The Starting Of Their First Game

Translated by Darkapta

Inside the Room Alone with Leo Reche

The 17th floor of the Ruin branch of the Mystic Court Institution.

…… As expected,

Fei could not help but chuckle witnessing the playful nature of this former Goddess. He came to understand that this Goddess seriously loves to play Games.

That said. He didn’t expect even in his wild thoughts that as soon as they would meet, he would be forced to engage in a battle with Games.

“Oh right, I should mention my name before that; Well, according to this Mystic Court, I am being called as ‘Leo Reche’” (Reche)

The name ‘Leo Reche’ was a bit unfamiliar to Fei.

Is it a name which was common in the time when the Ancient Magical Civilization flourished? It doesn’t sound common in today’s world in any way.

“So, should I also call you Leo-Reche sama from now then? (Fei)

“Yes, you can” (Reche)

“Understood” (Fei)

Fei had a strained smile on his face.

…… Damn that Miranda…

…… Even though I came back at last hoping to again challenge Gods in Game Battles, and here she trapped and pushed into some tedious mess.

The job that Fei was put into was actually – to watch the activities of this God who came down on Earth, found to have a human form.

All the details, the accepting of the job, the requesting of the job, the mentioning of the job happened so fast and bluntly that it was actually quite hard for Fei to reply ‘No’. Even more if it is now.

“Ah, but Leo Reche sama” (Fei)

“What happened?” (Reche)

“Actually, although even I love to play games, wouldn’t it be better if we start playing after knowing each other a little better?” (Fei)

(Head Manager) Miranda requested me to keep an eye on this girl.

Therefore, before starting our game battle, first things first;

Gather information.

Since, if one doesn’t even know the identity of whom they are about to investigate; here this former Goddess, there’s absolutely no point in monitoring them.

“I’ll accept the game. but prior engaging in that game, since I am also your instructor, wouldn’t it be for the best if I could comprehend you a bit better?.” (Fei)

The former goddess took out a bunch of cards and said the following.

“We will, we are going to introduce ourselves through this game~” (Reche)

In front of Fei, Eighty cards were put forward.

The Eighty cards had handwritten letters on them. This cards are eventually arranged in a face-to-face format on top of the table so that the contents can be read and understood before starting the game.

“Hmm?” (Fei)

“Name, age, hometown, gender, hobbies ……. (what are these for?)” (Fei)

“I made this game since I was bored, well to waste time. I call it ‘Self-Introductory Memory Flip Card Game’”. (Reche)

“…… Well, isn’t that quite a straightforward name…” (Fei)

Well, it’s probably another form of card game, based on memorizing the positions of the said cards.

“You turn over any two cards that are facing down, if they are a pair, you receive those cards. It’s a memorization game where you have to memorize the numbers and places of the faced-down cards.” (Reche)

“Ah!, I get it”. (Fei)

“When getting the numbers by which these pairs are ought to be made, the opponent would have to give their respective self-introduction. Correct?”. (Fei)

“Yes. It’s the same rule as the memorization games but a little different. For example, if I make a pair of “hometown,” you answer where you are from. But, if I don’t get a pair, you will not answer.” (Reche)

“Understood” (Fei)

“But, you will have to answer to the matched card pairs honestly. Promise?” (Reche)

“No worries, I will” (Fei)

I will not lie.

This game would be impossible without such an obvious condition. But for Fei, as a watcher, it might be the best condition he could  ever ask for.

The Goddess herself said that she will not lie, so any type of introductory question is acceptable. [TL note: Oh My Goodness Gracious]

“Okay~, well, since you have seen the questions written on these cards for introduction, lets now turn them over, mix them up, put them in a row, and—” (Reche)

“Ah wait a bit–” (Fei)

“Hmm?” (Reche)

“The mixing of those cards~, I would rather request for the cards to be shuffled up. Thank you~” (Fei)

As he tells, Fei gathers up the cards that have been flipped over and distributed on the table. In a way that even he won’t be able to find out, he reshuffled those cards and started to distribute it again on the table faced down.

“You laid them faced up on the table to teach me the rules and the questions that are on these cards right?.” (Fei)

“Yes. But I turned it over and mixed it up. wait…… No way. ……” (Reche)

Her eyes widened up and looked towards him.

“In that span of time, I memorized all of the card arrangements. I even traced back the correct position of the cards that were to be put down on the table after mixed up by you.” (Fei) [TL note: anyone seen No game no Life?]

“It became a habit. A long time ago, a certain person trained me to these games till the extent of death itself. As a result of which, I became able to memorizing the positions of 10 sets of trump cards (approximately 540 cards) for over 7 times daily. It became my daily routine to play them seven times in succession.” (Fei)

“…………” (Leo Reche)

The former God’s mouth went agape in astonishment. [TL note: No wonders, even I would]

It seems that, even Gods have similar expressions like that of surprise as that of a human being.

