Since Ye Huaiyang and Pei Yuanshu escaped in a panic, they couldn’t discern the direction they were going and were looking for a slightly better path towards the foot of the mountain. Who knew that seven or eight turns and many detours after, it was more time-consuming than going up the mountain. They were both anxious, as well as worried and could even be described as full of torment yet they have to push themselves in guarding against possible enemies.

“Yuanshu, is Chang Xin the one who Wangye mentioned from Lingnan?”

The tips of Pei Yuanshu’s eyebrows rose slightly, as if surprised at Ye Huaiyang’s ignorance but he still replied truthfully, “Yes.”

“Where is she now? How many troops are there?”

It seemed that Wangye didn’t even tell her the whole plan….

Pei Yuanshu felt strange but he concealed it calmly as he swept the boughs that were blocking the way and narrated to her, “She brought 2,000 troops and is currently camped just outside of Jinguan City. From there it will take about a lighted joss stick* to ride over.”

Ye Huaiyang pondered for a moment and said, “Then let us split our ways. You head to the camp and I’ll go to Jinguan City. Find Chang Xin and immediately let her lead the troops up the mountain. If I didn’t join you yet after getting out of trouble, don’t wait for me. Just leave Jingzhou immediately. I have my own way to get out of this.”

Practically without a thought, Pei Yuanshu objected after hearing this, “No! Wangye will never agree to leave you here alone and I will not be able to explain to Huailing in case something happens!”

He knew very well that under such circumstances, the officials in Jinguan City would enforce tight security while the road from here may possibly be casted with escape-proof nets. Ye Huaiyang doesn’t know martial arts nor did she bring any guards; hence, it’s very dangerous to act alone. To urge him this way now, she most likely prepared to get caught and be thrown behind the prison bars, thus he must stop her!

Ye Huaiyang didn’t argue with him, merely glanced at him with a shallow smile as she teased, “You do not need to explain anything to Ling’er anyway…”

“I–” Pei Yuanshu choked then blurted out with gritted teeth, “I like Huailing! Will this do?”

Ye Huaiyang smiled again, her phoenix eyes overflowed with scattered radiance, “It’s said, true sentiments are seen during adversity. I wonder when we’ll hear your sincere words if we are not in danger. In any case, if you have taken half the lead like today Ling’er will unlikely stamp her foot in chagrin.”

Ye Huailing’s image suddenly flashed through Pei Yuanshu’s mind, the petulant or silly annoyance was as distinct as yesterday, which was hard to part with. After a while, he unexpectedly blushed only to find that he got distracted by Ye Huaiyang again and couldn’t help but be stifled.

“We are currently running for our lives! Why do you still have the mood to talk about these things?”

“Without diverting my attention, I’m afraid I won’t be able to control myself and go back to him.”

Ye Huaiyang’s voice was faint, yet it was exceptionally heart-rending. Pei Yuanshu was at a loss for words. After racking his mind for a long time, he finally pieced a few words of solace. Just when he was about to open his mouth, cold glints suddenly flashed in the corner of his eye. He immediately pulled Ye Huaiyang to hide under the dirt slope and raised his index finger implying that she should keep silent.

Shortly after, two saber-bearing soldiers walked down the mountain path and from their outfits, they should be soldiers of Jingzhou.

Seeing this, Ye Huaiyang frowned and gestured both her hands twice in the air. The meaning was simple and clear: ‘If we accidentally run head-on into the patrolling soldiers, I’ll distract them and you seize the opportunity to escape.’

Pei Yuanshu shook his head staunchly, indicating that he would be the one to distract the enemy while she leaves first.

Ye Huaiyang knew that once this blockhead gets obstinate no one could prevail against him, so she stopped convincing him. She merely thought if it really got to that point, she will immediately take action. By then, he will have to consider the whole situation even if he gets angry and will not foolishly allow himself to be caught with her.

If only one of them could escape, the people on the mountain would be saved.

