City M was a well-known tourist destination in the country, so the greenery was well maintained. Trees could be seen everywhere. It was said that the country’s largest wild wetland zoo had officially opened in this city two months ago, attracting lots of tourists.

It was precisely because of the abundance of greenery that when the apocalypse arrived, the plants grew so rapidly that the entire city was overrun.

As soon as they entered the city, Jin Yang slowed down the car, his mutated eagle eyes closely observing the movements outside.

His intuition told him that this city’s situation was not as simple as it appeared.

Yin Yiliu sat on the dashboard, as usual, staring out the windshield in awe at the thick forest outside. Why did these trees grow so tall? It was as if they had been injected with growth hormones.

Just as she gently swayed her feet to the rhythm of the moving car, a huge black shadow suddenly swooped towards their car, its wings slammed on the windshield like a fan. She could only see a long and sharp-looking hook-shaped beak shrieking and a pair of claws scratching at the windshield in front of her.

Fortunately, the glass of the SUV had long been replaced with bulletproof glass, so the attack only left a very shallow scratch on it.

The sudden appearance of the giant bird startled Yin Yilu, and she struggled to sit upright.

She sat up and cursed in her head: That crazy mutated bird almost scared me to death!

She looked through the windshield and saw the culprit circling around a few times above the car. After realising that it could not penetrate through this strange copper-skinned thing, it plunged back into the trees.

The Zhao siblings were also taken aback. Zhao Sihui knitted her brows and looked outside. She had made her hair to resemble the spikes of a hedgehog, but her eyesight had not improved by much.

For some reason, since entering City M, she had always felt that there was a thin layer of mist surrounding her. She could only see within five metres of her surroundings which made her feel uneasy.

“Big Bro Jin, be careful. I think something isn’t right.”

Although the surroundings were quiet, they had the feeling that there were creatures hidden behind the trees, relying on the thick foliage to conceal their bodies while waiting for an opportunity to attack.

Zhao Qiyang suddenly remembered the news he had seen previously and said, “I heard that a zoo opened here a few days ago. Many rare animals have been transported to the city. If the people in City M ran away in the chaos, will the animals also break through the zoo and run free outside…”

His voice gradually faded, because this was a very likely scenario. He glanced at his sister beside him, and her face darkened as well.

“Sit tight,” Jin Yang said quietly and as he sped up. He did not plan on staying in City M for much longer. They needed to leave the city as soon as possible.

The road signs were mostly obscured by the trees, but Jin Yang managed to find the entrance ramp of their next highway. The car came to a halt at an empty traffic light, and the few of them stared at the scene in front of them in silence.

The viaduct was completely knocked down by something unknown. The rubble that fell from the highway scattered around the ground. It was impossible to use this route anymore.

And this place was not the only place that collapsed. Another part of the highway within sight had also collapsed.

Their plan to quickly reach City Z through the elevated highway failed.

Yin Yiliu had no idea what could be so strong that it could completely knock out the foot of the highway. She looked at the frowning Jin Yang behind her, bounced onto his lap, and patted his knee with her little paw, beckoning for him not to worry.

“Let’s spend a night in the car and discuss our route tomorrow morning,”Jin Yang said, squeezing the rabbit’s little paw.

Jin Yang took out biscuits, water and vacuum-sealed sausages from his backpack and handed them to the siblings behind him.

The food the Zhao siblings had received from the military were mostly bread and instant noodles, which appeared cheap in comparison to the food from Yin Yiliu’s space.

Jin Yang didn’t mind. He simply took the bread from Zhao Sihui, unwrapped it and started eating.

Since they had decided to support each other along the way, there was no need to fuss over food and supplies. So far, the Zhao siblings seemed like decent people.

Zhao Qiyang put on a show of holding his heart like Xi Zi1 with an exaggerated expression on his face, “Bro Jin, you are so kind!”

“You don’t stop fooling around even when you’re eating, do you?” asked Zhao Sihui while patting his head.

She was touched. In today’s world, one bite of food could sometimes be worth the price of a life. Jin Yang’s generosity in giving them food and water strengthened her resolve to follow him.

Although he probably did not need them.

The fog gradually thickened under the night sky. Jin Yang’s eyes stared through the window to analyse the situation outside.

When his eyes were in their mutated form, they appeared mysterious like the eyes of an ancient Greek spirit. The surface of his eyeballs were covered with patterned textures. There was a thin golden pupil in each of his eyes, which would dilate and constrict slightly depending on what he was looking at.

None of the three people here minded about the fog, only the little rabbit Yin Yiliu understood.

She felt anxious as she looked at the dense fog outside. Jin Yang and the others fell asleep when The Fog came, but Yin Yiliu knew that the apocalypse started after the appearance of The Fog caused the animals and plants worldwide to mutate wildly.

Everyone thought that the current state was frightening enough, but Yin Yiliu, who had read the novel, knew that The Second Fog was the true beginning of the apocalypse.

After The Second Fog, the sizes of animals had increased once again, and with it their level of brutality.

What made the people’s situation even more difficult was that the plants which had been at the bottom of the food chain had also begun to mutate crazily. Oftentimes, what got people killed was previously a little weed from the roadside that no one had cared about before.

The plants appeared to have turned into predators overnight.

The duration between the appearance of the two large-scale fogs was very short, which caught everyone by surprise.

The Second Fog had caused more than half of the casualties of the people travelling north. In desperation, they abandoned most of their supplies and walked to City B on foot. Their journey took much longer, and all kinds of difficulties and obstacles were encountered along the way.

Recalling the storyline in the novel, Yin Yiliu had a feeling that The Second Fog would be happening tonight.

Despite her anxiety, as a rabbit, all she could do was chirp. No matter how smart Jin Yang was, it was impossible for him to understand what she was chirping about.