Then~

The Goddess voiced aloud her delight, even all over her face,

“So~ Wonderful~” (Reche)

“You’re incredible! I like this! To see a human who are in love with Games to this very end, I just love them. Best of all, that attitude you showed, is just the Best!” (Reche)

The Dragon God, Leo Roche, understood.

The reason behind the proposal made by Fei.

Fei would never use a cheat like memorizing the cards and its place in a game battle which actually depends on the players to memorize the location and form of cards.

Fei would rather want an honest battle with these Gods. A straightforward match despite what type of match it might be.

“I like your fearless attitude towards a Goddess such as me. But well, …… then this game might be not so well suited to be played on top of such a small and narrow table right~.” (Reche)

……

“Eh?” (Fei)

“If not on a table, then, on this tatami-floor?!” (Fei)

Not long after Fei started wondering what she might decide to do; this Dragon God, this girl snapped her fingers. And~

“Now Float! Start Spinning and Randomize!”

The group of eighty cards started to float.

Those flipped cards, enveloped in a pale red glow, began to rotate above the heads of Fei and the Goddess, like a spinning roulette moving in random patterns.

Telekinetic, Psychokinesis – Both are the divine powers of Gods.

The rotating and revolving cards kept moving on air, never staying in the same place for even a second.

Moreover,

“Wha!?, the trajectory and speed of the aerial rotation are all unique to each other!?” (Fei)

“Oh, aren’t you quick on noticing!?. Good. Good. fufufu~” (Reche)

The girl, who used to be a Goddess, voiced her delight.

“It’s a good thing you noticed. Truth be told, even I don’t know how they will turn. But don’t you agree, it will be more fun this way~. This idea just now dawned upon me though~.” (Reche)

“Now I see. So in other words…” (Fei)

Three-Dimensional Memory Flip Card Game

For a normal memory flip card game, once Fei knows the location of a card, he would never forget it.

Perhaps same goes for Leo Reche too.

So, if there is an additional rule like continuously change the arrangement of the card, it might be quite impossible for a normal person to even try to remember.

Such an idea dawned upon Leo Reche. [TL note: OMG]

As the rule enacted with accordance to this game. In every second, one or the other card crosses over the air and goes to another location.

“So, in addition to the placement, you now have to memorize the entire trajectory that the card takes as it changes its location hmm?.” (Fei)

“Right~ Right~. So~,”

“are you up for it?” (Reche)

“You bet I am~.” (Fei)

“Okay then~. Ah! just one last condition. I would like to add an original rule to this game. A unique one since we are at it. Just this  for game only. You don’t mind do you?” (Reche)

umm…

“…… By the way, what kind of unique rule are you planning on adding?” (Fei)

“An absolute one-turn system.”

(Reche)

[TL note: So as to say, even if you get the card correct, you will not get another turn to guess, the next turn will be the opponents. Same to when no correct card is pulled. Or so I think.]

As she professed

Reche took out a regular bundle of trump cards. From there, she pulled out two pieces of the same card.

[5 and 5].

In other words, she had in her hand a pair of the cards having same numbers. She showed them to Fei.

“There is a rule that allows a party to get another turn when they are able to bring out the same card in this game right?” (Reche)

“Well, …… it’s probably one of the mainstream rules.” (Fei)

“Well, That will now be a no for this game then~.” (Reche)

Even if you hit a pair or miss a pair, you will only get a single turn.

Just that.

It was actually quite surprising for a God, even if a former one to add or even want to add a new rule, an ‘original one’ at that to an existing game.

Well, it might not make much of a difference in any case for Fei though. But-

OH MAN… NOW THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY BE NOT THAT GOOD!!!

contrastingly, Fei’s inner heart was in fact screaming at the top of its voice on hearing this rule.

As he calmed, and contemplated on what he understood~,

…… I see.

…… Actually, in regard to this game, this additional rule might actually be pretty troublesome to handle!

……

Fei’s heart started racing. The tension, the elation, the fear – a feeling that he had forgotten long ago – gradually starts returning back to him.

He could not help it. He was unable to contain that excitement as his body temperature too gradually starts to rise.

“Is that okay with you?” (Reche)

“Bring it on!” (Fei)

To that smiling girl, Fei responded with a bold affirmation.

Now Fei understood, This in no longer a Memory Flip card game it is no longer what the name describes it to be.

From the moment the “absolute one turn system” was added, the game transformed into a completely different type altogether.

…… This is no longer a memorization game.

…… This has now become a game of information exchange and sorting where you are asked to make a choice at each turn.

These Eighty cards.

Now, none of them are equivalent to the other.

The Dragon Goddess, Leo Reche clapped her hands in excitement.

and said ~

“All right~. Then Let’s Get Started~.”
