Yanzhou border.

The dome of the sky was as dark as ink, while the moon and stars were dim. Although this huge mansion was brightly lit, the atmosphere was particularly depressing as if dark clouds were overhead and the storm from the mountains was about to come. Two people were pacing outside the courtyard as they watched basins of bloody water coming out of the bedroom. Their hearts sank uncontrollably like a punctured grass boat.

The man could no longer hold his composure anymore. He turned away and headed for the door when the woman grabbed him hastily.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to contact the people of Ye family in Yanzhou and ask them to send a letter to Guanzhong. This matter can no longer be hidden from the Elder Young Master.”

The man and woman are precisely Ci Yuan and Yue’ya. They were blocked outside the courtyard by the shadow guards since they entered this mansion. Until now, they have no idea what Ye Huaiyang’s condition is. They merely saw the medical officer as well as the maidservants entering and exiting,  with solemn brows and light gaits. Whenever the door opened or closed, there was not the least bit of sound but heart-wrenching silence.

While they, however, could only stand here and watch. If they didn’t ask Pei Yuanshu, they wouldn’t even know where their master was injured.

Yue’ya pulled his arm to prevent him from leaving and said anxiously, “Don’t act recklessly. If this matter is disclosed to the Elder Young Master, Young Miss will definitely be angry when she wakes up.”

Ci Yuan flared up, “Are we just going to continue standing here? What’s to be done if something happens to Young Miss? You saw what happened today too. Wangye had obviously laid enough armed forces to ambush and deal with King Qiyang, yet he insisted Young Miss and Lord Pei to go down the mountain to seek help. This was simply to test them out! It’s alright for Lord Pei, after all he was sent by the Emperor, but what wrong has Young Miss done? She traveled from afar to accompany and cohere Wangye through any perilous situation, yet only fell short of gouging her heart out to show him, so why should she be treated so wrongly by him?”

Yue’ya silently endured his fury, but her heart thumped when she heard certain phrases.

Darn, is there a possibility that Wangye has discovered that letter?

Since they arrived in Jingzhou, the growing affection between Wangye and Young Miss is something that everyone sees. There’s no reason why it would suddenly be like this, unless there’s something that Wangye misconstrued hence, he wanted to sound Young Miss out. The more Yue’ya thought about it, the more she felt something must have went wrong with that letter after comparing the timing and her face turned pale.

Ci Yuan acutely saw something was not right. He grasped her wrist back and asked, “Do you know something?”

“I…I…” After several hum and haw, Yue’ya eventually opted to reveal everything under his compelled stare, “Young Miss asked me to send a letter to the palace before. You know if she doesn’t do that the Empress would certainly become suspicious….”

“I know, but Wangye doesn’t.” Ci Yuan spat out coldly then looked at the tightly closed door with obscured eyes.

Inside the bedroom, the female medical officer is still treating Ye Huaiyang’s wounds.

She recalled when the person was brought here just an hour ago, several layers of the clothing on her body were saturated with blood and the dense fishy smell was suffocating. The female medical officer thought a wolf had bitten her artery and wanted to cut her clothes for inspection but who knew Chu Jinglan held her tightly without even moving as if trapped in a nightmare. It wasn’t until Tang Qingfeng called out from behind that he awakened suddenly and placed the person in his arms down with utmost care before making his way to the side.

Fortunately, there was no trace of wolf bite after the inspection and those blood must have flowed out when she stabbed the wolf’s belly with a dagger. Hearing that report, Chu Jinglan’s expression did not look any better. His Adam’s apple moved slightly before spilling out a faint hoarse voice, “Check her legs.”

Under the long shadow of the oil lamp with spattered faint halos, the soft white hands of the female medical officer flitted gently and cautiously between Ye Huaiyang’s legs. The blood-soaked white silk dropped off in circles, revealing the narrowly long and hideous wound. Chu Jinglan pursed his thin lips tightly, his five fingers rigidly creased the heavy bed curtain and those clasped fingers faintly revealed some kind of movement.

