Although Ruan Xi believed the appearance of the rouge was an accident, she still had the necessary vigilance. Hence, she dispatched a servant to report the matter to Wen furen, while sending over the case of rouge that Ruan Zhen had brought altogether.

When Wen furen saw that exquisite rouge case, a shred of hatred emerged between the space of her brows.

“This death-causing rouge has appeared again!”

More than years ago, her legitimate, biological younger sister had suffered from metrorrhagia during her early labour, thus taking the lives of both the mother and child. Under the exertion of her entire ability to conduct a thorough investigation, she unexpectedly discovered that her younger sister had used this harmful rouge during her pregnancy.

The metrorrhagia was not an accident.

Back then, her young seven-year-old son Ting Zhou was by her younger sister’s side, so he personally witnessed the scene of metrorrhagia, and he nearly lost his life because he was met with a wetnurse’s betrayal.

Ever since that incident, Ting Zhou had recurring nightmares for two months straight, and started hating being in close proximity with women. As long as a female came close, his emotions would go out of control, even to the extent where he would hurt them. At that time, even she had no way of getting close to him despite being his mother, and it was only when he gradually grew up, that he slowly became intimate with her and Lao Furen, but his attitude towards women still remained unchanged, and he would use a gentle and cultivated mask to cover the disgust in his heart.

Even the high monks had asserted that if there were no unforeseen circumstances, her son was fated to spend his last years alone.

Wen furen was despaired in her heart; this was especially so after she had that dream. She did not dare to force her son at all, and she could only probe for the opinions he had with regards to the noble daughters around the suitable age.

When her son suddenly agreed to be engaged with Ruan Xi last year, Wen furen nearly wept from extreme joy. Even if she was dissatisfied with Ruan Xi’s identity as an illegitimate daughter, Wen furen would still agree to this marriage.

And sure enough, Ruan Xi was an exception.

She broke her son’s fate of having to spend his last years alone.

Wen furen was exceedingly satisfied with Ruan Xi, this daughter-in-law of hers.

However, she did not expect that the rouge that had disappeared for more than ten years would appear once more.

Mama Chen’s complexion was incredibly ugly. “Furen, could it be that mysterious Taoist nun?”

“It should be her, there’s no mistaking it. Dispatch someone to investigate the origins of that Taoist nun. This time, we definitely won’t allow her to run off again.” Wen furen sneered coldly.

“Yes, Furen.”

Mama Chen obeyed. At the end, she asked another question.

“Should Da Shaoye be informed of this matter?”

Wen furen went silent for a short beat before she gritted her teeth and said: “Tell him, don’t hide it!”

After Wen Ting Zhou returned, he was called to the main courtyard by Wen furen. When he was leaving, his entire person was akin to an unsheathed sharp blade, his imposing manner serrated and oppressive.

Zhang Qing did not even dare to breathe heavily.

Once they reached the large doors of Harmonious Dwelling, however, Wen Ting Zhou suddenly restrained the imposing manner he was diffusing, thus reverting back to his original, cultured elegance.

Zhang Qing spat out a light exhale.

Inside the room, Ruan Xi was drinking her chicken soup as she felt the erratic movements of the mischievous kid inside her womb.

She reckoned that this kid was anxious to come out.

After Ruan Xi finished her chicken soup, she gently caressed her belly and revealed a gentle smile.

Even though this little guy was mischievously and randomly nudging around; they weren’t moving much in reality.

The moment Wen Ting Zhou stepped in, he caught sight of the gentle smile on Ruan Ruan’s visage, which made his mood turn for the better instantaneously.

“Ruan Ruan, I’m back.

“All of you may withdraw!”

Wen Ting Zhou gestured for Su Yu, Su Zhu, and the rest of the maidservants to leave as he walked over to and sat down beside Ruan Xi in large strides.

As Su Yu cleaned up the table and was on the verge of leaving, Ruan Xi called her to a stop. “Hold on, let Mama Yang bring in a bowl of chicken soup.”

Su Yu compiled and withdrew. Shortly after, Mama Yang brought in a bowl of chicken soup.

Ruan Xi directly handed it to Wen Ting Zhou. Having noticed the hint of bruises under his eyes, she felt endlessly distressed.

“Ting Zhou, drink some chicken soup to warm your stomach.”

Recently, Wen lao-furen’s body had been terrible, and the imperial physicians said that the end of her allocated lifespan had arrived.

Ruan Xi felt slightly hurt.

Wen Ting Zhou had been running around for both household and court matters, and if it were not for him being a martial arts practitioner, she was afraid that he would have collapsed early on.

“Alright.”

Wen Ting Zhou nodded with a smile, drinking all of the chicken soup. Once the warm chicken soup entered his stomach, his entire body was cosy warm. And with Ruan Ruan’s unfaltering and constant smile, all arresting and warm, it dispersed the haze pressing down on his heart.