With this thought in mind, she felt a little more at ease and breathed a sigh of relief. Quietly she poked half her head out and looked towards the trail. Seeing that the soldiers were far away, she lifted her skirt and prepared to climb up when unexpectedly the earth loosened beneath her feet. She lost her grip and instantly slid down the slope! Pei Yuanshu was too shocked that he reflexively pounced forward at once where he pulled the tree vine with his left hand while his right hand grabbed hers, which meagerly stopped her decline. However, suspending on the tree vine in this dangling position is a very perilous situation.

Sweat rapidly permeated their clothes.

Once the tree vine ceased swaying, Ye Huaiyang reluctantly glanced down. There is a clear mountain stream below and the water is not deep, which nevertheless would be able to buffer some of their descending momentum given the height. As long as their heads are not facing downward, they will be fine. Roughly aiming at the angle, she tilted her head up and said to Pei Yuanshu, “Loosen your grip. I’ll try jumping down.”

“That won’t work!” Eyes widened suddenly, Pei Yuanshu almost had a heart attack by her words.

“The tree vine has withered. It won’t hold both our weights.”

Ye Huaiyang analyzed with extreme calmness and even reached out her free hand to tug the vine on the edge when a clear snapping noise continued to sound like thunder to the ears while Pei Yuanshu’s face turned pale with fright.

“Why are you still breaking it for? Quick, grab my hand and climb up!”

As soon as his words faltered, the clump of tree vines creepily snapped off like Ye Huaiyang predicted. Both of them fell from mid-air, rolling up a large pile of branches and leaves into the mountain stream. Silence followed for a long while.

It hurts.

Seeing stars, Ye Huaiyang exerted all her willpower propping herself up. Her whole body was in excruciating pain as if rolled over by rocks that she almost fell apart. Pei Yuanshu, however, seemed fine. In one single move, he got up from the ground then ran over to check on her condition. When his sight moved to her calf, it stopped at once that even his breathing paused. Following his line of sight, Ye Huaiyang saw a patch of glaring redness.

“Don’t move. Let me take a look…”

With shaking hands, Pei Yuanshu lifted the corner of her skirt and merely saw an extremely long tear on the white silk pants while the calf beneath was oozing blood. The wound was three inches long and the flesh almost torn open with an extremely startling appearance.

With such a serious injury, she didn’t even utter half a sound that frightened him even more.

“I’ll try to stop the bleeding, just cry out if it hurts.”

Dipping the handkerchief with some water, Pei Yuanshu first cleaned the blood around the wound. He then tore off his plain undershirt to bind it around her calf. Just as he was drenched with profuse sweating, he heard her whisper, “Add a little more force, this won’t do.”

He raised his head, a delicate snow-white face came into view. She was obviously dripping with sweat yet she didn’t show the slightest hint of pain. Those phoenix eyes even revealed an incomparable radiance of tenacity, which gradually stabilized his quivering heart.

“Yuanshu.”

Ye Huaiyang called out softly again. Pei Yuanshu regained his senses and ruthlessly tightened the silk fabric when beads of blood immediately seeped out from the seams. Her throat grunted out a muffled groan as she lost control and tilted to the side. He quickly tied the knot then stretched out his arms to hold her, only to find her clothes completely wet under his touch.

“Don’t be afraid. I’ll take you to find a doctor at once.”

At this critical moment, Pei Yuanshu threw all the ethical codes to the back of his mind and stretched out his hands to carry Ye Huaiyang but was stopped by Ye Huaiyang’s raised hand as she spit out a few words in a low voice, “Don’t worry about me, you have to get down the mountain quickly.”

“No! I can’t leave you here alone!”

How could he leave her behind when enemies filled this barren mountain and how can she even handle the arrival of a wild beast?

“It’s just a small wound and not a hindrance.” Taking a few more breaths, her slender clutch on him gradually weakened, “Yuanshu, listen to me. Right now we only have a chance of survival if you get out, do you understand?”

“But–”

“No but, just go!”

Ye Huaiyang pushed him away with all her strength. He stumbled a few steps and halted again. The struggle in his heart suddenly surged up to its peak. Staring at her for a moment, he finally made a difficult decision.

