Chapter 75 : VS. The wraiths – Boiling Void (Part 2)

It was an epic battle.

The wraith had proclaimed himself a seasoned soldier, and he clearly had the advantage over Seto in terms of both close-range and long-range combat.

Not only did he send metal tubes and debris flying as he had done earlier, but he also used his ability to forcibly lift one of the gears that were operating underneath their feet and smash it against Seto, which the latter had to admit was an incredible feat.

Additionally, he also used his psychokinesis to levitate Seto’s body and slam him against the floor and walls.

However, the boy was not about to be outdone, and launched an onslaught of his own on the wraith with all the destructive power and overwhelming speed granted by the release of his magic sword power.

Predictably enough, in the face of the power of the magic sword Baal Zebul, psychokinesis was one step behind, practically forcing the wraith into an unfavourable situation.

[—You’re finished!] (Seto)

[Am I?!] (Boiling Void)

[……?!] (Seto)

And then, the end was near.

The one standing and brimming with confidence was… the wraith.

As for Seto, he was lying on the ground, his left leg torn off.

[Heh Heh Heh… Kuhahaha…! A split-second decision is enough to decide who lives and who dies. As a fellow veteran from the battlefield, you understand this logic, right?] (Boiling Void)

[Agh…! Guh…!] (Seto)

Seto got caught at the briefest of moments as he was heading toward the wraith at full speed.

The latter had sent pointed shards and gears he had been manipulating flying at Seto’s left leg.

And just as he intended, it was at the most opportune moment to press them against it and cut it off.

Looking down at Set, who was writhing in pain, the wicked spirit held up his left hand with a gloating smile.

[So, does it hurt? Would you like to be free from this pain? Sorry, but no can do. For I am no longer a proud soldier, but a wraith, a spiritual avatar of evil. Let me do you a special service, squirt. I’m now going to show you firsthand… why my name is “Boiling Void”.] (Boiling Void)

As he endured the pain, Seto looked up at the wraith and saw a distorted mass of energy converging in his palm.

He thought it was psychokinesis, but it seems to be a slightly different variant of that.

And then, the effect was immediately apparent.

Something similar to steam blew out of Seto’s body.

His blood was literally boiling.

When Seto screamed in agony from that, the wraith sounded excited.

[As one would expect from a magic swordsman, you’re tougher than any ordinary human in body and spirit! That’s right, squirt! Show me more of your despair! Being slowly tortured by reality and meeting an empty end is the one truth about humans!] (Boiling Void)

[GUAAAHHH!! AAAAAAARGH!!] (Seto)

[You can’t fight anymore!! —I’ve won!! Victory is mine!!] (Boiling Void)

The wraith was so certain of his victory he was ecstatic. But then…

A bright red glint ran from Seto’s eyes like a bolt of lightning, then his magic sword was filled with power.

[Wha-?! A magic sword release?!] (Boiling Void)

The wraith immediately stopped attacking and tried to jump back, but Seto reacted more quickly.

When the boy swung his magic sword, he destroyed the floor with a slash accompanied by a shockwave.

He repeated that slash packed with this much power several times in an instant.

As a result, the floor around them collapsed, causing them both to fall.

[A-Are you insane?!] (Boiling Void)

[NUOOOOOOHHH!!] (Seto)

The wraith tried to use his psychokinesis to levitate himself, but it appeared he had consumed an awful amount of energy from that previous battle and the torturous killing method he used on Seto, as it took him a long time to activate.

It activated a dozen seconds after the fall, then the wraith searched for Seto, surrounded by a cluster of gears in perpetual motion.

The boy was nowhere to be found.

Seeing as all the pieces of floor he had cut apart were falling into the abyss, he surmised that he must have fallen into it as well.

He was so badly injured that it was impossible for him to move the way he hoped.

[…Hmph. A last-ditch attempt, huh. That fool gave me a shock. As if I could ever fall for such a petty trick.] (Boiling Void)

He snickered and turned his face upward when suddenly…

[—Yo.] (Seto)

Seto dropped rapidly toward the wraith with both of his hands on his sword, and the tip pointed downward.

When he fell after slicing the floor to pieces, he immediately grabbed a dangling chain.

Since the wraith seemed only focused on himself, he did not think of Seto until he was in midair.