“Get me the needle.” The female medical officer quickly cleaned up the blood stains and stretched her hand out to the side before beckoning a few medical attendants over, “Hold down Wangfei’s hands and feet, don’t let her move.”

“This King will do it.”

Pushing aside the crowd of redundant people in front of him, Chu Jinglan lifted the hem of his robe and sat directly on the edge of the bed. He then gently moved Ye Huaiyang’s body into his arms and embosomed her properly. The female medical officer didn’t say much. She raised the needle and plunged it straight into Ye Huaiyang’s flesh wherein the burst of severe pain woke her sporadic consciousness and she struggled uncontrollably. Fearing she might bite herself, Chu Jinglan immediately placed his wrist into her mouth and was soon bitten until bloodied, yet his blurred expression under the shadow of the bed canopy did not seem aware of it.

“Wangye, your hand…”

The medical attendant cried out in alarm that even the female medical officer hesitated for a moment but Chu Jinglan shouted out, “Hurry up and suture Wangfei’s wounds!”

As soon as those words left his mouth, Ye Huaiyang groaned again. The corners of his eyes sank abruptly that the overflowing coldness almost pierced through everyone’s bodies. The female medical officer immediately dropped her head and continued stitching, cold sweat already trickled down her back.

There were as many as a dozen stitches.

The female medical officer was pretty agile when a knot was already tied shortly after. A wide-mouthed celadon medicine bottle which contained a thick brown ointment was then passed over by the medical attendant. Wrapping a large cotton swab, the female medical officer smoothed it evenly on Ye Huaiyang’s wound then left it dry before binding the wound with bandages.

“Wangye, the wound has been treated. You can put Wangfei down.”

Seemingly not hearing her, Chu Jinglan merely stared quietly at that pale little face and only spoke after a long time. The words were clear and cold like the condensed and dispersed mist in the air.

“How’s her injury?”

“Reporting to Wangye, Wangfei did not suffer from a fatal injury but from excessive blood loss due to prolonged delay. I’m afraid she will have to recuperate properly for a while and must not move her left leg for a short period of time.” The female medical officer replied in a deep voice.

“When will she wake up?”

“It’s hard to say…” The female medical officer hesitated then added a moment later, “but Wangfei is still young and her health is good, so she may be able to wake up after taking the medicine later.”

Chu Jinglan’s eyes shifted slightly and did not ask any more questions. With his wide sleeve raised, the female medical officer retreated on her own accord.

Outside, Tang Qingfeng had already waited for a long time. Once the female medical officer came out he knew the job inside was done; hence, he got up and walked over to the mahogany screen then whispered, “Wangye, you are also weary after a long day. Why don’t you take a rest first?”

There was a long silence until something raised and dropped. The soft pale yellow light that covered the stone bricks was disturbed when an upright body stepped on those fragmented reflections and walked out, standing tall and cold as the mountain in front of Tang Qingfeng.

“Go and get Pei Yuanshu.”

Those words were extremely light and faint but Tang Qingfeng heard stern coldness that never existed before. He did not dare to urge him any further, so he turned around and plunged into the boundless night. Pei Yuanshu was invited to the outer room moments later.

His face evidently did not look good either.

He had just witnessed Chu Jinglan carrying a bloodied Ye Huaiyang out of the dark mountain path a short while ago. Before he could even inquire about her injuries, he was forced to sit in a carriage behind with a sense of anxiety all the way to Yanzhou, lest something had happened to Ye Huaiyang.

The horses and carriages rushed all the way and finally arrived in Yanzhou an hour later. This unfamiliar mansion even comes equipped with medical officers and medicines that could provide the best treatment for Ye Huaiyang. Hence, he took a sigh of relief and stood outside the courtyard on his own accord to wait. Feeling physically and mentally exhausted, he was unable to keep his mind on other things now and merely asked one question once he walked in.

“Wangye, how’s Wangfei?”

Chu Jinglan raised his eyes slightly to look at him. The usual clear gaze was shrouded with a layer of haze. The moment he opened his mouth, his voice was unbearably sullen, “Nothing to worry about for the time being.”

