was that no one knew just how much dread and loathing she felt towards the old Emperor in her heart.

She was not jealous of Mu Qing Ci who eventually became the Empress Dowager, because she was merely the woman who was more favoured by the Fourth Prince in a crowd of women.

But Ruan Xi was different.

Whether it was her past lifetime or this life, she attained everything she yearned for in her dreams.

What made Ruan san niang collapse even more with jealousy was that Wen Ting Zhou was not a cutsleeve, and she had facilitated Ruan Xi’s divine marriage affinity with her own hands.

Ruan san niang found it difficult to accept this terrible impact. She was clearly supposed to be the female protagonist, but under Ruan Xi’s brilliance, she lived like a cannon fodder.

Ruan san niang was not reconciled, she hated, and she abhorred the Heavens for its unfairness.

The negative emotions that had accumulated over two lifetimes detonated, gushing out like a turbulent tide. Ruan san niang felt like her chest was being pressured by a tremendously large weight, and under the circumstances where her emotions were undulating and exceedingly unsteady, she was forced to spit out a mouthful of blood.

When Ruan san niang suddenly spat out blood, the room plunged into dead silence.

Yao Hong and Yao Si were frightened to the point where their faces were the colour of dirt, and they hastily supported Ruan san niang who was on the brink of collapse as they shouted in panic:

“Niangniang!”

“I’m fine.” It was apparent that Ruan san niang did not expect that her fourth sister’s pregnancy would suddenly agitate her until she spat out blood and make a fool out of herself in front of everyone. She felt that the gazes that her fourth sister and Wen Ting Zhou were regarding her with were filled with ridicule and sneers.

Ruan san niang only felt like a lump of anger was lodged in her throat, which made her expression warp into something sinister. She took a deep breath, retrieving her handkerchief to wipe the bloodstain at the corners of her mouth.

“There is no need for si mei to worry, my body has been unwell recently, and my emotions can’t be over-stimulated. It’s just that after confirming the veracity of si mei’s pregnancy, my bodily condition was forgotten in a moment of over-excitement, it must have frightened si mei.” Ruan san niang spouted senseless words with open eyes, forcing a reason for her blood spitting through.

The palace maids and Mamas inside the room were dumbstruck: “……”

The two female physicians: “……”

The edges of Ruan Xi’s lips twitched. As the shock on her face receded, she was secretly amused in her mind, since when did she care for her?

Ruan san niang was a little cockroach that could not be beaten to death, and her skin was thicker than the city walls.

Visible concern appeared in Ruan Xi’s eyes. “So that’s how it is. And here I was thinking that san jie had suffered a terrible upset because of my pregnancy, it seems like I was thinking too much. San jie should take care of her body more, avoid feeling great joys or outrages, and follow the physician’s advice to ensure a quick recovery and bear a dragon seed early.”

As Wen Ting Zhou guarded Ruan Xi from her side, a small speck of mirth emerged in his eyes.

“Many thanks for si mei’s concern, I will do so!” Ruan san niang choked, squeezing out the last four words through gritted teeth.

Supporting her bulging lower abdomen, Ruan Xi abruptly displayed a smile. Her voice was neither fast nor slow, and was measured in volume, but it was impossible for people to ignore: “San jie, the memory of today’s affair has been engraved in my heart, I would like to peacefully nurture my baby in the residence in the future, and I cannot bear san jie’s ill-treatment. San jie is asked to refrain from summoning me into the palace again.”

This was the start of having an acrimonious falling out in front of everyone.

The two female physicians: “……”

They had seen a good drama today.

Ruan san niang’s complexion was exceedingly ugly; an intense vertigo struck her violently, and she nearly fainted.

“San jie, the veracity of my pregnancy has already been proven, and the Emperor is still waiting outside for the results. We should be going out with due haste, since we absolutely cannot allow the Emperor to wait for too long.”

After saying that, Ruan Xi shot a smile at Wen Ting Zhou. Wen Ting Zhou extended a hand to gently support her waist before walking out of the room.

Neither of them looked at Ruan san niang once.

After today, the rumours outside regarding Ruan Xi’s fake pregnancy were bound to disappear cleanly.

When Emperor Shengde saw Wen Ting Zhou and Ruan Xi – this pair of Golden Boy and Jade Maiden – come out, he smiled slightly, but after he saw Ruan san niang who was following in their footsteps, his gaze abruptly sank.

The two female physicians reported the results of their diagnosis to Emperor Shengde.

Emperor Shengde nodded lightly in response. Then, he smiled at the young married couple Wen Ting Zhou and Ruan Xi and congratulated them, and even gave Ruan Xi a huge pile of rewards.

Ruan Xi thanked him for his graciousness happily.

Although she had gone through a bit of torment no thanks to Ruan san niang, her gains were tremendous.

As Ruan san niang played witness to this scene, she gritted her teeth hard, and she vehemently suppressed all the anger, resentment, and hatred at the bottom of her heart.

At this juncture, no matter how stupid Ruan san niang was, she was still aware that her actions had unwittingly helped her fourth sister wash away all the suspicions about her possible fake pregnancy.

Ruan san niang nearly threw up blood in anger again.

