With Wen Ting Zhou kicking open the door and barging into the birthing room, everyone within said room jumped in fright.

Whereas the midwife who was holding onto the newly born infant patted the baby without showing any visible shock.

“Wah…..”

The infant suddenly cried out loudly.

His cry was sonorous and zestful, his vital energy more than sufficient.

中气 (pinyin: zhong qi) – vital energy of the cavity between the diaphragm and umbilicus, house the spleen, stomach, etc., which facilitates digestion and absorption of nutrition. In traditional Opera singing, it refers to the breath.

It was evident that he was an extremely healthy infant upon listening to his cries.

When Wen Ting Zhou, who had just barged into the birthing room, heard the infant’s loud cry, the scarlet red under his eyes receded instantaneously, and his rationality was restored.

Without even looking at the child, he darted towards the bed in a direct and swift manner, and only when he ascertained that Ruan Xi was safe and sound, did he reveal an emotional and joyous grin.

“Ruan Ruan, it’s been hard on you!”

Ruan Xi was slightly weak from just giving birth, and while she was slightly fatigued, her state of mind was quite decent. When she saw Wen Ting Zhou barging in such a terrifying fashion as he yelled loudly outside the door, and perceived the palpable concern he had for her, the rims of her eyes heated up a little.

“It wasn’t hard, this little guy knows how to cherish people, and he came out without causing much trouble.”

The midwife that was carrying the infant cleaned off the blood residue on his body in a quick and efficient manner. After wrapping him in bright red swaddling clothes, she congratulated Wen Ting Zhou with a crinkle-eyed smile.

“Congratulations Wen daren, congratulating Wen daren, Shao Furen has given birth to a little young master!”

Wen Ting Zhou looked at the infant in the midwife’s arms, unadulterated joy surging in his heart.

This was his and Ruan Ruan’s child.

“Ruan Ruan, look, this is our child, he looks really handsome, and cries sonorously; it’s clear that he’s a sturdy little fellow after hearing him.”

Ruan Xi stared at the ruddy and wrinkly little guy in the swaddling clothes, how did he manage to see the handsomeness…

Although she was inwardly amused, her entire countenance from her brows to the corners of her eyes, was spilling over with a gentle smile.

“Indeed, he really is a sturdy little fellow.”

Mama Yang and the rest did not disturb them.

While the young husband and wife were being joyous and harmonious inside the birthing room, Wen furen was waiting to see her grandson outside, and upon realising that no one was coming out of the birthing room after such a long time, she could not resist stepping in.

Once she entered, she saw her son and daughter-in-law holding a swaddle of cloth as they conversed.

Wen furen: “……”

At this moment, the other midwives in the birthing room hurriedly offered their congratulations to Wen furen. Once Wen furen learned that Ruan Xi had given birth to a chubby child, she grinned from ear to ear, unable to conceal her happiness as she generously rewarded the people involved, while simultaneously doubling this month’s wages for all the servants within the residence.

Everyone was exceedingly joyous, and their complimentary words flowed non-stop.

Full of smiles, Wen furen dismissed the people present to report the happy occasion.

The Wen Residence was suffused with a jubilant air.

The good news of Ruan Xi safely delivering Minister Wen Residence’s legitimate eldest grandson was swiftly publicised.

Everyone in the Earl Chengyi Residence were endlessly ecstatic.

Lao Taitai could not suppress her joy.

Her fourth granddaughter had given birth to the legitimate eldest grandson of the Wen Family’s second branch, which was equivalent to gaining a boy in one move; she could now sit on the position of the legitimate eldest daughter-in-law stably and stand firmly with her heels planted within the Wen Family.

Lin shi was incredibly elated as well, and she started to prepare the Third Day Bath congratulatory gifts.

Some were exultant, others were worried.

On the converse, Zhao yiniang, Wen Yu Wei, and Liu Wan Wan smashed so many porcelain pieces that it created a sprawling mess of smithereens on the ground.

Liu Wan Wan recalled the child she lost, then looked at Ruan Xi who possessed an immeasurable scenery, her emotions destabilising even further, and a faint shred of scarlet red flashed past her eyes.

When the news travelled over to the Junzhu Residence, Wen lao-furen‘s entire person glowed with health – which was very hard to come by these days – and a series of generous gifts were sent to Harmonious Dwelling like flowing water.

It attracted endless envy and jealousy from everyone else.

Gentle Fortune Palace, in a small Buddha-Worshipping Hall.

Wisps of incense smoke curled.

Ruan san niang, who was now pregnant for more than two months, was holding three sticks of thick incense as she faced the image of the Buddha and knelt down to pray.

She prayed to the Buddha to bless and protect Ruan Xi in a difficult labour.

But who would have thought that things would turn out contrary to her wishes; not long after, she received news of Ruan Xi safely delivering the child, and her entire body felt terrible.

In a fit of anger, she commanded her servants to take apart the small Buddha-Worshipping Hall, and nearly caused a miscarriage in the process as she accidentally disturbed the foetal energy. Hence, the Gentle Fortune Palace was in turmoil and the chaos of war once more.