Normally, he would have simply let the wraith fall to his death, but he figured that he would not die so easily, and let himself drop to finish him off himself.

Even if his body was covered in wounds, with the help of gravity, he could gain enough force and speed to achieve that.

Predictably enough, the wraith was unable to respond to Seto’s surprise attack, and took the strike in the chest.

[GUGAAAAAAAHH!!?] (Boiling Void)

[Ugh! It hurts… Dammit, I could seriously die…!] (Seto)

As they both fell into the abyss, the wraith’s hand suddenly moved and grabbed Seto’s arm.

[YOOOOUUU BASTAAAAAAARD…! How dare you do this to meeeeee…!] (Boiling Void)

Seto, with a near expressionless face as he endured the pain, glared back at the angry wraith, who was baring his red eyes and pointed teeth at him.

[Still alive, huh. You sure are persistent.] (Seto)

[Quit your prattling… You little shit…!] (Boiling Void)

[Fine, then. Now I’m gonna pay you back for what you did to me. As thanks for making my blood boil.] (Seto)

Seto channeled his power into his magic sword.

In all honesty, Seto was close to his limit, but he mustered his strength and unleashed the power of his magic sword.

Except this time, he used it differently.

Seto did not coat himself in that energy, but forcibly transferred it into the wraith.

Those who were not magic swordsmen were incapable of handling that energy.

If one of those people had it forcibly transferred to them, or even forcibly injected into their own body, then…

The wraith’s body began to glow intensely, as if roasted by a powerful electrical discharge.

His eyes and mouth were wide open, and what felt like an infinite amount of pain ran through his entire body.

At that same time, the energy the wraith used for his psychokinesis exploded within his body.

The explosion causes a blazing fire that engulfed them both.

This was the result of the strong rejection from the body and mind of someone who did not possess an affinity for magic swords.

It could even cause an internal outburst of their own energy, such as mana, which was required to use supernatural powers.

Normally, defeating an enemy using this tactic was considered “heresy” among magic swordsmen, and above all, they avoided using it because it even put the user’s life at high risk, but Seto would use it when it was necessary.

This time, he concluded that he had to use it, and managed to defeat his spiritual foe.

The wraith, who was engulfed in flames and screaming his last breath, died miserably in an explosion, with pieces of his flesh scattering in every direction.

A black lump, which must have been his burning head, was caught between distant ever-moving gears, and crushed.

Seto’s body was also severely injured by the shock of that explosion, and had lost his lower body and left arm.

He thought he would just keep falling until he became a poor mass of flesh on the ground.

…No, it looks like my gamble was a success. When I win against a wraith, all the damage I’ve sustained in battle is healed, then I can move on to the next fight. And just as I thought… —My body is restored!] (Seto)

Seto’s eyes widened as all of his clothes and equipment, not to mention his body, were restored.

Now that he was even back to full strength, he used the unleashed power of his magic sword to further enhance his own physical abilities, and cling to a thick chain that was hanging nearby.

[Haa… Haa… I’ve done a bunch of reckless stuff on the battlefield before, but… never anything as crazy as that.] (Seto)

After deactivating his magic sword and storing it away in its dimensional pocket, Seto readjusted his breathing and moved from chain to chain, swiftly and carefully climbing his way up across all the gears and cogs.

He probed around to find a way up somehow, but he could not help but sigh when he thought that this was going to be even more painstaking than fighting.

Nonetheless, he had definitely won.

Seto’s “resolve”, which outweighed even his death, surpassed the emptiness of that wraith.

[Wait for me, Satis. Only one more left. Only one, then it’ll be over. And we’ll be reunited. Aah, I wanna see her… I wanna see her so bad. And maybe a hug would be nice.] (Seto)

Only one wraith remained.

With his will to fight burning as strong as ever in his heart, Seto climbed his way up.

After that last battle, Seto was feeling a slight sense of accomplishment.

Though if this has been any regular battle, he would have thought nothing of it.

The end of the trial was near.

Which also meant that his long-awaited reunion with Satis and the chance to be friends with Jake and co. were just as near.

On the inside, Seto could not wait.

After returning from the abyss and resting a little, a metal door slowly creaked open.

Bravely aware that the next fight would be the last one, Seto moved forward.