And reality conformed to Ruan san niang’s prediction; each and every one of her movements were being observed, and by the time Wen Ting Zhou left the imperial palace, the news that Ruan Xi’s five-month pregnancy had been verified reached all ends of the capital.

This was personally done by the physicians that the Emperor called for, and rewards were generously bestowed, which signified that Wen shao-furen’s pregnancy was most definitely real.

From that point onwards, no one doubted Ruan Xi’s pregnancy.

And concurrently, Ruan san niang’s general conduct and behaviour during the affair was also exposed, and her already subpar reputation became even stinkier.

The people who adored and admired Wen Ting Zhou and believed in Ruan Xi’s fake pregnancy in hopes they could be the step up to the plate, laid down their flags and stilled the drums altogether.

Once the news reached Wen furen’s ears, Wen furen smiled and told Mama Zhao: “Xiao Xi is a fortunate one.”

Mama Zhao nodded in agreement, “She really is. Ruan fei niangniang was absolutely harbouring errant thoughts when she suddenly summoned Shao Furen into the palace in this instance, but she ended up losing the rice she was using as lure while she was trying to steal the chicken, and she even clarified the rumours of Shao Furen’s fake pregnancy.”

The rumour outside concerning Shao Furen’s fake pregnancy made her feel uncomfortable just from hearing it, to say nothing of her Furen and Lao Furen. But those mouths grew on the bodies of others, they could not control it; and in addition to Ruan fei niangniang’s indiscriminately-spoken words, the rumours went from bad to worse.

And now everything was fine; it was finally cleared up.

Mama Zhao only felt vindicated.

When Earl Chengyi Residence’s Lao Taotai heard this great news, she heaved a heavy sigh.

With the Emperor acting as a witness, who would still dare to randomly create rumours about si niang’s fake pregnancy?

It viciously slapped the people who were watching the Earl Chengyi Residence and gloating at their misfortune.

The only thing that still angered Lao Taitai was that wild ghost who was occupying her granddaughter’s body.

Prior to this, she had gone to a temple to ask a senior monk if he could expel that wild ghost, but the senior monk said that san niang’s life was fated to be calamitous, and there was no way to change it.

Lao Taitai could only endure, trapped in the genuine fear that she would ruin the Earl Residence, and watch with wide eyes as she ruined san niang’s reputation completely.

At the present moment, Ruan Xi and Wen Ting Zhou were sitting in the horse carriage. Wen Ting Zhou stretched out his arm and hooked, pulling his little wife into his embrace as he said in distress:

“Ruan Ruan, if you’re tired, close your eyes and rest for a while.”

Ruan Xi leaned into Wen Ting Zhou’s embrace and nodded lightly, “Mn.”

She was indeed tired; her legs were incomparably sore, and if it were not for Wen Ting Zhou entering the palace, she would have to walk a certain distance after leaving the Gentle Fortune Palace.

After Wen Ting Zhou arrived, he carried her and left Gentle Fortune Palace without hesitating in the slightest. While it was slightly embarrassing, Ruan Xi was warm all over in her heart, because the sensation of being cherished so tenderly felt really nice.

Ruan Xi settled in Wen Ting Zhou’s embrace with a peace of mind, closing her eyes to rest.

Wen Ting Zhou’s arms wrapped around her waist tightly. Gently, he pressed a light kiss on her hair, and confined her safely in his embrace.

As the horse carriage travelled forward slowly, Ruan Xi gradually fell asleep, thus issuing faint breathing noises. Upon seeing that, Wen Ting Zhou’s lips curled into a tender smile and he carefully adjusted his sitting posture to allow Ruan Xi to sleep more comfortably.

Su Yu and Mama Yang stayed at the side quietly.

When the horse carriage reached the Wen Residence, Ruan Xi was still sleeping deeply. Instead of waking her up, Wen Ting Zhou carried the sleeping Ruan Xi off the horse carriage in a gentle manner.

The extant trip into the palace had tired Ruan Ruan terribly: she could not sit in a horse carriage or sedan chair in the palace, and Ruan Ruan had to walk that long stretch of distance despite being five months pregnant. Just the thought of it alone made Wen Ting Zhou feel endlessly distressed.

Luckily, nothing happened to Ruan Ruan and their child, or else Wen Ting Zhou would be tempted to murder Ruan san niang.

When Wen furen saw her son carrying his wife back, shocked filled her heart, which prompted her to ask anxiously:

“Ting Zhou, what’s wrong with Xiao Xi?”

Wen Ting Zhou glanced down at his wife who was sleeping sweetly before he shook his head lightly. He replied in a small voice: “Ruan Ruan is more than fine, she’s just exhausted.”

Wen furen’s mind relaxed.

“It’s good that she’s fine, it’s good that she’s fine. Quickly carry Xiao Xi back to the courtyard to rest.”

Wen Ting Zhou nodded, then carried Ruan Xi back to the Harmonious Dwelling.

Su Yu and Mama Yang bent their knees towards Wen furen before they caught up with them with hasty steps.