“Ruan Ruan, is the child still kicking you?” Wen Ting Zhou asked in a low voice after he put down the bowl and gently placed his larger hand on Ruan Xi’s swelling belly.

“Mn, he was throwing a fit for a while today, but he calmed down once you came in. He’s probably afraid that you’ll chide him.”

Ruan Xi smiled as she spoke teasingly.

Ever since the little guy in her womb tossed and turned in the middle of night, thus shocking her awake numerous times, Wen Ting Zhou could not help but ‘threaten’ the little guy with strict words.

Wen Ting Zhou raised an eyebrow, a small smile escaping the corners of his lips. This little guy…

“Ting Zhou, how is Lao Furen’s condition?” Ruan Xi asked in concern.

Wen Ting Zhou held her soft and small hand, forcing a smile. His voice, however, dropped into a gloomy tone. “Zu mu said that she will see to the birth of our child.”

It looks like she was forcibly hanging on a single breath, waiting for the child inside Ruan Ruan’s belly to come out.

Wen Ting Zhou was both happy and upset inside his heart.

He was happy that his paternal grandmother could live for a few more days but upset because his paternal grandmother could not hang on for long.

Ruan Xi’s heart lurched, the rims of her eyes reddening slightly. She also held Wen Ting Zhou warm and larger hand as she murmured lowly, “She will, Lao Furen will definitely see the birth of our child.”

“En!”

Wen Ting Zhou hummed softly in response.

The room became quiet.

    ……

Zhao yiniang’s courtyard.

The expressions of Wen Yu Wei and Zhao yiniang – the mother and daughter pair – looked less than stellar.

With gnashed teeth, Wen Yu Wei said: “Mother, that woman Ruan Xi has entrenched herself in Harmonious Dwelling in such a prudent and careful manner the entire time, and there’s hearsay that she will be giving birth in two days. What about our plans, Liu Wan Wan, that chess piece will be going to waste soon.”

As they were talking about this, Wen Yu Wei was incomparably infuriated.

Zhao yiniang’s mind was much deeper, and her knack for patience was good too. Even though everything had reached this stage, she could still keep her composure.

“It is Lao ye’s first grandson after all, and Furen’s protection is rigorous and watertight. Let alone allowing Liu shi to get close to Ruan shi, even our midwives are incapable of getting close.”

“Mother, is there really nothing else we can do?” Wen Yu Wei was not resigned.

She wanted to borrow Liu Wan Wan’s hand to get rid of Ruan Xi, while eliminating Liu shi as well; it was killing two birds with one stone.

As Zhao yiniang observed the visible frustration and impatience on her daughter’s face, she could not help but scowl. “Wei’er, how many times have I told you this, it doesn’t matter if we miscalculate for a time. So what if Ruan shi safely delivers the legitimate oldest grandchild of the Minister Wen Residence? Whether he can grow up is still in question, and we can shift our objective from Ruan shi to the child.”

Since Zhao yiniang could fight with Wen furen for so many years, and protect her son and daughter until they were fully grown, how could she possibly be a simple creature?

Unfortunately, her own pair of children did not inherit her smarts: her son was mediocre and gullible, her daughter was overly haughty and highly ambitious but without the brains to match, and whenever she did something it would always be short-sighted and rash.

This time, she even brazenly intervened in the going and staying of the two beauties that Mu taifei sent.

After Zhao yiniang heard about it, she almost died of anger.

This brainless daughter.

Once Zhao yiniang thought about the shockingly talented and utterly admirable Da Shaoye, then looked at her own son and daughter, she felt a burst of suffocation in her heart.

Wen Yu Wei was unaware of the fact that her birth mother was internally hating iron for not becoming steel. When she heard her mother’s words, her eyes brightened.

That’s true, since they could not stop Ruan shi from giving birth, they should place their sights on the child instead.

Liu shi, this chess piece, could still be used to great effect.

“Mother, I’ll ask someone to provoke Liu shi again, perhaps she can give a good showing during the Third Day Bath Ceremony.”

Wen Yu Wei stated, brows raised in delight and eyes smiling.

Zhao yiniang: “……”

    ……

Ruan Xi was unaware of the schemes of that mother and daughter pair. On the morning of the second day, not long after Wen Ting Zhou went to court, Ruan Xi went into labour.

The contractions came quickly and without mercy. In just a short moment’s work, Ruan Xi’s forehead was dripping with cold sweat.

“Mama Yang, I think I’m going to give birth soon.”

Su Yu and Su Zhu were shocked.

“Ah, Young Lady is going to give birth, what should we do?”

“What do we do?”

The pair of maidservants had never experienced such a thing; hence it was hard to avoid being slightly panicked.

