Chapter 34.1 - Flying Dragon Base (1/4)

The group of people who had a conflict with Jin Yang’s team left first. After they dragged the dead body of the mutated cat into the base with a trailer, Jin Yang slowly carried Yin Yiliu into the base.

Calling this place a base was an overstatement. Before the apocalypse, it was a six-star hotel in City W. It encompassed a large area with numerous guest rooms and various buildings, was closed off with a solid fence, which was surrounded by green trees.

Following the arrival of the apocalypse, a group of evolved people took advantage of the chaos in the city to break into the hotel and designated it as the ‘Flying Dragon Base’, gradually gathering evolved and mutated people to expand their base.

Today, 60 to 70% of the survivors in City W had gathered here.

By the time Jin Yang and the others arrived at the entrance of the base, the so-called base leader was already waiting for them there.

The man was dressed in a camouflage uniform and appeared to be thirty-six or seven years old. Beside him was a man with a thin body and deformed face. His eyes were large and swollen, drooping heavily on his face as if they were about to explode, which was very frightening to look at.

‘Liu Meng’ was the name of the leader of Flying Dragon Base. He was previously the owner of a large breeding farm and had pretty good insight. So after the apocalypse, he seized the opportunity to occupy the hotel and set up a base with himself as the king of the land.

Wind Eye had already recorded and reported to him every move Jin Yang and his teammates had made. Since these people could get out of City M unscathed, they had to be very powerful. So after some consideration, he decided that they must not get on bad terms with them. It would be ideal if he could convince Jin Yang and his team to join them, so they could strengthen their base while also inquiring about the situation outside.

With this thought in his mind, when Jin Yang and his teammates entered the base, Liu Meng welcomed them with a sincere smile on his face. He wanted to shake hands with Jin Yang, but Zhao Qiyang stepped forward and smiled as he shook his hand.

He knew that Jin Yang would never interact with strangers. It would be extremely awkward if he didn’t intervene.

Big Bro Jin was not sociable, his sister was a woman, and the remaining two were mutated animals. Zhao Qiyang consciously took on the role of the social lizard of the team.

The entrance of the hotel base still had the blood from the mutated cat being dragged into the base. Several middle-aged men with dirty clothes and sallow faces were carrying buckets and mops, and washing away the bloodstains at the entrance.

These were the ordinary people of the base. Jin Yang raised an eyebrow as he listened to Liu Meng proudly giving them a tour of the base.

This Liu Meng was quite capable. Although the base wasn’t a proper one, some of the initiatives he had launched, such as issuing various tasks, were able to ensure order.

There were tasks with a minimal danger level, such as cleaning the base, farming, and so on. Those who came out to clean the blood were people who had been assigned to such tasks. Blood would solidify quickly and emit a rotten stench which would attract mutated insects. That was why evolved people were unwilling to do such tasks, so naturally, these tasks were the most sought after by ordinary people, in order to earn food. Even though it could barely keep them from starving to death.

Some of the more dangerous tasks included following the evolved people out to hunt, building protective fences around the periphery, and so on. The slightest carelessness could cause them to be attacked and killed by mutated animals. Such tasks were often rewarded with some meat, and if they died on the job, their families would be given half a kilogramme of meat and a bag of rice as compensation.

There were also some gray area transactions that were not convenient to discuss openly.

When they listened to Liu Meng talk about the price of an ordinary person with a smile, the Zhao siblings felt uneasy in their hearts.

During the apocalypse, a person’s life was only worth half a kilogramme of meat and a bag of rice, but Liu Meng and the people around him acted like this was just as it should be, as if it was a completely normal thing.

As they went deeper into Flying Dragon Base, they discovered that there was a more turbulent undercurrent hidden beneath the peace on the surface.

Despite the fact that the hotel covered a large area, a considerable part of it was previously entertainment venues, such as the artificial lake, golf course, and so on. There weren’t actually many hotel rooms.

Most of the capable young adults would go around earning points in exchange for food and the right to stay in the hotel rooms.

Ordinary people could only live in temporary built makeshift homes, which weren’t able to block out mosquitoes at all.

Yin Yiliu was sitting on Jin Yang’s lap as Liu Meng talked and led them around the base when she noticed a child’s head emerging from a tent on the side of the road.

The child had a dirty face and short hair. Yin Yiliu couldn’t tell if the child was a boy or girl. The child’s eyes still retained a trace of purity as they stared at Yin Yiliu curiously and eagerly. The child seemed to like her a lot.

The child had a large scab on his face that was red, swollen, and slightly protruding, as if it was a bite wound from some poisonous insect and they were sitting outside the tent and sucking on their fingers as faint ambiguous sounds could be heard from the tent, sounds that made the group frown.

Yin Yiliu didn’t dare to look again after only one glance. Her three-petaled lips were slightly trembling as she buried her face in Jin Yang’s arms.
