Sohee’s Choice (2)

“Mary, this is a gift.”

“What?”

Sohee fastened a brilliant pearl necklace around Mary’s neck.  At first glance, one could tell that the piece of jewelry was too precious. Mary’s eyes went around at that. Next, she inserted an enormous diamond ring into her maid’s slender finger.

“This ring will belong to the reporter. It’s a reward, so please exchange it with money and deliver it to him.”

“Yes, My Lady. Just leave it to me.”

It was a highly motivated response.

Mary’s face was brighter than before and So-hee was convinced that her choice wasn’t wrong this time.

Sohee kept in mind that the reporter might not be one of her network of contacts entirely.

After putting the newspaper back on the table, she took out a piece of paper that had been covered on it and a quill before returning.

So-hee’s arm movements filling the paper continued without hesitation and it wasn’t until a long time later that the sound stopped. The letter’s content was written as vague as possible. Even if the reporter unfolded it, he cannot infer accurate information.

“Can you deliver this letter to the journalist through your brother? All he has to do is to give this to Duke Deon Filtmore when he goes to Ordin.”

“Yes. I don’t think it’ll be difficult.”

For months, Deon’s daily life was jaded just the same.

The bodies’ graves, which were rather shocking when they arrived in Ordin, were now just one of the tedious tasks that he had to deal with.

His life now consisted of removing corpses in the city due to the plague and burying them at night, receiving reports of how many other casualties were reported, and deploying medical staff. Fortunately, the number of infected people gradually decreased as winter came. In addition, there were many attempts of invasion due to the region’s geographical nature but the weather prevented him from pulling out his sword a few times. While rummaging through the remaining documents in his small office, Deon smirked at his appearance. He had never been so passionate about work ever since he inherited the title. Although he was a duke, it was his job to give rights to businesses to the people below him and enjoy entertainment all day long but now he had invested his time in Ordin day in and day out. It was an obsession close to madness that he felt it.

‘Make this place normal and return quickly.’

This goal made Deon run forward like a racehorse.

In the end, good news came in from months of intense enthusiasm.

“A total of eighty people were reported———”

For the first time, the number of infected people was below 100.

Finally, the victory flag was planted in Deon’s crazy obsession and his escape wasn’t far off.

The man who just reported put an envelope of letters on the desk where Deon was seated.

“A reporter from Latvea asked me to deliver this letter today.”

“Who’s this again?”

“He also asked me to ask you if he can interview you tomorrow lunch.”

“Does he think this place is a playground? What interview? Tell him to go away.”

Deon swore and roughly tore the letter open. The paper held in his large, calloused hand was crumpled without mercy and became tattered. When he read the first line with an insincere glance, his eyes widened in shock. His eyes lit up in an instant that he even poked his nose into her stationery and read it down.

[Hi, Deon. How are you? I don’t know if you still remember what you told me when I visited you at the tower, but I think I can answer you now. All right, this is my answer. I need your help to make that happen. I’m not feeling well right now, so I hope it’s done sooner rather than later. I will wait.

Saturday, March 6th at 1:00 PM, in front of the Imperial City Gates]

He straightened out the crumpled letter in his hands, repeatedly reading from start to end over and over again. He knew who the sender was from the contents of the letter alone. There was no way he couldn’t recognize this lovely handwriting. Every moment with her was as vivid as if it had been engraved in his mind, so he immediately understood the assignment. He could throw away the dukedom, the businesses he was involved in, and his followers———

“Go away with me, Ariad.”

Ariad’s choice was finally Deon.

A big yet nervous smile spread across his lips.

For a while, he suffered a sense of inferiority to Joshua, which had built up since his childhood, and it intensified due to Ariad’s presence. The woman he knew wouldn’t stay with a man just because she was forced to. It was clear that she made a choice to stay with Joshua all this time. The realization was hard to admit.

‘Ari, you can use me. Please just don’t throw me away.’

He seemed to have accepted her choice from the moment he uttered things like this but something surprising happened.

He gave up everything and tried to find the next best solution, but unexpected results were now in his grasp.

It didn’t really matter why she made that decision.

He just wanted to focus on the fact that he was finally chosen.

Deon, who was fidgeting with the paper without realizing it, looked up.

It was really time to get out of here.

“Tell him I’ll do the interview.”

Instead of uttering curses as usual, a generous tone popped out of his mouth.

It wasn’t hard for the lovely messenger to follow his command.
