The next morning, Jin Yang woke up early. He looked at the fluffy white ball that was asleep beside him and scooped it into his arms.

Yin Yiliu vaguely felt like she was being surrounded by a warm scent. She scrunched up her nose, covered her face with her long ears and continued to sleep.

One of her rabbit legs was dangling around, with a soft, pink, and squishy little paw exposed. In her sleep, she felt that her paw was gently pinched and instinctively retracted her leg.

Jin Yang withdrew his gaze and slowly walked out of the basement. He had already gotten used to the needle-like pain in his legs. The trembling of his legs was almost invisible under his long pants.

Everyday, he would walk around by himself for an hour or two until the pain reached his limit. He needed healthy legs as soon as possible to survive in this dangerous world.

When they stepped outside of the basement, Yin Yiliu shook her ears and burrowed further into Jin Yang’s arms to hide from the bright sunlight.

The crazily growing grass outside stopped growing at around knee height of an adult man. It seemed like that was the maximum growth height for the wild grass.

Their edges were all jagged. When the wind blew, the jagged edges looked menacing.1

Jin Yang glanced over the grass and saw a greyish black shadow hidden inside.

He was on full alert. Grabbing the machete he had previously placed at the entrance of the basement, he held the little rabbit closer in his arms.

The shadow in the middle of the grassy field moved; it was alive. It reared upwards and showed itself in the open.

The shadow was actually a big mutated rat. Its cherry-sized eyes were like red light bulbs, its sharp incisors protruded from its lips, stained by blood.

After Ma Feiteng broke open the front gate by force, the electric fence stopped working as well. That was why the rat was able to break through the fence to follow the rotten smell coming from the grassy field.

The green snake previously killed by Yin Yiliu had rotted. Insects laid eggs in its body, and after the eggs hatched, it had become a natural breeding ground for more insects. The whole place had been sullied.

The mutated rat arrived just in time for this ‘delicacy’. After it finished eating, it had lost interest in Jin Yang, this ‘huge food’. Its eyes fell on the smaller rabbit in his arms instead.

It hissed at Jin Yang, exposing its sharp teeth, and leaped forward.

Jin Yang held his machete tighter. His legs were not yet strong enough for him to run, but he was not afraid.

These few days, he gradually noticed that besides his legs regaining sensation, his senses and strength had improved dramatically as well.

When he lay down on the dark basement floor at night, he was able to see the surroundings if he focused. But he did not know that when he focused, his eyes looked like wine coloured translucent balls, with a thin pupil in the middle of each eyeball like the eyes of a bird.

If Yin Yiliu could see this, she would have been shocked, because Jin Yang’s eyes had mutated. They became like the eyes of an eagle with night vision.

When Jin Yang stared at the mutated rat, his eyes turned from the white and black human eyes to the wine coloured ‘marbles’.

His eyes could be seen more clearly under the sunlight. There were dense textures vibrating on the surface of his eyeballs.

His thin pupils were able to perceive even the smallest movements.

The rat that kept hissing suddenly attacked. Its claws aimed at the white fur ball in Jin Yang’s arms.

At that moment, Jin Yang felt like an owl. Not only was he able to see the mutated rat clearly but he could also instinctively predict the trajectory of its movements.

He blocked its attack just in time by baring the machete against its sharp incisors.

At this distance, he could smell the rotten stench coming from the rat. The big rat, as big as the length of Jin Yang’s arm, squeaked angrily at him.

Without hesitation, Jin Yang rotated the machete and sliced off half of its face. Blood splattered everywhere, dripping from the machete onto his wrist.

The rat dropped to the ground. It glowered at Jin Yang with its remaining eye and let out a loud cry.

Yin Yiliu was awakened by the noise. She opened her eyes to Jin Yang’s broad chest, the sight of the mutated rat giving her a shock.

Bloody scenes like this had always given her the chills.

She noticed the machete in Jin Yang’s hands was stained by blood, which meant that Jin Yang was the one who had severely wounded the rat. She was amazed.

It seemed that Jin Yang was not as weak as she thought.

Indeed, if Jin Yang wasn’t strong enough, he wouldn’t be able to even survive the early stages of the apocalypse, let alone travel all the way to City B and take on the leads and their teammates by himself.

After staring at Jin Yang for a while, the rat gave up and ran away.

Yin Yiliu was astonished. The rat had had half of its head sliced off, but it was still able to run that fast?

Were all mutated animals this strong?

Jin Yang noticed the little rabbit had woken up. It was staring at him with its little eyes. He lifted his hand to stroke its head, but stopped halfway when he saw blood on his wrist.

