Chapter 34.4 - Flying Dragon Base (4/4)

The woman’s husband was an evolved person, but he died while searching for supplies. The people in the base compensated her and her children with a few kilograms of meat and some rice before chasing them out of the room designated for the family members of evolved people.

Before her husband died, he entrusted his teammates to take care of his wife and child for him, but this gang of scumbags wanted his wife to ‘take care’ of their nasty intentions instead. After hinting at her a few times to no avail, they directly said to her face that if she and her child wanted to continue to stay at the base, she had to accept her fate obediently.

The food they had received in exchange for her husband’s life was depleting as the days went by, and her child was becoming thinner and thinner. As a weak woman, she couldn’t do anything. After getting threatened by her husband’s so-called ‘buddies’ every day, she was on the verge of breaking down. In the end, she could only grit her teeth and obey them.

She had no choice but to endure the humiliation in order to survive, using her body in exchange for food, so she could continue to raise her child in the apocalypse.

However, two days ago, her Little Bao had been stung by an unknown insect. Pus had already formed that night, and the wound was big and swollen. In a panic, she disinfected a needle with fire and poked the pus, but the wound got bigger the next day.

She was afraid. She wanted her husband’s teammates to give her some points so she could exchange some medicine and disinfectant at the clinic opened by the base.

However, these people were reluctant to give her their points. They came up with all sorts of reasons to reject her request. In the end, they got impatient from her persistent pestering, so they said they would help her under a condition that was too much. But for the sake of her child, she agreed to it.

However, Little Bao started getting feverish at night. He was crying and talking nonsense, and the wound on his face continued to fester. Almost having a meltdown, she begged these people to take her child to the hospital.

The young man merely pinched his nose and frowned as he said, “He’s a goner,” and sent the child to the morgue at the base, waiting for his death.

Yin Yiliu clenched her teeth in anger when she heard about this. Women and children became the most powerless and had the least rights to decide their own fates during the apocalypse. Things were better if they were evolved people, but ordinary people had no chance.

Along the way, she had witnessed the evolution of animals and plants, as well as the degeneration of human nature. Her firm belief that the apocalypse had nothing to do with her began to waver.

Was she really unable to do anything about the apocalypse?

Was finding the way to end the apocalypse something only the main leads in the book could accomplish?

She pursed her lips, placed some medicine and food by the entrance of the tent, and walked away.

The bright moon had hung high in the night sky, and large tracts of silver sprinkled on the ground. The hotel, which had once symbolized wealth and luxury, had now become a refuge. Countless people who struggled to survive were living here, hoping for a brighter tomorrow.

Yin Yiliu followed the faint smell of blood in the air and ran in the direction of the black wolf. She moved quickly, and there was no innocence of a little girl on her face, only a solemn expression and a pair of bright eyes.

At that time, the young man had wounds all over his body from being bitten by the black wolf. One of his arms had been severed, a big hole had opened in his abdomen, and his legs were constantly trembling.

Behind him was an artificial lake. The goldfish in the lake had mutated into fish monsters, jumping in and out of the shallow waters on the shore as they smelled blood.

When the wolf heard the slowing footsteps behind him, without turning his head back, it continued to grin with its bloody mouth as it approached the man covered in blood.

The man, who had been proud and desired the black wolf in the morning, was now terrified and chagrined. He assumed the little wolf had been instructed to seek revenge for what had happened during the day. After looking at the wolf that was approaching him in front and the fish monsters in the lake behind him, he gritted his teeth and dived into the lake.

The mutated goldfish which had been waiting for a long time swarmed up to bite the man’s body. He screamed again and again as the lake water was gradually dyed red from the blood.

The blood on Yin Yiliu’s hands had dried up. She slowly walked to the black wolf’s side and watched as the movement in the lake gradually subsided and the blob of crimson dispersed.  “Let’s go.” She closed her eyes and turned around.

Her hands had been stained with blood, but she did not regret it.

If everyone in the apocalypse regarded the lives of their fellow compatriots who were ordinary people as expendable, that was when the world was truly collapsing. At this moment, she began to seriously recollect the clues about the origin and exploration of the apocalypse that were interspersed in the novel.

Long after the girl and the wolf had gone, a splash sounded from the lake as a bloodied man emerged from the water. The man with bite wounds all over his body stared resentfully in the direction where Yin Yiliu and the black wolf had gone.

He must survive! He must get Liu Meng to kill these people!

The man endured the pain all over his body and broke open the mouths of the fishes that were biting his flesh. Just as he was about to step ashore, he suddenly felt that something was wrong.

He raised his head, and his blood-stained face was met with the black barrel of a gun. Under the moonlight stood a handsome man, coldly pointing a gun at his head, but he was clearly sitting in a wheelchair during the day!

Before he could speak, a muffled sound was heard, and a hole was opened in his forehead. Red and white slurry brain juices flowed down his cheeks, and his body fell back into the lake.

This time, he could never get up again.

Small ripples appeared in the lake, which soon became calm again.

Jin Yang put away the silenced gun and let out a soft sigh.

He had never expected the little fella to be so small after she turned into a human, so small that his heart softened, and a little girl at that.

When he thought of Yin Yiliu’s bare feet and thin dress, he began to worry again. Was it really okay for such a small child to wear such thin clothes?

Jin Yang looked far away in the direction where Yin Yiliu had disappeared, and his figure was once again hidden in the darkness.

T/N: Smh Yiliu, getting Jin Yang to clean up your leftover mess~ Also, funny how the author specifically mentioned goldfish. You don’t need an apocalypse to have goldfish monsters in lakes (please don’t ever release your pet goldfish into the wild or down the toilet!)