Pei Yuanshu let out a long sigh of relief and said gloomily, “It’s all this lowly official’s fault. This lowly official shouldn’t have left her alone in the cave.”

“No, it’s this King’s fault.” Chu Jinglan turned his head to look out of the window. The purple bamboo lantern that swayed under the porch just flickered out a strong sense of deep regret into his eyes like this.

The content of the letter clearly only depicted some general matters which could be more perfunctory than a report. In his heart, he understood it clearly yet he simply couldn’t control the suspicion that spindled like weeds and vines. As a result, he could not help but want to probe her out. Who knew he would put her in such a dangerous situation, which bogged him with painful remorse now.

Pei Yuanshu’s heart was also in a mess. Without much thought, he could only mock himself softly, “At that time, Wangfei clearly knew she couldn’t hold up much longer yet she still coaxed this lowly official to hastily get down the mountain. As a matter of fact, she simply wanted to race against time for you. This lowly official actually believed it and just left her there. Thinking about it now, this lowly official is truly stupid.”

There was a sudden huge tremble in Chu Jinglan’s heart once he heard that. Turning around abruptly, a burst of clanking chaos was merely heard as countless porcelain jade cups were swept over to the ground. He hurriedly held the corner of the table, in this state of dilemma, his face was actually full of pain.

Even during that kind of moment, her mind was still thinking and contemplating for him!

Closing his eyes, an overwhelming sensation filled his heart with emotion that he could not distinguish.

Seeing him losing control like this Pei Yuanshu was in a state of panic, too. He didn’t know what wrong thing he said a moment ago. When he was about to open his mouth to rectify the situation, Chu Jinglan waved his hand then walked back into the inner room. His usual proud and aloof back looked exceptionally desolate at this time.

The small figure on the bed is still in the state of comatose. The petite body is trapped under the quilt and only an incomparably feeble paper-like pale face is revealed.

Standing in front of the door for a long time, Chu Jinglan then slowly took a seat on the edge of the bed while all that came to his mind was how she would look at him before she fell into the coma.

He shouldn’t have laid such a damn trap at all. The letter had made him suspicious, her injury however, had directly gouged his whole heart out.

Chu Jinglan leaned over and gathered Ye Huaiyang into his arms then whispered in a muted voice, “Yang’er, I was wrong.”

Ye Huaiyang’s eyes were tightly closed and the only response he got was the creaking sound of the wooden door. Someone had walked in and placed a medicine bowl gently on the side table by the bed which made neither light nor heavy knocking sound.

“Wangye, Wangfei’s medicine is ready.”

The visitor was a young medical attendant. Catching sight of them embracing in bed, her cheeks involuntarily blushed hotly as she pondered how deeply devoted were Wangye and Wangfei. When Chu Jinglan coldly glanced over all of a sudden, her face turned pale in fright as she quickly lowered her head and went out. Closing the door, she inadvertently glanced inside and saw Chu Jinglan picking the bowl up to take a mouthful of decoction before he directly fed it into Ye Huaiyang’s mouth. Staring in awe momentarily, she forgot to leave.

As Ye Huaiyang’s condition was not good and her teeth were tightly clenched, most of the decoction dripped to the pillow from the corners of her lips. Chu Jinglan, nevertheless, coaxed her with an unprecedented tender tone, hoping she could hear a few words and cooperate with him to swallow the decoction.

“Yang’er, be obedient and drink the medicine.”

After saying that, Chu Jinglan covered her thin lips. He kissed her lightly and pried open her teeth slightly with the tip of his tongue. Seemingly sensing the familiar breath, the crown of her pearly white somewhat opened. With great rejoicing, he immediately fed another mouthful of decoction, which flowed into her belly this time.

From behind, someone took the little peeping medical attendant away and quietly closed the door. Chu Jinglan who is usually acute with his hearing and observation, however, didn’t even notice as he stared in a trance at Ye Huaiyang who was in the crook of his arms. Every second of her slumber seems like three autumns to him.