Upon returning to their room, Wen Ting Zhou put Ruan Xi on the bed with gentle movements. He pulled over the blanket to cover her, tucked in the corners, and then lowered his head to kiss her face. Afterwards, he stood up again to go out and give Su Yu and the other maidservants several lines of instruction before he left for his study.

This time around, Ruan san niang had touched Wen Ting Zhou’s reverse scale; it goes without saying that Wen Ting Zhou would not be sparing her so easily.

In the eighth month, the new crops that were planted in various farmsteads in the earlier part of the year could be harvested. Their yield was exceedingly high, and the second rotation of the crops was going to have a bumper harvest soon. It was time to report it.

By the time Ruan Xi woke up, the skies outside had darkened, and the candles inside the room were already lit.

Wen Ting Zhou was sitting on the couch, flipping through a partially rolled book. Upon hearing the movement, he immediately put down the book in his hand and strode towards the front of the bed to support her by taking her soft, smooth, and supple hand into the hollow of his palm.

Wen Ting Zhou thumbed it gently as he asked: “Ruan Ruan, you’re awake, do you feel better now?”

When Ruan Xi woke up to the sight of Wen Ting Zhou watching over her in the room, her heart was teeming with a saturated warmth. At this moment, a wave of discomfort came from her stomach area, and she withdrew her hand to cover her empty stomach as she opened her mouth pitifully.

“Mn, I’m quite alright now, but I’m hungry.”

“I’ll ask the servants to bring in the meal.” Wen Ting Zhou immediately said. He stood up to go out and then he doubled back, with Su Yu and Su Zhu trailing after him.

After the pair of maidservants helped Ruan Xi freshen up, Wen Ting Zhou carried her to the outer room.

Zhang Qing was ordering the maidservants and Mamas to bring the dishes.

Ruan Xi sat on the chair, and she became even hungrier after smelling the rice and dishes.

“Drink some chicken soup first to warm your stomach.” Wen Ting Zhou looked visibly distressed as he personally ladled a bowl of chicken soup and placed it in front of her.

Ruan Xi gave him a smile before he raised the chicken soup to drink it sip by sip.

Once the hot chicken soup reached her stomach, it alleviated the discomfort in her stomach very quickly.

Once Zhang Qing saw that, he ordered the servants to quickly serve the dishes and withdrew in a very sensible manner.

Ruan Xi started to eat heartily, and after she had eaten her fill, her entire body reclined on the soft pillow lazily, like a cat that had eaten to her heart’s content.

Wen Ting Zhou’s gaze softened in response, and then he talked about the palace-bound Ruan san niang briefly.

“Ruan Ruan, your san jie has been confined for half a year and punished to copy scriptures by the Emperor.”

Ruan Xi revealed a surprised expression. “Doesn’t the Emperor favour her a lot?”

Wen Ting Zhou laughed involuntarily, tapping on the tip of her nose intimately.

“The Emperor is a brilliant monarch, since she has erred, it’s natural that she has to be punished.”

Ruan Xi: “……”

“Ruan Ruan, you should be aware that your san jie is no longer the person she originally was, right?” Wen Ting Zhou stated, words deep with meaning.

Ruan Xi nodded.

“Mn, her change was too huge, and she’s cognizant of so many things. I reckon Lao Taitai and Father have made the same discovery, except they are simply choosing not to say it out loud.”

“The Emperor only tolerates her as much as he does because he needs the things inside her brain.” Wen Ting Zhou hooked up his lip corners.

Whether it was the new and simple farming tools, the moveable-type printing, block and tackle, or some other invention, they were capable of drawing endless gasps of admiration.

Judging from her appearance that feared neither the heavens nor the earth, it was quite evident that she probably had better and greater things in her hands that she was still keeping to herself.

After Emperor Shengde fully grasped Ruan san niang’s personality, he did use any tough and threatening methods; instead, he grabbed onto her faults bit by bit to coax out the things in her hands.

Being confined for half a year and being punished via scripture copying was just the beginning.

Ruan Xi’s thoughts moved upon hearing that. Based on her careful analysis of the original work, Ruan san niang’s biggest contribution was ‘inventing’ cement and glass and finding the high-yielding cops. The high-yielding crops have already been found by Wen Ting Zhou, and only the cement and glass remained. Cement in particular, could be used to pave roads, build city walls, and construct dams for flood prevention, which benefited both the country and the people. Perhaps she could launch a proactive attack to make Ruan san niang take out the cement and glass early.

It was highly likely that with this huge contribution protecting her, perhaps Ruan san niang could have a lifetime of glory and splendour that had a desirable finish, as long as she refrained from continuously courting death.

Maybe Ruan san niang’s rebirth was the compensation that the Heavens gave her for the tragic death she experienced despite her major contributions in her last life.

Likewise, it was apparent that being given too many golden fingers by Heavens was not a good thing either.

There was no free lunch under the heavens.

She had a golden finger too, and while she could not say for certain, it was possible that she had stumbled upon Zhang Liang’s Travel Journal and learned that someone had already discovered these crops a while back because Ruan san niang did not dispatch anyone to search for the high-yielding crops like in her previous lifetime.

A vague thought along those veins vaguely emerged in Ruan Xi’s heart.