On the other hand, Mama Yang had experience; she carefully examined her Shao Furen’s condition before promptly dishing out the instructions: “Su Yu, call for the midwives immediately and tell them to go to the birthing room to prepare, Su Zhu, tell someone to go to the main courtyard to inform Furen, and inform the kitchen to prepare the hot water while you’re at it.

“Su Shan, Su Hu, both of you are going to support Shao Furen to the birthing room with me.”

Mama Yang made those decisions promptly and issued the orders. As for the other matters like inviting a physician to oversee the birth, preparing the ginger pieces and ginger soup, they could talk about it after Wen furen arrived.

The birthing room had already been prepared two months ago.

Shortly after Ruan Xi was brought to the birthing room, Wen furen arrived with Mama Chen and the rest of her entourage, burning with anxiety.

Once she came over, she rushed into the birthing room and strode over to the bedside to hold Ruan Xi’s hand.

“Xiao Xi, how do you feel right now?”

Ruan Xi smiled, “Apart from the pain at the start, it’s alright right now.”

Wen furen exhaled audibly, “Xiao Xi, don’t panic. The water has yet to break, it should just be contractions. One fears that the actual child labour is still far, I’ll ask someone to carry in a bowl of ginger chicken soup later. Drink some chicken soup first, so you’ll have the strength to give birth to the child.”

Ruan Xi nodded obediently.

“Thanking popo.”

Not long after Ruan Xi drank the chicken soup, the contractions started again, and the pain surged up in turbulent waves.

“Furen, Shao Furen is going to give birth soon, the blood air in the birthing room is heavy, please go outside and wait.”

One of the midwives hurriedly said after noticing her condition.

Wen furen originally wanted to stay, but once she remembered that it did not conform with the customs, she could only withdraw outside.

“Ruan Ruan, don’t panic, I’ll be outside the door.”

Cold sweat was oozing out of Ruan Xi’s head, and she endured the intense pain as she nodded to Wen furen.

Wen furen and the Harmonious Dwelling did not deliberately hide their movements, and the entirety of Minister Wen’s residence learned of the fact that the Shao Furen was going into labour very quickly.

This news travelled outwards swiftly like it had wings.

Very quickly, Earl Chengyi Residence’s Lao Taitai and Lin shi heard of this good news.

Shortly after Wen Ting Zhou went to court, his eyelids kept jumping and he was indescribably agitated in his heart, but he could not make sense of the reason. Hence, he could only restrain it, and listen to the court ministers discuss how they should use the cement to build dams to block the floods, albeit absentmindedly.

Just as he endured until the end of court with much difficulty, Wen Ting Zhou saw Zhang Qing, who was anxiously waiting outside, the moment he exited the imperial palace.

Once Zhang Qing caught sight of his Young Master, he immediately darted forward to report.

“Shaoye, Shao Furen has gone into labour.”

Once those words were uttered, the surrounding court ministers that were in pairs or trios heard it. Among them was Earl Chengyi, Minister Wen, and Duke An.

“Si niang is going to give birth?”

Earl Chengyi nearly pulled off the short beard on his face, and his visage was coloured with joy.

The surrounding influential ministers that had yet to leave started to congratulate Minister Wen and the rest in succession.

Whereas Wen Ting Zhou directly flipped onto his horse once he heard Zhang Qing’s report, urging his horse with a whip to make a wild rush to the front of the birthing room.

“Mother, how is Ruan Ruan?”

“The midwife said that Xiao Xi’s current condition is good. Ting Zhou, don’t worry, Xiao Xi is blessed with good fortune, she will definitely give birth to the child safely.” Wen furen said with a resolute expression.

Wen Ting Zhou’s heart steadied a little. He listened for the noise inside the birthing room with rapt attention, and he could faintly hear Ruan Ruan’s small gasps of pain which forcibly squeezed his heart into a ball, and his hands clenched into fists unconsciously.

His eyes were dead fixed on the birthing room doors.

As time continued to elapse, the maidservants carried out basin after basin of bloodied water…

Wen Ting Zhou’s eyes were gradually stained with a tinge of scarlet red. Before his eyes, the scene of his younger maternal aunt completely blood-stained as she lay in a pool of her own blood, painfully struggling until there was no breath left in her, not even so much a twitch, came unbidden….

On a spur of the moment, her younger aunt’s facial features unexpectedly transformed into Ruan Xi’s appearance…

“No, Ruan Ruan!”

Wen Ting Zhou violently kicked open the door to the birthing room and charged in there like he had suddenly gone mad.

It made everyone present jump in fright, and Wen furen, who was even more frightened, nearly choked on a mouthful of air that was coming up.

She was on the verge of instructing the servants to stop her errant son when there was finally movement in the birthing room.

A bright and sonorous cry travelled outwards!

“Wah…..”
