Chapter 3: Mother

Her tragic fate and everything started at the time when she was born.

The beginning of the story might seem very simple, but in reality, it was actually very bloody. Two women in the same hospital gave birth to a child, but in the end, they were exchanged by mistake. Twelve years later, the Xu family recovered their real daughter.

The real eldest lady returned home, and she, the fake, returned to her real parents and unwillingly recovered her real identity.

There were no foreign cars, no bungalows, or those beautiful skirts. She didn’t even have a father. There was only one mother and she was also very poor.

Liu Liang held the cup again and drank the water in the cup bit by bit. The water had the smell of the iron pot in which was boiled and it had a special taste. It was salty and weird, but she liked this cup of water the best and to her even sweet spring water paled in comparison.

The water moisturized her throat, her voice, and her life.

She could hear the jingle of the old-fashioned 90’s clock, the people outside talking and walking and she could also smell the aroma of food from the neighbour’s house.

At this time, the door opened from the outside, and then a woman walked in. She was in her thirties and she was very thin, with her hair tied around her head in a casual bun.

When she turned her head, she was dumbfounded for a few seconds to see Liu Liang sitting at the table and then she laughed. There was some kindness in her smile.

“Liang Liang, are you hungry? Mom will cook for you. Today, mom bought meat and will make dumplings for you, okay?”

Liu Liang blinked, and the corners of her eyes were a little wet. She blinked the tears away as she stood up holding a cup in her hand.

She filled the cup with more water and then placed the cup in front of the woman.

The woman looked at the cup in Liu Liang’s hand. She didn’t know where to put her hand. She instinctively wiped her hands again and again on her clothes.

“Is this for me?”

Liu Liang nodded.

The woman then took it and put the cup to her mouth. She hesitated at first, but she still raised the cup and started drinking.

When the warm water touched her lips, she felt that the water’s temperature was suitable, and there was no strange smell.

Her nose was a little sore, and her eyes also unknowingly became red.

The water didn’t burn her mouth and even if it did she wouldn’t put any blame on her daughter. She knew that the child blamed her. If it could make her daughter feel better, she would do anything.

She was an incompetent mother who can’t give her daughter a luxurious life like the Xu family. So as long as her daughter felt fetter, she could bear anything.

Zhou Lanping put down the cup and then smiled at her daughter. No matter how tired or wronged she was outside, she always gave her daughter this smile at home. Even when she died, she smiles.

“Mom will make dumplings for you.” After she finished speaking, she took the meat on the table and went to the kitchen.

When she arrived in the small kitchen, she washed the meat in the water, then soaked the noodles, rolled the dumpling skins, and mixed the dumpling fillings. Then one by one she cut out dumplings that were as long as ingots.

When she turned her head suddenly, she saw Liu Liang standing at the door, staring at her unblinkingly.

“It’ll be over in a while.”

She smiled at her daughter again, and her hands moved faster so that she could finish cooking sooner.

But Liu Liang had always been standing there and kept on looking at her as if she hadn’t seen her for a long time. She seemed to be reminiscing, and in her eyes, there was happiness, gratefulness, and many more complicated emotions that Zhou Lanping didn’t understand.

She wondered how could a twelve-year-old child have so many thoughts and complexity, but she didn’t see the vicissitudes of life in the cold world which was hidden under those eyes.

Zhou Lanping served a large bowl of dumplings and placed them in front of Liu Liang.

“Eat, there is still more in the pot.”

Liu Liang lowered her head and looked at the fat dumplings in the bowl, as well as the coriander leaves floating on them. As the special aroma floated out, she swallowed her saliva. She hadn’t eaten these delicious dumplings in a long time.

She couldn’t help it and picked up the chopsticks to hold a dumpling. She couldn’t wait to take a bite. As a result, when she took a bite, it directly burned her mouth. But she still couldn’t bear to spit it out, even if it burned her mouth. She endured it and ate it.

When she took the second bite, she had already learned the lesson and knew that she had to blow and then eat.

She blew the dumplings for a little while and when it cooled down a bit, she took a bite into her mouth with her cheeks bulged.

She raised her face and she still had dumplings in her mouth that she hadn’t swallowed.

Zhou Lanping stared at her daughter like this and she smiled like the summer sun, it was very warm. No matter how good other children were, they weren’t her own children.

In her eyes, her child, even if everything was bad, she would feel that her child was good. She only had this one daughter in the world and it was her fault that she couldn’t give her a good life.

Liu Liang picked up the bowl and placed it in front of Zhou Lanping.

“Do you want to eat?”

Zhou Lanping suddenly covered her mouth. She turned her face away and wiped away tears with her sleeves.

“There are still some in the pot. You eat these yourself and mom will go and take some from there. “

She always forgets to serve herself a portion. She always sat there, fearing that her daughter might not be used to her own dumplings. After all, she grew up in a well-known rich family, and naturally, the food there must have been much better than hers.

Every time, the child reluctantly eats. Even if she cooked carefully, in the end, she would either dump the bowl or dumped the food. She was still worried just now. What would she do if the child broke the bowl? Should she go to the restaurant and buy her some vegetables back?

It’s just that her daughter always ate in the school cafeteria, and for that, her salary was really not enough. She would have to wait for a while until next months’ salary came, but it didn’t matter. Even if she eats less in the future, and she would be able to survive. (Lanping wants to eat less so that her daughter can have money to eat at the cafeteria… )

Fortunately, this time, the child had eaten it. Zhou Lanping brought out her own dumplings. She only had a few in her bowl. She would eat less, and the rest of the dumplings could be dealt with in the evening.

But, why does she feel that today’s dumplings were so delicious?

At this time, Liu Liang finished her last dumpling. She was accustomed to picking up the bowl, but another hand beat her to it.

“I’ll do it.”

Zhou Lanping was holding the bowl as if she was afraid that Liu Liang would break the bowl.

Liu Liang’s fingertips paused slightly, and then she put her hand back. In fact, she wanted to say that she wouldn’t break the bowl anymore and that she grew up and changed.

But it seemed that Zhou Lanping didn’t think so.

And why did Liu Liang herself didn’t think about changing her mindset?

Abnormality was a monster and she didn’t want to be regarded as a monster.