Emperor Shengde: “……”

    ……

After giving birth to the child safely and smoothly, Ruan Xi and Wen Ting Zhou conversed for a while, and under Wen furen’s care, she drank a cup of water before closing her eyes to rest.

As her consciousness submerged, she could still hear Wen Ting Zhou’s voice murmuring her name joyously and feel someone wiping her body and changing her clothes before covering her with a blanket.

However, since Ruan Xi was too exhausted, she fell into deep sleep shortly after, and had an incredibly beautiful dream.

Once she woke up, a red bed canopy came into view. The was room was quiet, save the crackling of the candle flames and fire brazier.

This was the birthing room which had been tidied up nicely without a tint of blood lingering in the air. Wen Ting Zhou was supposed to be sleeping in the main room, but Ruan Xi saw his tall figure sleeping on the couch a short distance away.

The dim and yellow candlelight illuminated his handsome countenance.

It looks like Wen Ting Zhou had asked the servants to bring over a bed couch.

Perhaps because Wen Ting Zhou was in the room, Ruan Xi felt rather peaceful. Her lips raised slightly, and it was unknown what she was thinking, but the tips of her brows and the corners of her eyes were filled with secretive mirth.

“The life-saving grace, to devote one’s life…”

Ruan Xi mumbled those few words from her mouth. Once she thought about how Wen Ting Zhou said that the section of memory that she lost was not important while refusing to tell her what it was, Ruan Xi felt like laughing.

During the year she was twelve, Ruan Xi was brought to the Yunhua Temple for the first time to offer incense.

Just as they arrived at Yunhua Temple, and perhaps because that was the first time she went to a temple, Ruan Xi re-awakened her memories of the modern era while forgetting the accumulated memories of the years she lived in an ancient era, which made her believe that she had possessed a twelve-year-old concubine-born daughter of an Earl Residence with the same name in a dream.

Now possessing a healthy body and under the belief that she was dreaming, Ruan Xi shook off Su Yu, Su Zhu, and Mama Xu, completely letting herself loose in the Yunhua Temple.

Subsequently, she encountered a wretched-looking and heavily injured youth who was still holding onto dear life, and happily decided to be the beauty that saved the hero, half-supporting and half-dragging him into a remote and uninhabited wing-room.

As an orphan, bandaging wounds did not count for much.

Cough cough, as Ruan Xi recalled how she had torn open his black clothes and touched his abdominal muscles in such a bold and unconstrained manner, she could not help but feel guilty and red-faced.

Back then, Wen Ting Zhou had been heavily injured and afflicted with a muscle-softening drug, so he was just a defenceless and delicate juvenile.

Mn, which allowed her to ‘bully and humiliate’ him.

In truth, she didn’t only ‘bully and humiliate’ him with her roaming hands, she even let herself go completely as she recklessly took liberties with the young man.

Although there was grime on the beautiful juvenile’s visage, and the hair covering half of his face made it difficult to discern his actual countenance, Ruan Xi knew that he was a handsome little noble son at first glance. After she took liberties with him, she even jokingly said: “Young man, there is an old saying that is well said, a life-saving grace should be repaid with the devotion of life; I saved you, shouldn’t you use your body to repay me?”

“Right, I’m called Ruan Xi, twelve this year, not engaged, the Fourth Young Lady of the Earl Chengyi Residence.”

Ruan Xi could not resist covering her face when she remembered this point.

If she had known earlier that it was this kind of memory, she would rather not recall it for the rest of her life and believe that she was having a beautiful dream. She actually disclosed her family background – and elatedly too – which was basically the height of foolishness. It was no wonder why Wen Ting Zhou refused to tell her directly.

It was probably too embarrassing to mention.

Ruan Xi’s ears heated up.

She remembered that after she told him to devote his life and announced her family clan, Wen Ting Zhou had gone silent for a while before replying to her.

“My name is Wen Ting Zhou, seventeen this year, not engaged, [my] Father is the Minister of Rites.

“Once you have your hair-tying ceremony, I will ask my family to go to the Earl Residence to propose marriage.”

The edges of Ruan Xi’s mouth curled uncontrollably when she recalled that statement.

She did not expect that Wen Ting Zhou did not deceive her by concealing his identity during their first encounter.

How did she respond again back then?

“I was just joking; you don’t need to force yourself.”

“The words of a nobleman, is a promise worth a thousand gold, I will uphold the promise and marry you.”

Ruan Xi thought about Wen Ting Zhou’s serious appearance back then, and how she had thought that she was dreaming in any case, so she casually replied with a line:

“Sure, I’ll wait for you to come up to the door and propose marriage three years later.”

Now that she was reminiscing about it, Ruan Xi could not help but find it hilarious.

It turns out the predestined affinity between her and Wen Ting Zhou had been preordained early on. However, when she thought about the ending of the novel’s Wen Ting Zhou, the smiling expression on Ruan Xi’s visage disappeared in lieu of a frown.

Inside the original novel, Ruan si xiaojie had married Qi Yue An, while Wen Ting Zhou spent his last years alone, without a single woman by his side.