“You stay here and wait for me. I’ll be back soon.”

After saying that, Pei Yuanshu carried her to the cave by the side and pulled some vines from the side to cover the cave entrance, then took a profound look before leaving. His steps were extremely fast, revealing an unprecedented determination.

Speeding down the mountain and hurrying back, he never thought the day would be so hard to bear.

He was so distracted on the way that even his answers to Chang Xin’s questions about the situation were incoherent, merely because his mind was focused on Ye Huaiyang. He couldn’t imagine how he would explain his actions to Ye Huailing if something happened to her.

Only those present today would know his dilemma.

Arriving at the bottom of the mountain, he was about to charge ahead with Chang Xin when he was taken aback seeing clearly those few figures standing on the mountain path. He clambered down the horse stiffly and drew nearer for a closer look before he shouted with certainty, “Wangye!”

When Chu Jinglan saw him returning with reinforcements, his deep eyes widened slightly. But when he looked around and didn’t see the person who had been in his mind, his gaze immediately turned cold.

“She’s not with you?”

Pei Yuanshu was startled, the pent-up anxiety in his mind swiftly rose up as his trembling voice sounded out of tune, “When we came down the mountain, this lowly official and Wangfei fell into a mountain stream. She is injured…”

Chu Jinglan seized him forward like lightning before he even finished his words. Grabbing him by the lapels, he asked in a cold voice, “Where is she now?”

“Still over by the mountain stream…”

Chu Jinglan’s face changed slightly as he released his hold and charged into the mountain like an arrow released from the bowstring disappearing in a flash. Tang Qingfeng and others hurriedly chased after him yet they couldn’t even grip the corner of his robe.

The sky unnoticeably turned dark.

The shadow guards that should have evacuated two hours ago were still speeding through the mountains. Layer after layer of darkness were lifted by the torch, yet there was still no result.

Tang Qingfeng also followed Chu Jinglan’s search for several rounds. As the hour was getting late and the Jingzhou army might come around if Chu Jinglan didn’t leave, Tang Qingfeng gritted his teeth slightly and took large strides towards Chu Jinglan.

“Master, it’s not advisable to stay here anymore. Please leave first and let this subordinate stay here to find Wangfei!”

Chu Jinglan ignored him. The cloak swayed a cold arch in the air when the person took a few steps away, Tang Qingfeng followed him closely like a shadow. As he was about to persuade again, a trembling wolf howl suddenly sounded in their ears seeming not far ahead. He immediately raised the torch and scouted forward when a puddle of bright red blood stain appeared under the staggered reflection of light.

A sudden ominous premonition rose in his heart.

Broken gravel and scattered cloth pieces were on the mudbank. This should be the place where Ye Huaiyang fell. With his heartstrings tightened, Chu Jinglan followed those blood stains. When he arrived at the front of the cave, several ferocious wolves were staring at him with green eyes, ready to charge. He leaped forward and killed them one by one, then lifted the vines at the cave entrance when the situation inside suffocated him instantly.

There was another wolf lying on Ye Huaiyang’s chest.

The force in Chu Jinglan’s palm soared and with a violent wave of his sleeves, the wolf flew out like a ragged bundle, leaving a deep and dripping bloodstain on her chest that burned his eyes like flames. Stepping forward, he held her in his arms with shaking hands. Her look was disturbingly shocking.

Behind him, Tang Qingfeng promptly shouted, “Master, look at that wolf!”

Chu Jinglan turned his head rigidly and found a dagger stuck in the wolf’s body. The design looked extremely familiar. His eyes dulled slightly before they brightened in a flash.

That was the dagger that Ye Huaiyang bought at the jewelry shop!

When he lowered his head, he realized that her chest was still moving, so he imparted some internal force into her and called out with a trembling voice, “Yang’er, wake up!”

Perhaps sensing that he was beside her, the butterfly-winged like eyelashes of Ye Huaiyang quivered and her eyes opened as he wished but closed again merely seconds later as her head also slumped back heavily.

His heart and soul felt crushed, as if he had been hollowed out all at once.

“Yang’er!”