He relaxed his tensed nerves, but the excruciating pain from his legs made him feel even more irritated.

He poked the little rabbit’s head and said, “Please give me the wheelchair.”

Yin Yiliu controlled her mind, then the wheelchair appeared with the remote control.

Jin Yang sat on the wheelchair and held Yin Yiliu towards the villa.

“It’s not safe here anymore. We need to get to City Z as soon as possible. Let’s depart today,” Jin Yang said. The little rabbit could not respond to his words, so it looked up at him and waved its ears.

After they finished packing and stored all their supplies in Yin Yiliu’s space, it was almost noon.

Jin Yang went into the SUV and placed Yin Yiliu on his lap, but the little rabbit was obviously not satisfied.

Sticking out its soft little tummy, it stepped on Jin Yang’s thighs with its wobbly little feet, grabbed on his arms and clumsily climbed upwards.

Looking at the struggling little rabbit, Jin Yang lifted its little butt and asked, “You want to sit on top?”

Yin Yiliu nodded her head. She was so small that she could not see outside if she sat in the car seat.

When she was placed on the dashboard, her view widened. The car had high ground clearance, so Yin Yiliu could see the world outside clearly through the windshield.

Before leaving, Jin Yang took one last look at the Jin family villa. The villa had become very desolate, and the trees planted in the yard had grown crazily all over.

He took a deep breath and drove away.

The Jin family half-mountain villa was located in the suburbs. To leave the city, they had to pass through the city centre. As the car slowly advanced into the city, the current state of the city came into view.

The streets and alleys were still the same, but there was no one on the street. It was eerily quiet.

The shops on both sides of the road were all in disarray. The doors were open and the goods inside the shops were scattered around. Obviously these places had been looted countless times during this period.

During the early stages of the apocalypse, people in the city were in a panic. Every day, countless people were killed by mutated animals. No one had the luxury or time to put the city back in order.

Yin Yiliu could see dried bloodstains on the walls from time to time. When the car reached the city, two huge mutated dogs suddenly sprung out from around the corner.

Before she could see clearly, a gunshot sounded, and one of the two mutated dogs was hit. The other dog instantly backed off.

Jin Yang stopped his car, and half a minute later, the dog charged again in the direction of the shooter, and another gunshot sounded in the empty street. The dog was shot with a headshot.

The shooter’s precision indicated that he was no ordinary man.

A few men walked out from the corner. They noticed Jin Yang’s car first, then only turned their gaze to the two mutated dogs on the ground.

There were five people, all men, two of whom were dressed in military uniforms and appeared to be part of the military.

The soldiers instructed the three other men behind to carry the dogs. “What a good catch! We can eat meat today.”

One of the soldiers with a gun slowly approached the SUV parked in the middle of the road.

“Where’re you from, friend?”

Yin Yi Liu turned back and glanced at Jin Yang, feeling a little nervous. They won’t rob us, will they?

Jin Yang seemed to feel her emotions and touched her soft rabbit ears. “Don’t worry. It’s okay.”

He rolled down the car window, revealing his face to the approaching man.

“From the suburbs.”

The man looked inside Jin Yang’s car and found that there was only him….and a rabbit?

The rabbit was sitting in front of the car window, looking at him with its cute little eyes and shaking its long ears. It was unlike the huge mutated animals these days that pounced at every human they see.

" "

He slowly put down the gun, wondering if there were any animals that had not mutated yet?

“I’m from the 8th Unit. You came here because you heard the news that we’re going to the north right? Don’t blame us for being vigilant. We gotta be more careful now that the world is so chaotic.”

Yin Yiliu raised her head and looked at the man. He looked quite young, around early thirties, and he was dressed in military uniform. He seemed like a good guy.

“I’m Wang Zhengjie.”

“Jin Yang.”

Hearing the name Jin Yang, Wang Zhengjie took a few more glances at him.

He remembered there was a famous young entrepreneur who had the same name. He appeared often on TV, and originated from one of the most prominent families in this city.

Jin Yang had some Caucasian-like facial features. With a cold face on, he looked like someone not to be trifled with. Wang Zhengjie knew right away that this was the same Jin Yang.

Then it was no surprise that he could afford such a good car.

While they were talking, the other men carried the two dogs over. The dogs were so large and heavy, ordinary people who had not evolved in strength would find it difficult to carry.

The three men seemed to be ordinary survivors. They were all young adults, with two of them in tattered clothes. They looked at the SUV with differing expressions.

“Shit, this car is so cool!” One of them said, while looking at the SUV admiringly.

“To be brave enough to act so high-profile with the current state of the world, this guy is either really dumb or really strong,” the older guy said.

, pretty please?