It was unclear if she had crossed over as a foetus during Ruan san niang’s previous lifetime, only to lose her past memories after birth, and reawaken her modern era memories after having an intersection with Wen Ting Zhou in the middle.

Wen Ting Zhou kept that promise in mind, thus remaining unmarried for all his life.

If that was really true….

Pursing her lips, Ruan Xi gazed at the handsome man slumbering away on the distant couch, a glint of distress flashing past her eyes.

The present Ruan Xi was still unaware of the psychological trauma that Wen Ting Zhou had suffered during his childhood, which led to his extreme disgust with having women in close proximity.

And she was the exception.

Ruan Xi secretly decided in her heart that she definitely had to treat Wen Ting Zhou well in this lifetime.

After making that decision, Ruan Xi closed her eyes and continued sleeping.

On the morning of the second day, Wen Ting Zhou walked up to the side of the bed after waking up from the couch to check on his sleeping little wife, his gaze warm. He helped Ruan Xi tuck in her blanket gently before quietly leaving the birthing room to wash his face and freshen up.

Owing to the happiness of gaining a precious son, Wen Ting Zhou asked Emperor Shengde for a three-day leave.

Emperor Shengde allowed it.

Therefore, Wen Ting Zhou did not have to go into the government office for the next three days.

After going through his morning routine and making himself presentable, Wen Ting Zhou gave Su Yu and Su Zhu a few lines of instruction before going to the main courtyard to see the child. Since Ruan Xi had just given birth, he did not want her to be overly exhausted, so he asked his Mother to take care of him first. He would be carrying him back to Harmonious Dwelling later, because Ruan Xi would definitely want to see their child.

Wen furen and Minister Wen had woken up very early and they were partaking in their breakfast. Perhaps because they had a legitimate eldest grandson now, their complexions were very good.

“Ting Zhou, you’re here, has Xiao Xi awoken?” Wen furen inquired with concern when she saw her son arriving.

Her son’s actions yesterday nearly gave her a terrible scare; it looks like the psychological shadow caused by her younger sister’s death during childbirth still had a deeply rooted influence on her son.

Wen furen did not dare to ponder whether her son would become ruined if an accident happened to Xiao Xi.

It was fortunate, truly fortunate that Xiao Xi had her own blessings.

The delivery was very smooth.

Xiao Xi did not suffer much hardship either.

Her chubby grandson was extremely sturdy and healthy, his cries were loud and bright, and the air in his chest was more than enough.

Most importantly, this little guy did not kick up a fuss or cry after he had his fill of milk, and would peacefully sleep without causing any disturbances.

When Wen Ting Zhou heard his Mother mention Ruan Ruan, his gaze instantaneously softened as he said smilingly, “Ruan Ruan was terribly exhausted yesterday, she’s still sleeping.”

“Then let Xiao Xi rest more.” Wen furen was utterly content about everything after having a grandchild, and it was as though her entire person had become a lot younger.

Minister Wen was the same.

This was the first grandchild of their second branch.

He was now a person with a chubby grandson as well.

“The Third Day Bath Ceremony and Full Month Ceremony must be done grandly!” Minister Wen then said.

Wen furen was full of smiles.

“I will have the servants to send out the celebratory invitations in a short while.”

Wen Ting Zhou’s mouth corners quirked up and sat at the table with his parents to partake in breakfast together.

After they were done with breakfast, the three drank some tea and conversed, and the wetnurse brought the little guy who had just drunk his milk inside.

The three stopped talking immediately. Minister Wen looked at his chubby grandson, though upon seeing that the time was getting late, he went to court with a face full of joy.

Wen Ting Zhou peered at his wide-eyed and fascinated son inside the swaddling clothes, his own eyes brimming with gentleness.

“Mother, Ruan Ruan should be awake soon, the wetnurse will be carrying the child to Harmonious Dwelling later.”

Wen furen stared at her obedient grandchild, feeling reluctant to part, as she agreed to it.

By the time Wen Ting Zhou finished having breakfast with his parents in the main courtyard, Ruan Xi was already awake.

Su Yu and Mama Yang were attending to Ruan Xi as she washed her face and rinsed her mouth to freshen up.

After making herself presentable, Mama Yu carried in a light puerperium (post-partum) meal, which was quite decent in taste.

During her postpartum month, her diet was totally controlled by Mama Yang.

This was not the first time Ruan Xi felt fortunate about the fact that she had a Mama with ample experience like Mama Yang by her side.

Shortly after she finished the puerperium meal that Mama Yang meticulously prepared, Wen Ting Zhou and the wetnurse who was carrying her child stepped in.

When Ruan Xi caught sight of Wen Ting Zhou’s handsome countenance and recalled the first encounter she had with Wen Ting Zhou at Yunhua Temple, her gaze evaded him momentarily.

Hm?

Wen Ting Zhou raised his eyebrows slightly, Ruan Ruan’s reaction was a bit off.

Why was he getting the sense that Ruan Ruan was feeling guilty?
